Laugh! It’s Saturday!

Laugh! It’s Saturday!

I have been posting some pretty heavy stuff recently about the violence of God in the Old Testament.

So, today I want to lighten things up a bit. We want to laugh a little!

Here are two funny pictures I ran across this week, with a few captions for each image that I made up.

Sadly, I cannot now remember where I found these pictures… it was on one of the blogs I read. So if one of these pictures came from your blog, let me know so I can give you credit!

Knife throwing church

Possible Captions:

A knife-throwing church! Yeah, that sounds about right.

I think that many Gospel preachers deserve to have knives thrown at them…

Maybe the Wild Mountain Man will hit Pastor Cummings and end all our misery.

The Blog Post in Which I Ask for Money

The Blog Post in Which I Ask for Money

I have been noticing an increasing number of blogs make requests for money on their sites.

The blog owner says something about how they are doing a design update, or transferring all their posts and podcasts from one blog to another, and it is going to cost them $30,000 (Yes, I saw one blogger state that his new blog was going to cost this much!), and so if you have appreciated all the free posts and free podcasts which the readers have read over the years, would you please consider making a donation of any amount to help defray the costs of the blog.

show me the money

Show Me the Money!

I decided this was such a good idea, I am going to write a blog post asking you, the reader, for money. If you want to make a donation, here is the Paypal button:

Oh, you don’t see a Paypal button?

That’s because there isn’t one!

I hope you know I was kidding…

I mean, I was kidding about asking for money for this blog… I was not kidding that other bloggers are asking for money for their blog. I just don’t understand it…

Let Me Bless You With Your Money

Nevertheless, I am going to ask you for money… but not for me. For you. I want to bless you with your own money.ย

It’s Funny Because It’s True…Which I Guess Makes it Sad

It’s Funny Because It’s True…Which I Guess Makes it Sad

Lark News is my favorite source of fake Christian news. Why would I waste my time reading fake Christian news? Well, for one, because it makes me laugh, but also because the stories are so close to what really happens in Christianity.

Sometimes we need satire to point out the sad reality of what is really going on in our lives, or in this case, our churches.

Here are some of the recent headlines from Lark News. All the stories are fake, but if you didn’t know that, you could almost believe they were true… Sad, but true. Click on the title of each article to read the whole article.

Church sends clown and puppet teams to war-torn Africa

Puppet Show in Africa

KENEMA, Sierra Leone โ€” A short-term missions team from South Coast Community Church in New Orleans, La., arrived in this country racked by three decades of civil war, and began serving the ravaged people through the ministries of clowning and puppetry.

The teamโ€™s first performance was in Makeni, a city in the north where a third of the population has been brutally slaughtered in factional fighting, and those people who remain have no reliable source of food or water.

Looking for the Image of God in Others

Looking for the Image of God in Others

The Image of God in ManHowever we understand the Imago Dei, the image of God in which humans were created, most of us would agree that all people were created in Godโ€™s image.

While some might argue that those who are not in relationship with their creator have lost that image, as is evidenced by what we may believe to be their obvious sin, many of us have come to another conclusion โ€“ that all people continue to bear the image of God in some sense.

Rather than look for the signs of peopleโ€™s brokenness, we choose to look for the image of God in them, and in turn love and honor them not only for who they are, but also for the potential of who they can be in Christ.

Regardless of the condition and situation in which we find any person, we choose (as Jesus himself advised) to love them, and look for whatever we may find of the image of God in them. Regardless of their age, race, physical condition, economic situation, gender, apparent moral or religious position, we choose to love that person.

Practical Application

On the face of the matter, this appears to be a completely idiotic approach. That fellow voted for the wrong guy in the last election, he cheats on his wife, is dishonest in business, drinks like a fish, doesnโ€™t go to church, has crazy religious ideas, and his neighbor tells me he may be gay! Only a total idiot would love and honor such a person.

Iโ€™m quite sure Jesus would approve if I told everyone I know what a nasty piece of work that fellow is. I should be certain to tell all the folks at church so we can confront him with Bible verses that will prove how wrong he is. Itโ€™s our responsibility. That way he will know he is going to hell. Obviously somewhere along the line that fellow lost Godโ€™s image.

Impractical Application

On the other hand, I can choose to spend some time getting to know that fellow, try to build a relationship with him and love him. Rather than point out what I believe to be his sins, I will look for what I can find of Godโ€™s image in him, and will honor him in every way I can. Regardless of what I discover about him, I will learn to love him and let him know I care about him and love him.

When is Enough Enough?

When is Enough Enough?

Due to my recent call for blogs from readers of this blog, I recently started reading A Quest for a New Perspective, and I am loving what Gene is writing there.

enoughIn a recent post called “When is Enough Enough?” he said this:

When is enough enough?

I have a hard time answering that question. Do you?

We have a perfectly good smartphone but we โ€œneedโ€ the latest edition because it provides a few more features that make it a little bit better than the one we have.

We have dozens of shoes boxed in our closets but we โ€œneedโ€ another pair.

We have plenty of clothes hanging above our shoe boxes but we โ€œneedโ€ more.

We have a 50โ€ณ TV but we โ€œneedโ€ a 60โ€ณ.

I deal with these thoughts and temptations everyday. Iโ€™ll bet you do too. Itโ€™s the society we live in. We always seem to want more whether we really need it or not.

Head on over to A Quest for a New Perspective to see how Gene finishes this post.
