Why is the Bible a Story?

By Jeremy Myers
1 Comment

Why is the Bible a Story?

Did God give us the kind of book He wanted, or did He give us a book that we would have to make into the kind of book we wanted?

To ask the question is to answer it.

We must accept the Bible the way God gave it to us, trusting that the kind of book we need is the kind of book God gave. If we want something different than what God gave, that is our problem, not His.

What kind of book did God give us? God gave us a story.

So now the question before us is not how we can rearrange the story and cut it up into pieces to make it more โ€œhelpful,โ€ but rather to figure out why God chose to give us such a book.

The Bible as Story

Why did God give us a Story?

The answer is that God knows that a story is more powerful than a list. A story has more transformative power than a doctrinal statement or an ethical code of conduct.

When the Bible is taken as a story, it becomes far more powerful and effective in changing lives and transforming society than any book of doctrine or code of ethics ever could.

Assessing the Mormon Faith

Assessing the Mormon Faith

The MormonsI work with people from many different religions, and have read books about all of these religions from the Christian perspective. I have also read books about Christianity from the perspective of these other religions.

My usual impression of these books–whether written by Christians about another religion, or written about Christians from the perspective of another religions–is that they are harsh, overly critical, and tend to unfairly treat and quote the religion that is being critiqued.

So it was with a sense of relief and surprise that I recently read The Mormon Faith: A Theological Assessment by William W. Wells. Here is why I appreciated this book:

First, of all, it is not a long book. Only 75 pages. William Wells knew what he wanted to say, and he said it.

Second, the book is written with truth AND love. William shows that while Christians can — and must! — point out the differences between Christianity and Mormonism, we can do so with love. This book was written with love and grace, which is so rare in books of this kind.

The Bible we Want vs. The Bible God Gave

The Bible we Want vs. The Bible God Gave

All Christians know that Scripture is our guide.

This is why we have Bible Studies and sermons, daily devotions and Scripture memory. We believe that the Bible is the Word of God and is a guide for all matters of faith and practice. This is well and good. The Bible is a primary source of guidance for following Jesus into the world.
Bible from God

But why is there disagreement?

Even though we all agree that the Bible is our guide, there is great disagreement on what the Bible says about what to believe and how to live.ย With all of the doctrinal confusion and lifestyle chaos that is in the church, some have begun to wonder whether the Bible is helpful after all.

As one who has been wrestling with this issue for over a decade, I have finally come to piece together what I believe is not so much a conclusion on the matter, but is rather a working hypothesis.

A Gay Twitter Conversation

A Gay Twitter Conversation

Gay Twitter LGBTI wrote a post a while back about loving LGBT people.

Recently I Tweeted about the post and ended up having an interesting conversation on Twitter about it.

Here is the conversation:

The sin of Sodom was not homosexuality, but that they they ate too much food without taking care of the poor and needy. Ezekiel 16:49

@sandpiper64 If we reject LGBT people from church membership we should also reject those who are liars, cheats, selfish, angry, and gluttons

Subversive Kingdom of God

By Jeremy Myers

Subversive Kingdom of God

Subversive KingdomOne of the keys to understanding Scripture and the role of the church today is to understand the Kingdom of Heaven.

However, far too many Christians think of the Kingdom of heaven as the equivalent of “heaven.” As a result, when they read in Scripture what Jesus has to say about the Kingdom, they completely misunderstand what He was teaching because they think He was only talking about something that will affect us after we die.

As Ed Stetzer points out in his new book,ย Subversive Kingdom, nothing could be further from the truth.

The Kingdom of Heaven is at Hand

One of Jesus’ favorite saying was that “The Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.” By this, Jesus meant it was as close to us as our hand. In other words, the kingdom is here. It is now. It is present. It has been inaugurated.

Yes, I know… You read about the peace and happiness that is supposed to characterize the Kingdom, and then you look around at the mess our world is in, and say to yourself, “If this is the Kingdom, then Scripture must be wrong. Since Scripture cannot be wrong, this cannot be the kingdom.”

But there is a big difference betweenย inaugurationย and consummation.

What’s Next for Your Church (Where to go from here)

What’s Next for Your Church (Where to go from here)

next for the churchFollowing Jesus sometimes seems dangerous. If it doesn’t, you might not be following Him.

So start slowly.

Take a simple step.

If you and your church decide to take some of the suggestions in my book, Close Your Church for Good,ย and are trying to decide what to do next, let me offer the same advice that is given by Robert Farrar Capon in his book, The Astonished Heart:

My program would be this. Whoever was in command over the dying institutionโ€ฆ would take the bull by the horns and kill it: close the church, dissolve the board, sequester its endowments, and sell off its property, putting the proceeds in escrow just in case the corpse ever rises and finds a use for them. Then the managers would explain to the remaining members of those churches that they were free to do anything they could think of (or nothing at all, if they so chose). A suggestion would be made, however, that they might think of holding a kind of wake on the next Sunday, perhaps in one of their homes, or in a restaurant or bowling alley that didnโ€™t open until 1:00 p.m. And if they took that suggestionโ€ฆ.

Well, they might sit and stare blankly at each other to begin with. But with any luck, some free spirit (young or old) among them would break the ice with the questions they had never before been able to askโ€”namely: โ€œWho are we?โ€ โ€œWhy on earth are we here?โ€ And, most important of all, โ€œWhat do we think weโ€™d actually like to do?โ€ Having no model at all to meet the upkeep on and no known shape to whip themselves into, they would for the first time be open to looking for really new answersโ€”honest answersโ€”that could range anywhere from โ€œWe havenโ€™t the foggiest notion, but letโ€™s get together next Sunday and see if anythingโ€™s occurred to us in the meantime,โ€ to โ€œWeโ€™re here to be the church, I supposeโ€”whatever that means,โ€ to โ€œHow about for openers we just try to stick with fellowship, breaking bread, and saying prayers?โ€”maybe God will take care of the rest, if He wants any.โ€

Lost on the Road Trip

Lost on the Road Trip

The Road Trip that Changed the WorldHave you ever heard of Jack Kerouac and his book, On the Road?

Maybe I’ve been living in a hole, or maybe I am too young, but until I read Mark Sayers’ new book, The Road Trip that Changed the World I had never heard of Kerouac. Since I had never heard of him, I often found myself wishing for a road map as I readย The Road Trip that Changed the World,ย because I felt lost.

Mark Sayers posits the unlikely theory (his words, not mine) that Jack Kerouac’s book changed American culture, the church, and the way we all live and view life. Calling this an “unlikely theory” is an understatement.

Ultimately, I agree with what Mark Sayers has written. He wants to argue that during the past fifty years, American culture and church culture has radically changed. I couldn’t agree more.

But to blame Jack Kerouac and his books for this change is to give Kerouac way too much credit.

Mark Sayers would have been better off using Kerouac as an example of the changes that were taking place in culture than to give Kerouac the credit for being the genesis and originator of these changes. In other words, it is much more probable that culture was changing — and with it the church — and one person who exemplified these cultural shifts was Jack Kerouac. He lived out the changes that were occurring, but was not himself the catalyst and creator of these changes. Taking this approach, would have made Mark’s book much stronger.

But what about the changes themselves? I think Mark does a pretty good jobย describingย and analyzing many of the changes that haveย occurred. Toย nameย just a few, Mark writes about how nothing is sacred (p. 107), how feelings have become more important than faith (p. 114), and how society worship idols of self-satisfaction and consumerism (p. 203).

For the most part, I think Mark has correctly analyzed some of the dangers and pitfalls of our contemporary culture. He has a good read on the pulse of our society. I just wish he had left Kerouac out of it. My favorite chapters in the book were the few where Kerouac was barely mentioned (if at all). Chapters 17, 18, and 19 were three of the best chapters in the book, and these chapters were focused more on gleaning insights from the Scriptural accounts of Adam and Abraham. I found Mark’s insights into these biblical texts to be insightful and helpful. I wish he had done more of this type of writing.

No Place or Person is Too Sinful

No Place or Person is Too Sinful

Light in the DarknessIf the church wants to follow Jesus into the world, we must begin by looking in our town, in our community, and in our neighborhood for the places that are dark and sin-filled. We must have the courage and the faith to see those places and those people set free from their slavery to sin in the kingdom of darkness and redeemed into the peace and love of the kingdom of light.

There is no place off limits.

There is not place that is too sinful.

There is no place that is too corrupt.

The raging fire of the Gospel of Jesus can overcome and outshine any darkness, any sin, any corruption.

The Power of Redemption

I believe that the church has not yet begun to understand the power of redemption. Jesus wants not just to redeem every person on earth, but every place and event as well. Through redemption, Jesus not only transforms and rescues you and I, but also pagan holidays, wicked places, torn nations, and corrupt governments.

Wanted: Missional Entrepreneurs

Wanted: Missional Entrepreneurs

freedom and redemptionFollowing Jesus into freedom will look different in different situations, with different people, who live in different cultures, all of whom have different gifts, desires, strengths, abilities, and who seek to love and serve different neighbors and people in different communities.

But it doesnโ€™t need to be anything grand. Despite our cultureโ€™s propensity toward going big and making a splash, most methods of advancing Godโ€™s kingdom of freedom and love begins with doing whatever you can, wherever you are, with the people who are around you right now, using whatever you have.

Following Jesus does not require big budgets and bigger buildings. It begins with something small. An act of kindness. A word of forgiveness. A smile. A willingness to cross the street, to strike up the conversation, to ask someone how they are doing and not take โ€œFineโ€ as an answer.

Following Jesus means that we have the liberty and freedom to explore new ways of doing ministry with new types of people.

Traditional Church Lets Millions of People Down

While the traditional ways are tried and tested, they still let a lot of people slip through the cracks. There are millions of people in our cities and states that will never be loved or served by the traditional ways of church.
