Finding Church Authors 19-21

church3In November, my book [scg_html_fc] will be published by Civitas Press. It contains the stories of 36 people and how they have followed Jesus in seeking to live and function within His church. The stories fall into three categories: Leaving Church, Switching Church, and Reforming Church.

Leading up to publication, I am writing several posts which give credit to the authors who made this book possible. Each post will include a short description of three authors and provide a preview summary of their chapters. Below are the descriptions and summaries of three authors in the โ€œSwitching Churchโ€ category.

Finding Church Chapter 19 โ€“ One of the Biggest Problems with Church is Often the Pastor

Wayne Hobson is the author of the e-book, Suffer the Little Children: Understanding and Overcoming Spiritual Abuse and has been in ministry for over 25 years. He studied theology at Wilberforce and Lincoln Universities. He holds a B.A. in Business from La Salle University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he also minored in psychology (including counseling techniques). Wayne is a husband and a father of three childrenโ€”one son and two daughters. Wayne and his wife Dorothy currently reside in North Carolina and he has been a writer for Examiner.com since 2009.

Many people have experienced the fear and frustration of attending a church where the pastor is hungry for power and control. Wayne has experienced this, and shares why he and his wife left such a church. However, this did not keep them away from church altogether. They eventually found a church where the pastors were warm, loving, and trusting.

Finding Church Chapter 20 – Loyalty

Kimberly Parker is author of Radical Love…Forever Changed, a book that identifies the misconceptions about Godโ€™s love and guides the reader to experiencing more of it (RadicalLoveBook.com). You can connect with her through her website, SimplyCreativeWriting.com, where she provides writing and speaking services for businesses, ministries and individuals across the globe.

Door-to-Door Evangelism Success

Door-to-Door Evangelism Success

As a follow-up to my post about some door-to-door evangelists that came to our house, Sam Riviera wrote this fantastic guest post. As with everything Sam writes, I think that this approach to door-to-door evangelism is loving and kind, and helps us represent Jesus to those who come to our door trying to convert us to their religion.

Visits from Jehovahโ€™s Witnesses, Mormons, and others can be an opportunity to show them the love of Jesus.

Many years ago I was in the grocery store.ย A woman approached me.

“Remember me?”ย she asked.

“You look very familiar, but I haven’t seen you recently, have I?”

“No, you haven’t.ย I was one of the Jehovahโ€™s Witnesses who came to your door several times.ย I remember you because you were the only Christian I met who was nice to me.ย I’m not a Jehovah’s Witness anymore and want nothing to do with religion, especially Christians.ย They were mean to me.ย I won’t even talk to them.”

“You’re talking to me.”

“Yes, I’ll talk to you.ย You were nice to me and talked to me about me and my family.”

We continued talking for about fifteen minutes, and then parted ways.

Showing the Love of Jesus

door to door evangelismI grew up next door to a Kingdom Hall.ย I know that many people cycle through the JW movement, and many end up burned on religion, both the JW religion and especially the Christian religion (mostly because of the reception they received when they knocked on the door of people who said they were Christians).ย I view having these folks show up at my front door as an opportunity to show the love of Jesus to someone who is showing me that they are searching for answers.

There are techniques that usually work in dealing with these folks, both the “newbies” and the “dyed-in-the wool” fanatics, techniques which allow us to show them Jesus’ love.ย I usually find these folks easier to deal with than some “Christians” who are extremely certain of (their understanding of/their “version” of) Christianity and the Bible.

Talk to People

When โ€œevangelistsโ€ for any religion show up unannounced at my door, I never invite them into my home.ย Having worked in law enforcement, I know that some people are not who they claim to be and are not associated with the group of which they claim they are a part.ย However, I have seating on my porch, and a table and chairs on the patio by my front door where I can talk to people I do not know.

Like this Post if You Love God

…if you don’t “Like” this post, it must be because you hate God.

I am kidding, of course. But every so often I see these sorts of posts come through Facebook and Twitter. “Retweet this if you love Jesus!” “Love God? Like this!”

So I laughed when I saw this comic.

All Alone with One Another

All Alone with One Another

When I learned Greek and Hebrew, I found it helpful to use mnemonic devices to memorize vocabulary. I would take what the Hebrew or Greek word sounded like, and take the English translation of the word, and then try to come up with a sentence that included both.

So, for example, the Greek wordย speiroย sounds like “sparrow” and it means “to sow.” The mnemonic device I used was “I sow seeds the sparrows eat.” Another example is with the Greek prepositionย epi.ย It sounds somewhat close to “I pee” and means “upon, on, at, by” and so I used the mnemonic device “I pee upon, on, at, or by the tree.” It’s crude humor, but it worked for me!

One Greek word I always thought was somewhat ironic was the Greek wordย allelon.ย It means “one another.” The device I used to memorize this word is “all alone with one another.” I found this device ironic because you would think that no one can be all alone when they are with other people, but the truth is that some people are never more alone than when they are with others.

oneanother

Some of the most lonely people I know are those who have the most friends and go to the most parties. They party as an attempt to fight back the encroachingย lonelinessย that threatens to choke them every minute of every day. Their nearly manic efforts to always be with people and around other people are all because they feel loneliness taking over their lives. Though they are with people all the time, they are all alone most of that time.

The reason behind this is that although such people might beย withย others all the time, very few of those others actuallyย knowย the person.

Finding Church Chapter 16 โ€“What is โ€œChurchโ€ Anyway?

Lauren LaRue attended Douglas Anderson School of Performing Arts during several years of high school, and is currently working on her Bachelors of Science and Psychology. She is a mother and a wife, and an advocate to the broken hearted. Laura enjoys reading, writing, and meditating in her spare time.

Lauren has experienced all the ups and downs of church life. She has led successful ministries in a thriving church, been condemned and outcast by a judgmental church, has sought to help new churches get established, and help dying churches make the necessary changes to survive. Her story is full of pain and frustration, but contains hope for the future. If you have faced troubles in church, you will resonate with Laurenโ€™s story.

Finding Church Chapter 17 โ€“ My Search for a Family

Kellen Freeman is a writer living with his wife in Ohio. He is a graduate from the Methodist Theological School in Ohio with a Master of Theological Studies. He blogs regularly about the intersection of life and faith at KellenFreeman.net. You can also find him on Twitter @kellenfreeman. Kellen is currently writing his first book.

Next Free Ebook – Adventures in Fishing (for Men)

My next free ebook will be out next week!

To receive it, make sure you have subscribed to theย Redeeming God newsletter.

Fishing for Men CoverThe book isย Adventures in Fishing (for Men), and is a satirical look at some of the common evangelistic and church growth strategies of the church today. Yet the book is not directed primarily at the church, but at me.

In some form or another, I am guilty of nearly every โ€œfishingโ€ failure mentioned in this book.Adventures in Fishingย is my confession. It is my repentance.

I sent the book manuscript to several authors I know, and several responded with praise for the book. Here is what one of them said:

Weโ€™re told in the Bible that Jesus never taught without a parable. There was a reason for that. Parables are powerful because they hold up a mirror and force us to see ourselves. I donโ€™t know many people who teach in parables today, but thatโ€™s exactly what Jeremy Myers does inAdventures in Fishing (for Men). He teaches with a parable that will challenge you to change your thinking, get out of your box, and actually become the โ€œfisher of menโ€ that Jesus has called you to become.

Would Jesus Vote?

Would Jesus Vote?

Approved Voter JesusI am not asking, “Who would Jesus vote for?” That question has been beat to death.

Instead, I am asking the more basic question:ย “Would Jesus even vote?”

I believe He would. But before I explain why, let us look at two of the arguments some Christians give for NOT voting.

I know most of the arguments for why some Christians say that we should not vote (see, for example, this book: Electing Not to Vote), and I understand their concerns, but I think that most of these arguments are invalid. Here are two examples:

Voting for Evil

Some say that a vote for “the lesser of two evils” is still a vote for evil.

Well, of course. But unless the candidate is Jesus Christ, you will always be voting for the lesser of two evils.

dont vote pray
It is not an “either-or” option. I would say “Vote AND pray.”

But note that even when we do not vote, we still vote in other ways. Voting is one way of supporting your chosen candidate, but so is paying taxes, using government services, attending school, and supporting our military. Anything that the government does for you, and which you make use of, is a form of affirming and supporting the governmental system that we have. If you do not like the governmental system that we have, then it is your responsibility to help change it. And even if you are successful in changing it, it will still not be perfect, but will be the “lesser of two evils.”

Voting is a Cop-Out

Some Christians say that rather than try to change the world by voting in a flawed candidate, what Jesus really wants is for us to get out into the world and be the change we want to see.

Finding Church Chapter 13 โ€“ Leaving Church in the Age of Social Media

Genevieve Thul is the author of Turquoise Gates (TurquoiseGates.com), a blog about her battle with cancer and the faith transformation itโ€™s birthed in the past four years. She is a contributing author at Dayspringโ€™s faith blog, Incourage.me. Genevieve is in her mid-30s and lives in rural Wisconsin with her husband and four kids. She is currently in the final stages of Ph.D. dissertation work online, and she and her family are searching for a healthy church to call home.

A painful church experience is magnified in a digital age where gossip and slander can spread through social networks faster than ever before. Genevieve learned this through personal experience. In her chapter, the pain is present, but is overcome by hope and love. She concludes with several suggestions for people who find themselves attacked and slandered by church people.

Finding Church Chapter 14 โ€“ Church Change

Shannon Brisco is the Program Officer for a non-profit integral mission organization. She has her bachelor of administration from Tyndale University and her masters of arts in international development from Eastern University. She speaks Spanish and loves to travel, cook, and spend time with her family.

Door to Door Evangelism FAIL

Door to Door Evangelism FAIL

jehovah witnessesWe were in the middle of packing up for our move from New York to Oregon.

There wasย chaos everywhere. Piles of stuff to pack. Piles of stuff to throw out. Phone calls to make. Errands to run. Landlords to deal with.

In the middle of all this chaos, we received a friendly visit from the the Jehovah Witnesses. My wife answered the door, and here is roughly how the conversation went:

Knock, knock.ย

Wendy (opening the door): Hello?

JWs: Hello, do you have a few minutes so we could talk to you about Jesus?

Wendy: No, we’re in the middle of packing up for a move, and everything is chaotic right now. Besides, we already know, love, and follow Jesus. Thanks, though!

JWs: Oh, your moving? Well, is there a time we could come back and talk?

Wendy: No. We’re moving out of state. Look, I have phone calls to make and boxes to pack. I gotta go.

JWs: Okay, but would it be alright if we gave you some literature for you to read and had someone call you?

Wendy: No, we’re moving. We don’t need more books, and definitely don’t need more phone calls. We already believe in Jesus and read the Bible. We’re good. Seriously, I gotta go.

JWs: Okay, well we just wanted to tell you about how to go to heaven, maybe if we could come in for just a minute…

Wendy (wisely interrupting): Look, ย my father died last year, and we know he is in heaven because he believed in Jesus. We know the same will be true of us because we also believe in Jesus. Now, goodbye.

And with that, she shut the door on them.

Finding Church Chapter 10 โ€“ Following the Gypsy King

Tara Pohlkotte currently tells her stories of life, as she discovers it, at her personal blog: www.pohlkottepress.com. She is also a contributing author for another current Civitas Press title: Soul Bare: Reflections on Becoming Human. Holding a BA in Psychology and pursuing her Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy, Tara lives and works in Appleton, Wisconsin with her husband and two children. She loves to read, play cards, dance wildly, people watch, scribble poetry on the back of coloring pages, and spend the weekends in sweatpants with her family.

Tara brings tears to your eyes as she writes about growing up in a judgmental and critical church and the pain this caused herself and her family. She wants her own children to see Jesus, and her chapter includes a letter she wrote to her children about the Jesus she knows, loves, follows, and serves.

Finding Church Chapter 11 โ€“ Leaving for Love

Will Rochow currently works in a Catholic healthcare facility, where, besides his regular duties, he also has many pastoral care opportunities that he enjoys. Will is also a licensed semi-trailer driver and occasionally is still asked to do some relief trucking. Some of Willโ€™s many hobbies include motorcycling, wine making, reading, blogging, and cooking. Will lives with his wife Ginny in Lethbridge, Alberta. They have two adult children.
