\"bethechurch\"In November, my book [scg_html_fc] will be published by Civitas Press. It contains the stories of 36 people and how they have followed Jesus in seeking to live and function within His church. The stories fall into three categories: Leaving Church, Switching Church, and Reforming Church.<\/p>\n

Leading up to publication, I am writing several posts which give credit to the authors who made this book possible. Each post will include a short description of three authors and provide a preview summary of their chapters. Below are the descriptions and summaries of one author in the \u201cLeaving Church\u201d category and two from the \u201cSwitching Church\u201d category.<\/p>\n

Finding Church <\/em>Chapter 13 \u2013 Leaving Church in the Age of Social Media<\/h2>\n

Genevieve Thul is the author of Turquoise Gates<\/em> (TurquoiseGates.com), a blog about her battle with cancer and the faith transformation it\u2019s birthed in the past four years. She is a contributing author at Dayspring\u2019s faith blog, Incourage.me<\/a>. Genevieve is in her mid-30s and lives in rural Wisconsin with her husband and four kids. She is currently in the final stages of Ph.D. dissertation work online, and she and her family are searching for a healthy church to call home.<\/p>\n

A painful church experience is magnified in a digital age where gossip and slander can spread through social networks faster than ever before. Genevieve learned this through personal experience. In her chapter, the pain is present, but is overcome by hope and love. She concludes with several suggestions for people who find themselves attacked and slandered by church people.<\/p>\n

Finding Church <\/em>Chapter 14 \u2013 Church Change<\/h2>\n

Shannon Brisco is the Program Officer for a non-profit integral mission organization. She has her bachelor of administration from Tyndale University and her masters of arts in international development from Eastern University. She speaks Spanish and loves to travel, cook, and spend time with her family.<\/p>\n

Through a series of attending numerous churches over the span of several years, Shannon came to recognize that change in churches comes slow, but often the change we want to see in our church may actually be the change God wants to accomplish in our own life instead.<\/p>\n

Finding Church <\/em>Chapter 15 \u2013 From Factory-Farmed God to Grass-Fed Jesus<\/h2>\n

Jessica Bowman married her high-school sweetheart when she was 17 years old. Together, they are raising four children. She blogs at bohemianbowmans.com and is the author of Parenting Wild Things\u2014Embracing the Rumpus<\/a><\/em>. She loves writing, hooping, and theology.<\/p>\n

Jessica contrasts mass-produced factory food with fresh, healthy, organic food, and shows how there is a parallel to both in the ways we approach Jesus, God, and church. Now that she is feasting on the natural Jesus, she will never return to the artificial, additive-filled church from which she came.<\/p>\n

Following Jesus has led Genevieve to leave the institutional church and seek relationships with others outside the four walls of the traditional church building, while Shannon and Jessica have decided to remain within a traditional church setting, but switch from one church fellowship to another.
