The Daily Writing Routine of C. S. Lewis

The Daily Writing Routine of C. S. Lewis

Writing Routine of CS Lewis

C. S. Lewis lived before computers, cell-phones, TVs, and blogs. Also, for most of his life, he was unmarried. Having said that, all of us who strive to write can learn something from C. S. Lewis about his ideal daily writing routine as a full-time author.

The following comes from chapter 9 of his autobiography: Surprised by Joy: The Shape of My Early Life.

I would choose always to breakfast at exactly eight and to be at my desk by nine, there to read or write till one. If a cup of good tea or coffee could be brought me about eleven, so much the better.

As step or two out of doors for a pint of beer would not do quite so well; for a man does not want to drink alone and if you meet a friend in the taproom the break is likely to be extended beyond its ten minutes.

At one precisely lunch should be on the table; and by two at the latest I would be on the road. Not, except at rare intervals, with a friend. Walking and talking are two very great pleasures, but it is a mistake to combine them. Our own noise blots out the sounds and silences of the outdoor world; and talking leads almost inevitably to smoking, and then farewell to nature as far as one of our senses is concerned. The only friend to walk with is one who so exactly shares your taste for each mood of the countryside that a glance, a halt, or at most a nudge, is enough to assure us that the pleasure is shared.

The return from the walk, and the arrival of tea, should be exactlyย coincident, and not later than a quarter past four. Tea should be taken in solitude, …for eating and reading are two pleasures that combine admirably. Of course not all books are suitable for mealtime reading. It would be a kind of blasphemy to read poetry at table. What one wants is a gossipy, formless book which can be opened anywhere…

At five a man should be at work again, and at it till seven. Then, at the evening meal and after, comes the time for talk, or, failing that, for lighter reading; and unless you are making a night of it with your cronies there is no reason why you should ever be in bed later than eleven.

You are Not Alone

You are Not Alone

I don’t know if it is just because of the economic and social problems of our country, or where I work, or because I deal with it myself, but I am encountering more and more people who struggle with depression.

In a recent book I read (Engaging the Powers), the author suggested that such a response is natural in light of the ever-increasing tide of natural catastrophes and human tragedies that are paraded before our eyes on Television and the Newspapers on a daily basis. The human soul can only bear so much pain, and those who are more sensitive to the suffering in the world, will experience increasing struggles with bouts of fear, anxiety, anger, and depression.

I don’t know if this is correct or not, but one thing I do know: If you are suffering from depression, you are not alone.

I say this not to depress you further, but to let you know that there are others out there who feel the same way, and who struggle with the same things, and one way to cope with your own depression is to connect with others who also struggle with it, to learn from them, help them, and be encouraged by them.

There is a new book coming out in October called Not Alone, edited by Alise Wright, which will help in this way.

Writing Three Books at Once

Writing Three Books at Once

I am one of those people who reads five or six books at once. The reason is that I often get bored with what I’m reading, but I really want to finish the book. So rather than completely stop reading, I just put the book aside to finish later.

I realized recently that my writing projects are similar. I am currently working on three writing projects.

Book Writing

For a while there, I was focusing heavily on aย Commentary on the Gospel of Luke. I haven’t written anything on this since April. Then I switched to a book about church, calledย Close Your Church for Good.ย I haven’t forgotten about this project; I just got bored with it. So over the past several weeks, I switched over to begin writing a different book, one on questioning my theology. I began by questioning the foundations of theology, and then I wrote about 50 postsย questioning what I have been taught about the Bible.

How to Write Like C. S. Lewis

How to Write Like C. S. Lewis

CS LewisTell me if you recognize this story:

During a war, some children are sent to a relative’s house in London while the father is away at war and the mother is sick. While there, they come by a piece of jewelry which magically takes them to other places. In one of these places, they encounter a Queen who knows magical words of power.

Through a series of circumstances, when the children return to London, the Queen comes with them and causes great havoc in London.

After they get her out of London and back into her own land, they journey to other lands where they witness the rise and fall of nations and empires. They finally return home, and their father returns, and the mother gets well, and all is at peace.

If you said, “Oh, that is The Magician’s Nephew by C. S. Lewis” you’d be wrong.
