Why do you write?

Why do you write?

I’m not sure why other people write, but I write to learn. Writing, for me, is an attempt to put some order to all those ideas and thoughts bouncing around in my head. They are like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle that come together through the process of writing. Sometimes, it seems I don’t really know what I think about something until I write it. Even then, it’s often more of aย hypothesis.

Nor do I don’t think my ideas are so brilliant that everybody needs to learn them. I am just one of those people that thinks best on paper — or through a keyboard. Sometimes, although a set ofย ideas sound good in my head, when I type them out they look rather foolish.

So why do I post these idea on a blog? Because even though it might make sense to me, I want to bounce these ideas off you. Though it might make sense to me, if it sounds like gibberish to you, or you can show me where I am wrong, I might change my views.

That is part of why I write. Why do you write? And have I said anything foolish recently that you want to point out?

God is a Divorced Person

God is a Divorced Person

In myย Bible reading group, as we read through the Gospel of Matthew, we’ve been looking at the issue of divorce the last two weeks. We will probably discuss it again today.

Many Christians say that divorce is a sin. But this is not true, for God Himself is divorced.

What? Yes, that’s right. In Jeremiah 3:8, God says this:

Then I saw that for all the causes for which backsliding Israel had committed adultery, I had put her away and given her a certificate of divorce… [Read more…]

It’s a party! So Raise your Glass

It’s a party! So Raise your Glass

I imagine that the following video by P!nk ย called “Raise Your Glass” might offend some of my readers. Sorry about that. Of course, I’m not forcing you to watch it…

So why post it? Because it has a great message for the church. No, not that we should stay up ’till 5 am, partying all night long. Although, maybe that would be a good thing for some churches to do every once in a while….

What is the message in this song for the church? That we should stop trying to show how perfect and wonderful and Godly we are, and just embrace our uniqueness. Each one of us is different. Each one of us is broken. Each one of us, as the song says, are nitty gritty dirty little freaks.<

Rather than hide it, we should celebrate it! When we celebrate our differences and the ways we are made unique, the glory goes to God for making us this way. When we rejoice in our weaknesses, our failures, and our mistakes, it shows a hurting world that they too are invited and that God’s grace covers it all.

So why are you so serious? Jesus says over and over in the Gospels that the Kingdom of God is a party. What part of “party” don’t we understand?ย Let’s celebrate that we are wrong in all the right ways. That everybody can join in, whether they are gangsters, gay guys, sumo wrestlers, skaters, or hoola-hoop dancers. So Come on! Raise your glass with me!

Are You Saved?

Are You Saved?

In a book I’m currently reading, I came across the following quotes. Those of you who follow the teachings of Zane Hodges, Bob Wilkin, and the Grace Evangelical Society, will appreciate them:

The phrase accept Christ as your personal Savior is not in the Bible. Even personal Savior is absent….

Having your sins forgiven is no doubt a part of (or a prelude to) salvation. But in the Bible salvation means much more than that: if anything, being forgiven is the starting line, not the finish line, of salvation.

Nowhere in the Bible is the term sinner’s prayer mentioned, and no one in the Bible ever says it — at least not in the form that prospective converts are taught to say it today. And it wasn’t until the last 150 year or so that Christian services included “invitations” or “altar calls.” Furthermore, no one has ever or will ever walk down an isle or raise a hand to “get saved.” [Read more…]

Ten Signs Your Church Doesn't Understand Mission

Ten Signs Your Church Doesn't Understand Mission

How can you tell if your church doesn’t understand it’s mission? Over at GraceGround.com, I posted ten possible statements that will clue you in. Here are three:

8. During the opening welcome, you are told that “This is a safe place for you and your family.

9. During the opening welcome, you are invited to “Relax and enjoy your time. Get your batteries recharged.”

10. In the announcements, you learn that there is a budget windfall, and to make the church more attractive to the community the board is trying to decide between repaving the parking lot or repainting the building.

Head on over there to read the rest of the list.

Steam Leaders

Steam Leaders

My wife recently bought a Shark. No, not one of the pointy-toothed predators of the sea, but the effective steam cleaner for all the hard surface floors in your home. One day as I was using it, I looked outside and noticed a road repair crew using a steamroller to repave a section of the street. Seeing how steam could be used in two different ways for two different purposes got me thinking about two different forms of leadership, the Streamroller, and the Steamcleaner. Both have benefits and dangers, but if used properly, can help leaders provide direction to those who follow. [Read more…]

Incarnational vs Attractional

Incarnational vs Attractional

I found the following post over at Backyard Missionary, and thought it was so good, I needed to repost part of it here. The incarnational approach to ministry is one of the best ways to connect with others today.

If Jesus were alive today and his mission was still to โ€™seek out and save the lostโ€™ what might he do?โ€ฆ

Would he hire a building, set up a sound system, develop a music team, drama team, and then do local letterbox drops advising people that they could come and be part of his church on Sunday? Frankly I donโ€™t believe this approach to mission would rate a blip on his strategic radar. The so called โ€˜attractionalโ€™ mode of mission centres its focus on the church service and is dedicated to producing an event that pagans will want to come to. The theory goes that the more professional the service is, the funkier the music, the better the coffee, and so onโ€ the more likely the punters will come, hence the term โ€˜attractionalโ€™. As such the success of mission in this mode is almost always measured by the number who attend on Sunday. While a small minority of larger churches do experience some success with this approach, the overwhelming majority of smaller churches attempting to be Hillsong clones continue to haemorrhage members every week because they cannot offer the same quality of music, preaching or other services that their mega-mall comrades down the road are able to provide. A New Direction on Election

A New Direction on Election

Several years ago, I changed my view on election, predestination, and being chosen. I have written in various places about this, though I cannot think if I have ever written about it online.

But today I read a great quote over at Mark Woodward’s blog, EveryTongue. The quote is by Christopher J. H. Wright, from his book, The Mission of God’s People (p. 72):

Election [i.e., the choosing] of one is not rejection of the rest, but ultimately for their benefit. It is as if a group of trapped cave explorers choose one of their number to squeeze through a narrow flooded passage to get out to the surface and call for help. The point of the choice is not so that she alone gets saved, but that she is able to bring help and equipment to ensure the rest get rescued. โ€œElectionโ€ in such a case is an instrumental choice of one for the sake of many. Binding and Loosing Jesus

Binding and Loosing Jesus

Scripture says that as believers in Christ, He livesย in us, andย we inย Him. This should be a radical, life-transforming infusionย of divine power intoย our lives, but all tooย often, it seems like nothing changes.

I think that sometimes, this is becauseย we have handcuffed Jesus. We are holdingย Him back from all thatย He wants toย do in and through us. There are things I know Jesus wants to do in my own life, but I amย tooย comfortableย  where I am at now, or too scared to move.

Sometimes I imagine myself as being the physically challenged youngerย brother of Jesus,ย holding Him back from having the real fun. Or maybe it’s like the movie Alien whereย Jesus wants to break out of me, and I’m trying to do everything I can to stop Him. [Read more…]

Did Jesus Work?

Did Jesus Work?

I know we all say Jesus was a carpenter, and we all assume he learned the trade from his father, Joseph. We also assume that he worked as a carpenter up until he began his three years of ministry at about the age of thirty.

But did he continue to work as a carpenter even after he began his ministry? We never read about him working in the Gospels (that I can recall). Luke 8:3 indicates that Jesus had some followers who “provided for him from their substance.” Does this mean that he lived off of the donations of benefactors?

I really wish Jesus had worked during his ministry. I also wish he had gotten married and had kids. Yes, I know that this would have created lots of problems for the future of the church, especially in regard to leadership. But it would have given us married, working fathers who also want to teach a good model to follow. Jesus doesn’t fit.ย  [Read more…]
