{"id":519,"date":"2009-01-10T15:22:04","date_gmt":"2009-01-10T20:22:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/redeeminggod.com\/?p=519"},"modified":"2015-06-04T18:24:12","modified_gmt":"2015-06-05T01:24:12","slug":"babylonian-talmud-sanhedrin-ch-4-fol-37-recto","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/redeeminggod.com\/babylonian-talmud-sanhedrin-ch-4-fol-37-recto\/","title":{"rendered":"Babylonian Talmud, Sanhedrin, Ch. 4, fol. 37 recto"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>How is that for a blog post title?<\/p>\n<p>Ok, students, I have an assignment for you.<\/p>\n<p>In Josh McDowell&#8217;s book, <em><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Evidence-Demands-Questions-Challenging-Christians\/dp\/0785243631\" target=\"_blank\">Evidence that Demands a Verdict<\/a>, <\/em>he references a quote from the Jewish Babylonian Talmud which supposedly says, &#8220;Woe unto us, for the scepter has departed from Judah, and the Messiah has not come!&#8221; (Babylonian Talmud, Sanhedrin 4,37A). The Rabbi who wrote this was speaking in reference to the prophecy in Genesis 49:10 that the scepter will not depart from Judah until Shiloh comes.<\/p>\n<p>I looked it up, and as far as I can tell, no such quote exists on that page of the Talmud.<\/p>\n<p>So either somebody &#8220;invented&#8221; this quote because it makes a cool point in a sermon, OR the reference in wrong.<\/p>\n<p>I called a &#8220;Jews for Jesus&#8221; friend of mine to see if he uses this quote in his evangelistic efforts, and he said, &#8220;All the time. It is very effective.&#8221; I asked him if he knew if the quote was authentic or not, and he assured me it was, even though he didn&#8217;t know where it could be found.<\/p>\n<p>Then I\u00a0aksed my\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/redeeminggod.com\/lets-party\/\" target=\"_blank\">new Jewish friends<\/a> to help me find it, but they say the quote doesn&#8217;t exist. They suspect that some Christian invented (aka &#8220;forged&#8221;) the quote in an attempt to get Jews to become Christians. If true, somebody better tell all the pastors and authors who use this quote in their teachings (e.g. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.khouse.org\/articles\/1999\/187\/\" target=\"_blank\">Chuck Missler<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/redeeminggod.com\/sermons\/luke\/luke_1_1-25\/\" title=\"Luke 1:1-25 \u2013 God: The Ultimate Promise Keeper\">me<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/search?hl=en&amp;q=scepter+has+departed+from+Judah+and+the+Messiah+has+not+come\" target=\"_blank\">others<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Finally,\u00a0I tried to do some research online to find it, and discovered that lots of people have the same question, but nobody has yet found the quote. I tried to check some Jewish websites, and in the process, found out that\u00a0many Jewish websites &#8220;rest&#8221; on the Sabbath (e.g. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artscroll.com\">www.artscroll.com<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; try to access this site on Saturday before sundown).
