Why do you write?

Why do you write?

I’m not sure why other people write, but I write to learn. Writing, for me, is an attempt to put some order to all those ideas and thoughts bouncing around in my head. They are like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle that come together through the process of writing. Sometimes, it seems I don’t really know what I think about something until I write it. Even then, it’s often more of aย hypothesis.

Nor do I don’t think my ideas are so brilliant that everybody needs to learn them. I am just one of those people that thinks best on paper — or through a keyboard. Sometimes, although a set ofย ideas sound good in my head, when I type them out they look rather foolish.

So why do I post these idea on a blog? Because even though it might make sense to me, I want to bounce these ideas off you. Though it might make sense to me, if it sounds like gibberish to you, or you can show me where I am wrong, I might change my views.

That is part of why I write. Why do you write? And have I said anything foolish recently that you want to point out?

God is a Divorced Person

God is a Divorced Person

In myย Bible reading group, as we read through the Gospel of Matthew, we’ve been looking at the issue of divorce the last two weeks. We will probably discuss it again today.

Many Christians say that divorce is a sin. But this is not true, for God Himself is divorced.

What? Yes, that’s right. In Jeremiah 3:8, God says this:

Then I saw that for all the causes for which backsliding Israel had committed adultery, I had put her away and given her a certificate of divorce… [Read more…]

It’s a party! So Raise your Glass

It’s a party! So Raise your Glass

I imagine that the following video by P!nk ย called “Raise Your Glass” might offend some of my readers. Sorry about that. Of course, I’m not forcing you to watch it…

So why post it? Because it has a great message for the church. No, not that we should stay up ’till 5 am, partying all night long. Although, maybe that would be a good thing for some churches to do every once in a while….

What is the message in this song for the church? That we should stop trying to show how perfect and wonderful and Godly we are, and just embrace our uniqueness. Each one of us is different. Each one of us is broken. Each one of us, as the song says, are nitty gritty dirty little freaks.<

Rather than hide it, we should celebrate it! When we celebrate our differences and the ways we are made unique, the glory goes to God for making us this way. When we rejoice in our weaknesses, our failures, and our mistakes, it shows a hurting world that they too are invited and that God’s grace covers it all.

So why are you so serious? Jesus says over and over in the Gospels that the Kingdom of God is a party. What part of “party” don’t we understand?ย Let’s celebrate that we are wrong in all the right ways. That everybody can join in, whether they are gangsters, gay guys, sumo wrestlers, skaters, or hoola-hoop dancers. So Come on! Raise your glass with me!

Ten Signs Your Church Doesn't Understand Mission

Ten Signs Your Church Doesn't Understand Mission

How can you tell if your church doesn’t understand it’s mission? Over at GraceGround.com, I posted ten possible statements that will clue you in. Here are three:

8. During the opening welcome, you are told that “This is a safe place for you and your family.

9. During the opening welcome, you are invited to “Relax and enjoy your time. Get your batteries recharged.”

10. In the announcements, you learn that there is a budget windfall, and to make the church more attractive to the community the board is trying to decide between repaving the parking lot or repainting the building.

Head on over there to read the rest of the list.

Steam Leaders

Steam Leaders

My wife recently bought a Shark. No, not one of the pointy-toothed predators of the sea, but the effective steam cleaner for all the hard surface floors in your home. One day as I was using it, I looked outside and noticed a road repair crew using a steamroller to repave a section of the street. Seeing how steam could be used in two different ways for two different purposes got me thinking about two different forms of leadership, the Streamroller, and the Steamcleaner. Both have benefits and dangers, but if used properly, can help leaders provide direction to those who follow. [Read more…]
