Are you an environmentalist? Maybe you think environmentalist are those tree-hugging, liberal lunatics who fight for the rights of rainforest birds and Pacific salmon while ignoring the humans and unborn babies.
I have criticisms of the environmental movement as well, but in this episode of the One Verse Podcast, we see that as followers of Jesus, we should not be condemning the environmentalists, but should actually be leading the way in showing this world how to take care of God’s green earth. The Text of Genesis 1:26-28
Genesis 1:26-28. Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.
Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
In this discussion of Genesis 1:26-28 we look at:
- What it means to have dominion over the earth.
- The two shocking terms Moses used to describe dominion.
- What ancient religions believed about the dominion of the gods.
- The use and abuse of power, and how God redeems power in Jesus.
- Why Christians should lead the world in environmental concerns.

Another good podcast. I have always thought that having dominion meant we were to be the caretakers of the earth and the animals, so I agree with you. It disturbs me when Christian’s seem to interpret it as the right to do whatever we want with God’s creation.
It was interesting to learn that the idea of dominion would have been alarming for the original audience. History is so fascinating.
Thank you for your encouraging words.

Thanks. You are right. I will talk a bit more about this when we look at Genesis 1:28-31 near the end of the year.
Thanks for listening!
