What is Hades in the Bible? Is it hell?

In previous studies, we have looked at the words sheol, gehenna, abyss, tartarus, and the ‘outer darkness.’ In each case, we have seen that none of these words describe a place of everlasting torment for unbelievers in a place of burning fire.

But what about the New Testament Greek word hadฤ“s?

In this study, we will consider the word hadฤ“s and whether or not it refers to hell as a place of eternal suffering and torment for unbelievers.

Is Hadฤ“s Hell?

One of Greek words that is commonly translated as โ€œhellโ€ in the New Testament is hadฤ“s. But the word hadฤ“s is the Greek equivalent to the Hebrew word sheol.

In the Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible (the LXX), the Hebrew word sheol is most often translated as hadฤ“s. And since we have already seen that sheol is best translated as โ€œgraveโ€ or โ€œpit,โ€ then this hints that the word hadฤ“s should be understood in a similar fashion (cf. 1 Cor 15:55).

But hadฤ“s is More than Just the Grave

In the days of Jesus and the apostles, Jewish teachers were rethinking the concept of the afterlife. The idea of a future resurrection was gaining prominence, and with this idea, people were beginning to speculate about what might happen to humans after they died but before resurrection.

So while most Old Testament texts which refer to sheol can be understood as only referring to a grave in which dead bodies were laid, the New Testament texts about hadฤ“s seem to show an evolution in thinking about what happens to humans after they die.

Those who did not believe in a future resurrection (such as the Sadducees), continued to teach that after death, all people went to the grave (sheol or hadฤ“s) and that was the end.

But those who believed in the resurrection (such as the Pharisees), began to think that there was some sort of conscious existence for the dead as they awaited the future resurrection.

For example, the apostle Peter quotes David (Psalm 16:8-11) as saying that God would not allow his body to see corruption in hadฤ“s, but would raise Him up (Acts 2:26-27, 31). Peter used these texts to defend the idea of the resurrection, and to explain why God raised Jesus from the dead.

Therefore, those who believed in life after death also believed that people continued to exist somewhere and somehow after death while they awaited resurrection.

But they did not have a โ€œheaven and hellโ€ concept as many do today. Instead, people in the days of Jesus believed that all the dead went to the same place, though with different โ€œcompartmentsโ€ for the righteous and the wicked (Josephus, Antiquities, 18.14).

This concept is seen in the story of the rich man and Lazarus in Luke 16:19-31. But Jesusโ€™ use of this imagery should not be seen as an endorsement of it. Just as someone today might tell a story about meeting Peter at the Pearly Gates without believing that this is actually what will happen, so also, Jesus could tell a story about Abrahamโ€™s bosom in hadฤ“s (Luke 16:22-23) without actually endorsing the concept.

What is hades is it hell

Yet those who believed that hadฤ“s was an actual realm in which the dead consciously existed, also believe that the dead would not exist there forever. Instead, hadฤ“s was a โ€œholding tankโ€ for people while they waited for the resurrection. At some point in the future, when the resurrection occurred, hadฤ“s would be emptied because all of the dead within it would be raised to life.

But this was not an endorsement of Universalism. Though hadฤ“s would be emptied through the resurrection of all people, the righteous would go away to everlasting life with God, while the rest would go away to everlasting death with the devil (cf. Revelation 20:13-14).

This idea does not match the modern concept of hell, for in this first-century way of thinking, the people who go to hadฤ“s do not stay there forever.

So what is the New Testament concept of hadฤ“s?

What did Jesus and the apostles have in mind when they taught and wrote about hadฤ“s?

Several New Testament texts provide a shocking insight into the nature and location of hadฤ“s.

Matthew 11:23 (Luke 10:15) and hadฤ“s

For example, Jesus indicates that the hadฤ“s is set in contrast to heaven. In Matthew 11:23, Jesus says that while Capernaum was exalted to heaven, it will be brought down to hadฤ“s (cf. Luke 10:15). Does this mean that citizen of Capernaum were all headed for eternal suffering in the pit of hell? No, it cannot mean this, unless the citizens of Capernaum were all previously in heaven. Such an idea makes no theological sense. Even those who believe that it is possible for a person to lose their eternal life do not think that those in heaven can still be sent to hell.

Therefore, it is better to see that Jesus is speaking of both heaven and hadฤ“s in symbolic ways.

In Matthew 11:23 and Luke 10:15, Jesus is speaking of heaven as a reference to the apparent blessing of God upon a city in this life and on this world. The city of Capernaum had great fame, honor, glory, wealth, power, and respect in the minds of most people.

Going down to hadฤ“s, therefore, symbolizes the opposite. The city would lose its power, privilege, and position and would become weak, poor, and desolate, much like Tyre and Sidon (Luke 10:13) or Sodom and Gomorrah (Matt 11:23-24).

The โ€œday of judgmentโ€ to which Jesus refers in these texts does not refer to some future judgment when all the people of these cities are condemned to eternal punishment in hell, but rather to the historical events which cause the physical destruction of the cities.

So when Jesus teaches about hadฤ“s in Matthew 11:23 and Luke 10:15, He is speaking about the destruction of cities on this earth in history; not about the torment of human souls in fiery flames for all eternity.

Matthew 16:18 and hadฤ“s

The greatest insight into what Jesus believed about hadฤ“s is found in Matthew 16:18. In the preceding context, Peter has just declared that Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah.

In response, Jesus states that it is on this declaration from Peter that He will build His church. Jesus then says that the โ€œgates of hadฤ“sโ€ will not prevail against the church. Since the church Jesus is building exists here and now, on this earth, in and through our lives, this means that hadฤ“s also is here and now, on this earth, and it is set against the church.

Furthermore, the church is on the offensive against the gates of hadฤ“s, rather than the other way around. But the gates will not prevail, or stand, against the attacks of the church.

When many people read Matthew 16:18, they imagine that the church exists behind a gleaming white wall, and that hell is on the outside, trying to batter down the gates.

But as I point out in my book, (#AmazonAdLink) The Death and Resurrection of the Church, the imagery is actually the opposite.

In Matthew 16:18, Jesus says that the โ€œgates of hadฤ“s will not prevailโ€ against the church. In other words, it is hadฤ“s that is behind a wall, and the church is attacking the gates.

And in order for the church to attack these gates, they must exist in this life and on this earth.

This further means that humans are imprisoned by these gates, so that the way Jesus builds His church is by attacking the gates of hadฤ“s to rescue and deliver those within.

It appears, therefore, that in the mind of Jesus, hadฤ“s is not a dwelling place for evil people in the afterlife, but is the experience of many people in this life, which is characterized by everything that is opposed to the ways of Jesus Christ and the will of God on earth.

So rather than life, light, liberty, and love, those who are trapped behind the gates of hadฤ“s live in bondage, corruption, despair, and destruction.

Jesus leads His church to help free these people from their hellish life.

Hadฤ“s is here and now, and Jesus leads to the church to set free those who trapped behind its bars.

The Book of Revelation and hadฤ“s

The book of Revelation also contains several references to hadฤ“s and while many people are most familiar with the reference in Revelation 20:13-14 where hadฤ“s is emptied and its inhabitants are cast into the Lake of Fire, we must first understand the previous references to hadฤ“s in Revelation (Rev 1:18; 6:8) before we can understand what John is talking about in Revelation 20.

In Revelation 1:18, we read that through His death and resurrection, Jesus gained the keys to death and hadฤ“s.

the Greek god hadesWhat is interesting about this is that the Greek god Hadฤ“s was occasionally depicted in Greek mythology as carrying a key to the gates of the underworld. He kept the gates forever locked so that nobody who was within could ever escape.

But in Revelation 1:18, we see that Jesus now carries the keys, and He plans to throw the gates of hadฤ“s wide open.

When Revelation 1:18 is read in connection with Matthew 16:18, we discover that when Jesus storms the gates of hadฤ“s with the church, there is no battle waged.

Jesus simply walks up to the gates and unlocks the door, calling those who are within to โ€œCome forth!โ€ The task of the church is to show people how to be free and live life.

Death and hadฤ“s are once again paired together in Revelation 6:8. Death is depicted as riding a pale horse, though the โ€œgreenish-yellowโ€ color of a corpse is probably a better translation for the Greek word used here.

Of the four horsemen in the context, this fourth rider is the only one who is given a name (i.e., โ€œDeathโ€), and is also the only one who does not have a tool or weapon. However, in place of a weapon, Death has hadฤ“s. This means that while the other horsemen accomplish their devastation through an instrument, death accomplishes its task through hadฤ“s.

In other words, hadฤ“s is not a place to which people go after they die; instead, hadฤ“s is the tool by which the rider on the pale horse brings death and destruction upon the world.

Death comes upon this world through the instrument of death, namely, hadฤ“s.

Once again, this shows that hadฤ“s is a present experience for some people; not a future place of existence.

In Revelation 20:13-14, we read that death and hadฤ“s are thrown into the Lake of Fire. If we believe that hadฤ“s is a place, then this description make little sense.

But when we recognize that death and hadฤ“s are the powers that destroy and devastate life on this earth, then it comes as no surprise than before Jesus restores all things to the way God wants and desires them to be, He does away with death and destruction (hadฤ“s) by throwing them into the Lake of Fire.

So โ€œhellโ€ is not a good translation for the Greek word hadฤ“s

While the most basic meaning for hadฤ“s is similar to sheol, the grave, further development in the New Testament era reveals that hadฤ“s can primarily be understood as the power of despair, decay, and destruction that enslaves human beings in this life.

Hadฤ“s operates in direct contradiction to the kingdom of God and the power of life, light, and love that accomplishes the will of God on earth.

Hadฤ“s is not a place of burning suffering for the unregenerate dead. It is instead a destructive presence here on earth that ruins what God wants for our lives. And in the end, just as with everything else that is arrayed against God, hadฤ“s will be cast into the Lake of Fire. But what does this mean?

Conclusion

This brief study has shown that the word hadฤ“s does not refer to hell as a place of eternal suffering in burning flames for the unbelieving dead.

So far in our study, we have seen the same thing about sheol, gehenna, the abyss, tartarus, and the outer darkness.

But what about “the Lake of Fire”? Surely this term in Scripture refers to a place of everlasting burning and torment for unbelievers! Doesn’t it? Join us next week to find out…

Christians Should Go to Hell

No, I am not condemning or cursing Christians to hell. Instead, I am inviting them to follow Jesus wherever He leads โ€ฆ even when it is straight to hell. In other words, I am saying that Jesus is leading you to go to hell.ย 

Let me explain.

The Gates of Hell Will Not Prevail Against It

In my book, (#AmazonAdLink) The Death and Resurrection of the Church, I point out that the very first time Jesus talked about the church, He said that He was going to build it and that that gates of hell would not prevail against it (Matthew 16:18).

When most Christians read this, they imagine the church as this impregnable fortress, with huge white granite walls, behind which all the people of God huddle together in safety as the forces of evil attack from outside.

When most Christians read Matthew 16:18, they think Jesus is saying that the church He is building will be a place for Christians to safely wait out the onslaught of the invading hordes of hell.

But this is exactly the opposite of what Jesus says. In Matthew 16:18ย Jesus says that the gates of hell will not prevail against the church.ย Do you see? Jesus is saying that the church He is building will go to hell and storm the gates of hell.

In other words, who has the gates and walls which keep out the invading army? Not the church, but hell.

And therefore, who is the invading army? Not hell, but the church.

When Jesus describes the church He is building, it is not the church which has the walls and gates, but hell. And it is not the devil and his forces that are attacking the gates of the church, but the church which is attacking the gates of hell. It is the church which will go to hell to rescue those who are there.

The gates of hell are under siege by Jesus and His church.

Jesus storms the gates of hellIt is not the church that is attempting to hide behind gleaming walls as against an invading army. No, it is Satan and his minions who are huddled behind their blackened walls, hoping that the gates will hold.

Jesus says they will not. Jesus says the gates of hell will not prevail. They will not stand. The gates of hell will fall to the invading church.

Of course, this presupposes that the church is on the offensive. That the church is invading hell. That the church has followed Jesus to hell.ย That the church will go to hell with Jesus.

Itโ€™s an exciting prospect!

But there is something else in Jesusโ€™ statement as well.

Where is Hell? It is Here and Now

If the church is here in this world, and if Jesus is leading the church to attack the gates of hell nowโ€ฆ then this means that hell is here and now as well.

It has been said that the greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didnโ€™t exist. If thatโ€™s true, the second greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the church that hell existed only in the afterlife, and only for unbelievers.

The truth, as indicated by Jesus Himself in Matthew 16, is that hell is here and now.ย  Hell is a kingdom on this earth, and Jesus launched His attack on the gates of hell by inaugurating the kingdom of God on earth. We are now in the middle of a struggle between two kingdoms, and Jesus has shown us that the gates of hell will crumble and fall so that His rule and reign will cover the earth, until every knee bows and every tongue confesses that Jesus Christ is Lord (Rom 14:11; Php 2:10).

If the church is going to go to hell with Jesus, then this means that the gates of hell must exist here and now, on this earth, during our lives, so that we can go to hell and attack the gates.

In his excellent article, โ€œHell is a Kingdom,โ€ Brad Jersak writes this:

โ€œHell is a kingdom, located wherever people are imprisoned and oppressed by the โ€˜the powersโ€™ and death-dealers of โ€˜this present darknessโ€™โ€”whether itโ€™s the military-industrial-complex, corporate or political beasts, or any personal affliction, addiction or obsession of choice. โ€ฆ Jesus is not calling the death-snares of this world hades metaphorically in anticipation of the actual subterranean post-mortem hades. Just the opposite: the afterlife mythology of hades is a metaphor for the actual human condition โ€˜here above.โ€™ The rhetoric or hell is less about the eschatological future and more about educating us in the โ€˜two waysโ€™ or โ€˜two kingdomsโ€™ competing for our allegiance here on earth.โ€ (Sinner Irenaeus, aka Brad Jersak, โ€œHell is a Kingdom: The Missing Motif Reconstructed,โ€ 6).

The message of the kingdom of God as taught by Jesus must be read in light of the idea that hell as a present reality.

It is to the humans caught in the kingdom of hell that Jesus said, โ€œThe Kingdom of God is at handโ€ (Matt 4:17) This is not a promise to claim as we wait to die so we can go to heaven and spend an eternal bliss with God. This is a war cry. It is the declaration of Jesus the thief, entering into the strongmanโ€™s house, to tie him up and steal his possessions. What possessions? This world and the human beings upon it (Matt 12:29).

So the Church Should Go to Hell

the church should go to hellThe terrible, tragic reality is that while the church gets so caught up in the debate about who goes to hell, and how long they will be there, and whether or not hell is a place of eternal suffering or temporary purification, we are ignoring the people living in hell on earth all around us.

The debate about hell keeps us from helping those who are suffering in the kingdom of hell here and now. Isnโ€™t that sadly ironic? We strengthen and enable hell by discussing and debating hell.

So where do you see the gates of hell in the lives of your family members? Where do you see the influence and power of hell in your neighborhood? Where do you see hell in your town or city? How can you go to hell by rescuing and delivering them?

Where do you see people living in addiction, bondage, guilt, shame, and fear? Where are they abused, maligned, neglected, forgotten, overlooked, abandoned, and forsaken? Where are they sold? Where are they starving? Where are they seeking love?

Wherever you see such things, you see the gates of hell.

What is the plan of attack to charge these gates and tear them down? With Jesus at your side, these gates will not prevail against you.

There are two kingdoms at war in this world, the kingdom of heaven and the kingdom of hell. Jesus is calling you to participate in one by storming the gates of the other.
