How to get your Christian book Published in 10 simple steps

How to get your Christian book Published in 10 simple steps

Do you want to get your Christian book published? I know the secret to doing so, and it only takes 10 simple steps. Here they are, in order:

Get-Book-Published

10 Simple Steps to Getting Your Christian Book Published

1. Have some HUGE sins in your past. The worse the better. Like a devil-worshipping, drug addict, psycho-killer porn star.

2. Plant a mega church. You probably need a minimum of 4000 people attending your 17 weekend services.

3. Become best friends with Rick Warren, Joel Osteen, and Oprah.

4. Write a blog that gets about 2 million pageviews a day.

5. Get 5,000,000 of your best friends to “Like” your page on Facebook.

6. Ask 10,000,000 of your friends to follow you on Twitter.

7. Get interviewed on a couple Morning News shows and Late Night Comedy shows.

8. Write a book that is absolute crap. It should say nothing, mean nothing, and challenge nothing. Just make sure it has a bunch of tear-jerking stories with a few funny stories mixed in for good measure. To make the book “Christian” through in some remarks about Jesus, a few Bible quotations, and a crap-load of Christian platitudes and clichés (How about some of these?)

9. Send a query letter to an agency or publisher talking about #1-8.

10. Get published and enjoy the glory of being a Christian author. Seriously. People will think you’re Jesus.

Does all that sound impossible?

Well, publishing these days is not quite as hard as that. I have recently started seeing books get published by authors who skip steps 1-7 and just focus their hardest on Step 8. They’re quite successful at it too. Then they get published and people think they’re Jesus … and they think it too.

Christan book published in 10 steps

Ok, ok.

I’m just having a little fun with the Christian publishing industry. There are lots of really great books out there, and you can’t fault the publishing industry for only publishing books that sell in a day when people are reading only 2 or 3 books a year.

Having said that, I still sometimes scratch my head when I see what they are publishing. I occasionally read a book that “sells,” and I think, “Why does this book sell?”

Of course, now I’m a bit worked up.

So let me rant a little bit…

While I am on the subject of the publishing industry, let me make one little tiny suggestion to publishers and book agents: Please, out of respect and courtesy to the authors who submit books to you, don’t you think it would be wise to create a little form letter that you send to authors whose books you reject? These authors slave over their books, and then put them out there with fear and trembling hoping they picked for publishing, and when you reject their manuscript, you don’t even have the courtesy to send them a letter which says,

Thanks for sending in your book. We looked it over and have decided that it does not fit our publishing needs at this time. Best of luck in your future publishing efforts!

No, that would be too hard and too kind. Instead, on your websites you say, “If you don’t hear back from us in 8 weeks, just assume that we don’t want to publish your book.”

WHAT? Really? That is how you treat authors?

No wonder so many of us are deciding to just self-publish. It would not be that hard to send out a simple form letter to all authors whose books you reject. It’s the least you could do for the, rather than leaving them in rejection limbo land.

And they wonder why the publishing industry is in trouble … between crap books and publishers who just don’t give a crap, it’s a wonder they’ve survived this long.

End rant.

But not the end of my attempt at humor…

Now that I’ve trashed the publishing industry, let me show you that I know what I’m talking about. Here are my own writing credentials:

Jeremy Myers is an internationally unrecognized Bible scholar, the leading theology expert in his own family, author of many #1 best-selling books (in the category of “Books by Jeremy Myers), and his podcast was recently voted the best Bible teaching podcast of 2016 by his wife and three daughters. Rick Warren recently said absolutely nothing about Jeremy Myers, and N. T. Wright has never consulted Jeremy about anything. Jeremy also writes a blog, along with every other person on planet earth.

(N. T. Wright, by the way, writes very, very good books. There is never any crap in his books. I doubt he has ever even written the word “crap.” I’ve written it 6 times in this one post. So I guess that just goes to show that I also write crap. There’s 7.)

As a side note, you might have noticed that my personal blog post quality has slipped over the past couple months. The post above is a perfect example. Ha! This is because I am working on something very big, quite exciting, and extremely time-consuming. It is something I have wanted to do for a very long time, and am finally taking the plunge. I will share more in the weeks ahead. Stay tuned!

(Oh… by the way, if you want to self-publish your book, I lay out exactly how I do it in my Book Publishing Instructions. I published this book for me so I don’t forget how. Seriously. I have a copy next to my desk which I work through every time I publish a book. But you are welcome to get a copy for yourself as well. There are more than 10 steps though…)

Publish your Book with Redeeming Press

Publish your Book with Redeeming Press

Get publishedWant to get your book published? Do you have a manuscript and are seeking a publisher, or are thinking of writing a book, but don’t know where to begin?

Let me introduce you to Redeeming Press!

Redeeming Press is publishing the way it was meant to be. It is publishing with generosity and grace. It is publishing that focuses on the author rather than on profits.

Almost exactly one year ago, I decided to start a publishing company.

I saw then, and am even more convinced now, that the publishing industry was rapidly changing, and that most publishing companies in the world were not properly adapting to these changes. In fact, most of the publishing companies were actively fighting against and trying to hinder the changes!

So I started brainstorming about how a publishing company could operate which would take advantage of some of the publishing methods in a way that would:

  1. Allow new and undiscovered authors to get published
  2. Allow books to get into print more quickly
  3. Allow authors to receive a larger royalty payment than normal

After several months of brainstorming, talking with others in the publishing industry, doing hundreds of research on publishing methods, and reading dozens of books about publishing, I ended up with a process for book publishing which accomplished all three of my goals.

Benefits of Redeeming Press

PUblishing at Redeeming PressThrough my brainstorming, I think I found a way to “redeem the press,” that is, to remove some of the negative elements of the publishing industry, and add in some elements and principles of the Kingdom of God, specifically, elements of truth, generosity, and grace.

  1. While most publishing companies want authors who have a big “platform,” Redeeming Press primarily cares about big ideas. If you have a book which presents truth in a fresh way, we might be interested in publishing it.
  2. While most publishing companies take a year or more to get your book into print, we can get your book into print within a few months.
  3. While most publishing companies pay their authors 10% royalties, we created a payment structure that allowed authors to make 30% royalty payments on their book (and even up to 45% in certain circumstances).

Redeeming Press Projects

Currently, Redeeming Press is working with three authors, and we are talking with about a dozen more. Updates on who these three authors are and what books they will be publishing will be announced soon over at Redeeming Press.com

If you are an author (or want to be one), I invite you to consider publishing your book with Redeeming Press.

Head on over to Redeeming Press.com to get started.

Oh, and while you are there, sign up for the Redeeming Press newsletter. The newsletter will give you updates about authors, newly published books, and some tips and suggestions for writing and preparing your own book for publication. Besides that, in a week or two, newsletter subscribers will get a shortened and condensed version of my Book Publishing Instructions.

The Publishing Gatekeepers are Defeated

The Publishing Gatekeepers are Defeated

I have been hearing lots of complaints recently from traditional publishers, authors, and agents that some of the changes in the publishing world are ruining books forever. Their rants go something like this:

Now that everybody can publish a book, there’s going to be so much garbage out there! And it’s all so cheap! How can I charge $24.99 for a book if someone else is selling theirs for $2.99?!! How can I make a living?! We must stop all the independent publishers! We must tell the independent authors that their books are no good unless they get published through traditional publishing methods! We must tell the wannabe authors their ideas are no good! We must force Google, Amazon, and Apple to pay us more money!

I say that the eBook revolution will do for book publishing what the Gutenberg press did for book printing. And the sooner we embrace it, the better off we’ll be. There is publishing evolution going on, and those who fight it will become extinct.

ebook publishing evolution

The publishing gatekeepers with their secret handshakes and lofty glares remind me of the black knight in “Monty Python and the Holy Grail.” In case you haven’t seen it, here’s the video.

King Arthur represents the legion of authors who have tried to get published through traditional means for scores of years, only to be told “None shall pass!” The King even invited the Black Knight to join his quest, but the Knight refused. When King Arthur tried to pass by without a quarrel, the Knight blocked his way. So they battle.

As the battle progresses, the Black Knight loses both arms and both legs, and through it all, he still thinks he is going to win. Even as King Arthur and “Patsy” trot off (yes, with their coconuts… if you don’t understand, you have to watch the whole movie), the Black Knight screams after them, “Come back here! … I’ll bite your legs off!” Even after King Arthur cuts the Black Knight’s arms and legs off, the Black Knight still thinks he controls the bridge.

ebook publishingThis is the situation in the current publishing world. The gatekeepers think they still control the bridge, but Amazon, Google, Apple and a legion of self-published authors and independent publishers have hacked off the legs and arms of the traditional publishing methods.  As we trot off into the publishing sunset, they yell after us, “Come back here! I didn’t give you permission to get published! You yellow bastards! Come back here and take what’s coming to ya!”

They think that opening up the publishing world so that anyone can get published will produce lots of published garbage? Well, of course it will! But have you checked the bookshelves of the typical bookstore recently? They’re filled with garbage!

They think that allowing eBooks to sell for $2.99 will hurt their ability to sell books for $24.99? Well, of course it will! …And that is a bad thing? Books have always been overpriced, and publishing companies and individual authors who want to control the price of books had better figure out a new way to make money… and quick.

Some complain that the new publishing models will allow anybody to get published. I say, “It’s about time!”

What do you think about the changes currently taking place in the publishing world? Let me know below.

Oh… and do you want to get your book published in 2014? Stay tuned, because within the next two weeks I will tell you how… Hint: I am going to give you King Arthur’s sword…

How to Get Your Book Published

If you subscribe to this blog through my email newsletter, you may have noticed that I am a bit past due on sending out my next free eBook. This is because I have been working hard to get something started to help you get your book published.

I am setting up a way to help you get your book published, but the process is taking much longer than I originally anticipated. So far, I have been working on this project for about a year.

Get Your Book Published

One small part to this project is the next free eBook I will be sending out. It is titled Book Publishing Instructions. Here is the cover:

Get Your Book Published

I am near to being done with this book, but more importantly, am almost ready to launch the related project of actually helping you get your book published.

So if you are an author who wants to get your book published, or if you know an author who wants to get their book published, then keep your subscription to the email newsletter active. If you haven’t yet subscribed to the free Till He Comes email newsletter, what are you waiting for?!

You can subscribe from the subscription widget on the right, or from my Subscribe page.

Get Your Name on this Book Cover

As I near publication of this book (which will be available as a paperback and an eBook) I want to give you the opportunity to get your name on the front cover.

See that green bar at the top of the book cover? If you inspect it carefully, right now all it says is:

Book endorsement here. Second line of book endorsement. -Book Endorsement Author and Blogger

That’s not much of an endorsement, right? That’s because I want to give YOU the opportunity to write an endorsement for that section.

I know you haven’t read this book yet, but if you have read some of my other books and want to write a line or two about these books and how they looked, I will include several of these endorsements on the inside of this book, and randomly pick one of them to go on the front cover.

Here is how to submit an endorsement:

  1. Tweet and Share the message below.
  2. Leave a comment on this post with a short endorsement of the look, feel, and quality of some of the previous books I have published. Make sure you include a little blurb about yourself, including your blog (if you have one) and any books you may have published.

That’s it!

Here is the message you can Tweet and Share on Facebook:

Get #PublishingInstructions from @jeremyers1 when he sends out his next free eBook. Learn more here:

Book Publishing Instructions Preview

Just to give you a little heads up about this book, it is designed to provide step-by-step instructions to help you get your book published.

Book Publishing InstructionsOriginally, I wrote this guide for myself, so that I would remember all the steps involved to taking my book manuscripts from a Word documents, all the way through editing, typesetting, and design, to the ultimate goal of putting the books on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Apple iBooks.

Now I am making this guide to getting published available to you.

This book not only provides instructions on how to get your book published, but also provides screenshots from my computer and websites and tools which I have found helpful in my own process of getting my books published.

Note that this book is not a guide on how to get your book published by traditional book publishers. Instead, it is a guide on how to publish your book yourself. I also explain why self-publishing is a good route to follow for new and aspiring authors.

So if you want to get your book published, you will want to get a copy of this book.

Please note that the free eBook will be a one-time offer! After I send it out to email newsletter subscribers, the book will still be available, but by purchase only. So make sure you have subscribed to my free email newsletter, and that you keep your subscription active.

Also, invite any others you think might benefit from books like the ones I send out every few months. Thanks!
