3 Reasons Christians MUST Celebrate Halloween

3 Reasons Christians MUST Celebrate Halloween

halloweenEvery year around this time, I read all sorts of posts and articles for why it is sinful for Christians to participate in Halloween.

So I decided to write a post about why Christians MUST celebrateย Halloween.

No, I don’t have any Bible verses to back this up or deep theological ideas to prove it. I just have three reasons Christians should celebrate Halloween.

Christians Are Light in the Darkness

Christians often complain that Halloween is a day of death, darkness, and evil. I won’t argue this. For many people, Halloween is a day to celebrate witches, ghouls, ghosts, goblins, death, decay, murder, and many other such things.

But since when do Christians run away and hide from death and darkness? Doesn’t the Bible call us to be lights in the darkness, and to bring life and healing to those areas which are full of death and decay? Of course it does!

Look, you don’t have to dress up like a vampire to participate in Halloween. And definitely don’t judge and condemn those who do. But I would encourage you to go on out and have a good time. Let your kids get some free candy. Laugh! Have a good time. Enjoy life. Make some memories.

Or, if the kids are grown and gone, give out heaps of free candy to the neighborhood. They will remember you forever.

Which brings me to my second point.

Halloween is an Opportunity for Generosity

Halloween is a great opportunity to show Christian generosity. I still remember the two or three houses in my neighborhood that gave away full candy bars on Halloween. Not the little snack-size ones, but full-size candy bars! I couldn’t believe it then, and I still cannot believe it now.

We often bemoan the fact that we don’t know the families in our neighborhoods better, but Halloween is one night of the year where most of the neighborhood families will be knocking on your door. So make an impression on them! Be generous!

I was talking a guy this past week who said he was going to pass out Gospel tracts to the kids in the neighborhood when they came by his door. This also will make an impression on the families who knock on your door, but not in a good way… I tried to encourage him that if he was going to pass out tracts, he should include a huge handful of candy with each one. Let people remember you for being generous, and they might also read that tract that came with your generosity.

Or better yet, they might want to talk to you when they see you in the park, at the mall, or trimming your hedges.

But there is one last reason for Christians to celebrate Halloween….

Halloween Candy

Free Candy!

I am a candyaholic, so I had to include this…

But I am actually kind of serious.

For most children, Halloween is about one thing: candy.

If you have kids, they are going to go to school the day after Halloween, and everyone is going to be talking about how much candy they got. When the kids ask your child how much candy he/she got, do you want them to have to say that they didn’t get any candy because their mom and dad believe Halloween is evil?

As I wrote in a different post about a Trunk-or-Treat I attended, if you feel that Halloween is some sort of contest between Jesus and the devil, one sure way to “win” is by giving away lots of candy. On Halloween, candy is how kids keep score. This goes back to the previous two points. The devil lovesย it whenย Christians hand out Jesus stickers instead of candy on Halloween.

If you hand out Gospel tracts or “Jesus Loves You” pencils instead of candy on Halloween, you are actually bringing shame to the name of Jesus on this day.

Jesus is not glorified when we are cheapskates andย killjoysย in His name.

Let kids be kids! And if you are (rightfully) afraid of what they might see or what they might encounter, then go with them! Walk around the neighborhood with them, giving them that sense of parental security and safety that is so important for children to have.

And guess what? If you do this, I bet they will even share some of their free candy with you…

Saving Sinners from Hell

Saving Sinners from Hell

This is a guest post by Sam Riviera and is a follow-up post to “How to Win Souls… or Not.” Heย spends most of his time and energy caring for others in his community so that through his life and actions they might see Jesus. He has also written โ€œ14 Reasons I Never Returned to the Institutional Church.โ€œ

If you would like to write a guest post for this blog,ย check out the guidelines here.

god and devilGrowing up attending a conservative evangelical church, I was taught that I should invite the โ€œunsavedโ€ to church so they could hear the Gospel preached and have a chance to โ€œget saved.โ€ If they didn’t respond, at least theyโ€™d had a chance. It would be their fault if they ended up in hell. I had done โ€œmy part.โ€

After my wife and I married and began attending another conservative evangelical church, we were surprised to learn that โ€œpersonal evangelismโ€ was the new fad. Somehow the responsibility for getting people saved had landed squarely in our laps. We were told a few people were occasionally getting saved at the end of a sermon at church, but that plan wasnโ€™t working well. Therefore, it was now our personal responsibility to โ€œlead our unsaved friends, family members and neighbors to the Lord.โ€

Most of us Are Failures at Personal Evangelism

Some churches may still emphasize personal evangelism, but I have rarely heard the term mentioned in the past twenty years. Most of us have never โ€œled anyone to the Lord.โ€ So weโ€™d prefer not to be told we should. If our church tries to pressure us in this way, we can always find another church.

What About Proverbs 11:30?

However, doesn’t Proverbs 11:30 tell us โ€œHe that winneth souls is wiseโ€? Should we understand this to mean it is our responsibility to win souls, our responsibility to lead people to the Lord?

Not everyone understands the verse to mean that. Matthew Henry commented โ€œThe righteous are as trees of life; and their influence upon earth, like the fruits of that tree, support and nourish the spiritual life in many.โ€

Providence Baptistโ€™s online Bible study course teaches โ€œSome build a whole system of theology on this verse, believing that they can win men to Christ by their own powers of persuasion. But nowhere else in the Bible is this taughtโ€ฆ. โ€˜Winnethโ€™ is nowhere else so rendered. The Hebrew word appears over 1050 times and is most commonly rendered โ€˜takethโ€™ or โ€˜taketh awayโ€™โ€ฆ. Truly Godโ€™s people are to witness of Him to others, but the Spirit alone can win them to Christ.โ€

soul winning“Lord lay some soul upon my heart. And love that soul through me. And may I always do my part. To win that soul to thee.โ€

Some of us who grew up in church grew up singing that song. We were told it meant we were to be soul-winners. We should do everything possible to โ€œwinโ€ people to the Lord.

How might that look? โ€“ For many of us that meant we should invite people toย church so they could hear the Gospel preached and โ€œget saved.โ€ Once theyโ€™re saved, God and the church would take care of them and we would find someone else to invite to church.

Here are some other ways we are taught to engage in soul winning:

Lord, Lay Some Soul Upon My Heart

Feel a burden for someone I know whoย isn’tย saved. Pray for them. Give them some Christian literature that talks about salvation, and something that would make them want to attend my church.

Resting on the Bosom of Jesus?

Resting on the Bosom of Jesus?

The following is an actual conversation I had with a man today. He came into my office andย requested to sing some songs he wrote in the next church service.

“Possibly,” I said. “I would like to read them first.”

“Read them?” he asked. “Why?”

“Just to see what they say, what they teach, what the content is.”

“Oh. Well, they don’t really have any content. They’re more like choruses — just one sentence sung over and over.”

“Ah.” Alarm bells are going off in my head. “If you don’t have any written down, give me an example of one of these sentences.”

jesus leaning
Yes, I know that this is what he meant by resting on the bosom of Jesus. And sure, we all need a hug every now and then. But nobody wants to sing about the bosom of Jesus.

“Well, my favorite is, ‘Resting on the bosom of Jesus.'”

“… Yeah… we’re probably not going to sing that.”

“Why not?”

“Do you know what a ‘bosom’ is?”

“Yes. It means ‘chest.'”

“Right. And while I know that the KJV sometimes uses ‘bosom’ to refer to men’s chests, the way the word is used today, it primarily refers to women’s chests.”

He looked at me blankly.

“You know,” I explained, “breasts.”

“But Jesus is a man. He doesn’t have breasts.”

“Right. And since that is what the word ‘bosom’ means in most people’s minds, we don’t want to sing about the bosom of Jesus. It’s confusing. But more than that, even if people understand that Jesus is a man and doesn’t have breasts, we would still be singing about resting on his chest, I don’t think this is a song most men want to sing. Most men do not want to sing about resting on the chest of Jesus. We don’t want to feel his breath on our cheek, we don’t want to sit on his lap, and we don’t want to rest our heads on his chest.”

Door-to-Door Evangelism Success

By Jeremy Myers

Door-to-Door Evangelism Success

As a follow-up to my post about some door-to-door evangelists that came to our house, Sam Riviera wrote this fantastic guest post. As with everything Sam writes, I think that this approach to door-to-door evangelism is loving and kind, and helps us represent Jesus to those who come to our door trying to convert us to their religion.

Visits from Jehovahโ€™s Witnesses, Mormons, and others can be an opportunity to show them the love of Jesus.

Many years ago I was in the grocery store.ย A woman approached me.

“Remember me?”ย she asked.

“You look very familiar, but I haven’t seen you recently, have I?”

“No, you haven’t.ย I was one of the Jehovahโ€™s Witnesses who came to your door several times.ย I remember you because you were the only Christian I met who was nice to me.ย I’m not a Jehovah’s Witness anymore and want nothing to do with religion, especially Christians.ย They were mean to me.ย I won’t even talk to them.”

“You’re talking to me.”

“Yes, I’ll talk to you.ย You were nice to me and talked to me about me and my family.”

We continued talking for about fifteen minutes, and then parted ways.

Showing the Love of Jesus

door to door evangelismI grew up next door to a Kingdom Hall.ย I know that many people cycle through the JW movement, and many end up burned on religion, both the JW religion and especially the Christian religion (mostly because of the reception they received when they knocked on the door of people who said they were Christians).ย I view having these folks show up at my front door as an opportunity to show the love of Jesus to someone who is showing me that they are searching for answers.

There are techniques that usually work in dealing with these folks, both the “newbies” and the “dyed-in-the wool” fanatics, techniques which allow us to show them Jesus’ love.ย I usually find these folks easier to deal with than some “Christians” who are extremely certain of (their understanding of/their “version” of) Christianity and the Bible.

Talk to People

When โ€œevangelistsโ€ for any religion show up unannounced at my door, I never invite them into my home.ย Having worked in law enforcement, I know that some people are not who they claim to be and are not associated with the group of which they claim they are a part.ย However, I have seating on my porch, and a table and chairs on the patio by my front door where I can talk to people I do not know.
