We equate King Solomon with wisdom, and rightly so.\u00a0 He authored several \u201cWisdom Books\u201d of the Old Testament and was the premier sage of his day (1 Kings 4:29-34).\u00a0 But we often assume we can\u2019t replicate his wisdom today.\u00a0 In this post I\u2019ll debunk three myths about Solomon\u2019s wisdom and give some practical implications.<\/p>\n

Myth #1: Solomon got lucky when God gave the offer of a lifetime.<\/h2>\n

\"SolomonsEarly in Solomon\u2019s reign, God appeared to him and said, \u201cAsk what I shall give you\u201d (1 Kings 3:5, ESV).\u00a0 Solomon asked for wisdom instead of longevity or wealth or military supremacy, so it pleased God to give him the whole pile.<\/p>\n

But notice what was on Solomon\u2019s mind that night: \u201cYou have shown great and steadfast love to your servant David my father\u2026 And now, O LORD my God, you have made your servant king in place of David my father\u2026\u201d (I Kings 3:6-7).\u00a0 Solomon had been thinking about his dad.<\/p>\n

And what was the primary lesson David had drilled into Solomon from infancy?\u00a0 In Solomon\u2019s own words, \u201cWhen I was a son with my father\u2026 he taught me: \u2026\u2018Get wisdom; get insight\u2026 The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom, and whatever you get, get insight\u2019\u201d (Prov 4:4-7).<\/p>\n

David taught Solomon one thing: Always get wisdom.\u00a0 So he did.<\/p>\n

Implication:<\/strong> There\u2019s nothing magical about gaining wisdom. \u00a0God gives it (Prov 2:6), and he wants you to ask for it (James 1:5).\u00a0 So by all means, ask!\u00a0 But don\u2019t wait for a mystical transfusion of brain cells.\u00a0 Seek it, and teach others to do the same.<\/p>\n

Myth #2: God supernaturally zapped wisdom into Solomon\u2019s brain.<\/h2>\n

This myth surfaces particularly when we read or teach the story about the two prostitutes with one baby (1 Kings 3:16-28).\u00a0 We, like all Israel, stand in awe of the king, perceiving that the wisdom of God was in him to do justice (28).\u00a0 But this wisdom is more mundane than it is miraculous.<\/p>\n

Solomon could not read minds. \u00a0He had no crystal ball.\u00a0 He couldn\u2019t discern a person\u2019s guilt or innocence by any sort of divination or wizardry.\u00a0 What he could <\/i>do, however, was act on what he knew.<\/p>\n

Solomon already knew a few basic principles of human existence from God\u2019s Word.<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Everybody desires something<\/strong> (that\u2019s how the serpent tempted Eve in Gen 3:5-6).<\/li>\n
  2. All actions flow out of what we desire<\/strong> (that\u2019s why the Greatest Commandment in Deut 6:5 is to desire the Lord more than anything else).<\/li>\n
  3. When forced to choose, everybody will give up what they desire less to gain what they desire most<\/strong> (that\u2019s why Abram gave up a good land for peace with Lot in Gen 13:8-9, Joseph gave up vengeance for world rescue in Gen 45:4-8, and Lot\u2019s wife gave up her life for Sodom\u2019s community in Gen 19:26).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    \"SolomonsSolomon just has to expose these issues.\u00a0 Notice how he does it.<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. He starts with what\u2019s visible<\/strong>.\u00a0 In 1 Kings 3:23, he simply repeats what they\u2019ve already said.<\/li>\n
    2. He surfaces what\u2019s invisible.\u00a0<\/strong> He knows what they\u2019re saying; he just needs to learn why<\/i> they\u2019re saying it.\u00a0 What does each woman want the most?<\/li>\n
    3. He concocts a plan to expose their deepest desires<\/strong> (24-26).\u00a0 Chopping the baby in half wasn\u2019t guaranteed to reveal who the true mother was.\u00a0 But it was guaranteed to reveal which, if either, cared more about the child than herself.<\/li>\n
    4. He acts accordingly.\u00a0<\/strong> Rather than allowing fear, indecision, or even righteous anger to paralyze him, he does something.\u00a0 He gives the baby to the woman who showed a mother\u2019s concern (27).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      The wise reflect what they see, try to understand people\u2019s motivations, and act.<\/p>\n

      Implications:<\/strong> Do you want to be wise?\u00a0 Just put into practice what you already know from God\u2019s Word.<\/p>\n

      Don\u2019t look for a wise \u201czinger\u201d to impress someone in conversation.\u00a0 Just ask more questions and repeat in different words what you hear them say.\u00a0 You\u2019ll learn a lot about people, and they may even accuse you of being wise.\u00a0 Such \u201cmundane\u201d wisdom enables us to engage opponents<\/a> and our culture<\/a> winsomely.<\/p>\n

      Myth #3: Solomon\u2019s decline was fast and unpredictable.<\/h2>\n

      You may be familiar with Solomon\u2019s love for the ladies and his subsequent departure from the true faith (1 Kings 11:1-8).\u00a0 You might not realize, however, that Solomon already knew of his (and our) tendency: \u201cCease to hear instruction, my son, and you will stray from the words of knowledge\u201d (Prov 19:27).\u00a0 Solomon stopped learning, and it killed him.<\/p>\n

      Implication:<\/strong> You can replicate Solomon\u2019s wisdom, and you can replicate his folly.\u00a0 Stop seeking wisdom from God through Christ, and you\u2019ll drift away just as easily (Heb 2:1-4).\u00a0 But anchor to Jesus, and you\u2019ll surpass Solomon\u2019s rise to wisdom (1 Cor 1:30).<\/p>\n
