The Publishing Gatekeepers are Defeated

The Publishing Gatekeepers are Defeated

I have been hearing lots of complaints recently from traditional publishers, authors, and agents that some of the changes in the publishing world are ruining books forever. Their rants go something like this:

Now that everybody can publish a book, there’s going to be so much garbage out there! And it’s all so cheap! How can I charge $24.99 for a book if someone else is selling theirs for $2.99?!! How can I make a living?! We must stop all the independent publishers! We must tell the independent authors that their books are no good unless they get published through traditional publishing methods! We must tell the wannabe authors their ideas are no good! We must force Google, Amazon, and Apple to pay us more money!

I say that the eBook revolution will do for book publishing what the Gutenberg press did for book printing. And the sooner we embrace it, the better off we’ll be.ย There is publishing evolution going on, and those who fight it will become extinct.

ebook publishing evolution

The publishingย gatekeepers with their secret handshakes and lofty glares remind me of the black knight in “Monty Python and the Holy Grail.” In case you haven’t seen it, here’s the video.

King Arthur represents the legion of authors who have tried to get published through traditional means for scores of years, only to be told “None shall pass!” The King even invited the Black Knight to join his quest, but the Knight refused. When King Arthur tried to pass by without a quarrel, the Knight blocked his way. So they battle.

As the battle progresses, the Black Knight loses both arms and both legs, and through it all, he still thinks he is going to win. Even as King Arthur and “Patsy” trot off (yes, with their coconuts… if you don’t understand, you have to watch the whole movie), the Black Knight screams after them, “Come back here! … I’ll bite your legs off!”ย Even after King Arthur cuts the Black Knight’s arms and legs off, the Black Knight still thinks he controls the bridge.

ebook publishingThis is the situation in the current publishing world. The gatekeepers think they still control the bridge, but Amazon, Google, Apple and a legion of self-published authors and independent publishers have hacked off the legs and arms of the traditional publishing methods. ย As we trot off into the publishing sunset, they yell after us, “Come back here! I didn’t give you permission to get published! You yellow bastards! Come back here and take what’s coming to ya!”

They think that opening up the publishing world so that anyone can get published will produce lots of published garbage? Well, of course it will! But have you checked the bookshelves of the typical bookstore recently? They’re filled with garbage!

They think that allowing eBooks to sell for $2.99 will hurt their ability to sell books for $24.99? Well, of course it will! …And that is a bad thing? Books have always been overpriced, and publishing companies and individual authors who want to control the price of books had better figure out a new way to make money… and quick.

Some complain that the new publishing models will allow anybody to get published. I say, “It’s about time!”

What do you think about the changes currently taking place in the publishing world? Let me know below.ย

Oh… and do you want to get your book published in 2014? Stay tuned, because within the next two weeks I will tell you how… Hint: I am going to give you King Arthur’s sword…

How to Get Your Book Published

If you subscribe to this blog through my email newsletter, you may have noticed that I am a bit past due on sending out my next free eBook. This is because I have been working hard to get something started to help you get your book published.

I am setting up a way to help you get your book published, but the process is taking much longer than I originally anticipated. So far, I have been working on this project for about a year.

Get Your Book Published

One small part to this project is the next free eBook I will be sending out. It is titledย Book Publishing Instructions. Here is the cover:

Get Your Book Published

I am near to being done with this book, but more importantly, am almost ready to launch the related project of actually helping you get your book published.

So if you are an author who wants to get your book published, or if you know an author who wants to get their book published, then keep your subscription to the email newsletter active.ย If you haven’t yet subscribed to the free Till He Comes email newsletter, what are you waiting for?!

You can subscribe from the subscription widget on the right, or from my Subscribe page.

Get Your Name on this Book Cover

As I near publication of this book (which will be available as a paperback and an eBook) I want to give you the opportunity to get your name on the front cover.

See that green bar at the top of the book cover? If you inspect it carefully, right now all it says is:

Book endorsement here. Second line of book endorsement. -Book Endorsement Author and Blogger

That’s not much of an endorsement, right? That’s because I want to give YOU the opportunity to write an endorsement for that section.

I know you haven’t read this book yet, but if you have read some of my other books and want to write a line or two about these books and how they looked, I will include several of these endorsements on the inside of this book, and randomly pick one of them to go on the front cover.

Here is how to submit an endorsement:

  1. Tweet and Share the message below.
  2. Leave a comment on this post with a short endorsement of the look, feel, and quality of some of the previous books I have published. Make sure you include a little blurb about yourself, including your blog (if you have one) and any books you may have published.

That’s it!

Here is the message you can Tweet and Share on Facebook:

Book Publishing Instructions Preview

Just to give you a little heads up about this book, it is designed to provide step-by-step instructions to help you get your book published.

Book Publishing InstructionsOriginally, I wrote this guide for myself, so that I would remember all the steps involved to taking my book manuscripts from a Word documents, all the way through editing, typesetting, and design, to the ultimate goal of putting the books on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Apple iBooks.

Now I am making this guide to getting published available to you.

This book not only provides instructions on how to get your book published, but also provides screenshots from my computer and websites and tools which I have found helpful in my own process of getting my books published.

Note that this book is not a guide on how to get your book published by traditional book publishers. Instead, it is a guide on how to publish your book yourself. I also explain why self-publishing is a good route to follow for new and aspiring authors.

So if you want to get your book published, you will want to get a copy of this book.

Please note that the free eBook will be a one-time offer!ย After I send it out to email newsletter subscribers, the book will still be available, but by purchase only. So make sure you have subscribed to my free email newsletter, and that you keep your subscription active.

Also, invite any others you think might benefit from books like the ones I send out every few months. Thanks!

Book Projects Update

Book Projects Update

book writingNo, I haven’t forgotten about my various books projects.

In case you are wondering, here is my progress on some of the books I am currently working on:

Close Your Church for Good

I am finished writing the book. It just needs to get published.

Sadly, I am a few years away from getting the whole thing out… It turned out to be over 100,000 words, and so the editing and typesetting process is taking me much longer than anticipated. Besides, a lot of the material needs to be reworked and reworded, and some of the points need to be explained and defended in better (or more gracious) ways.

Commentary on Jonah

I am half-way through writing my Commentary on Jonah. I am almost all the way through chapter two, and am thrilled at some of the things I am discovering. However, it looks like this will be a big volume also. I am sitting at about 50,000 words on this book already as well, and I am only half way through…

The reason I stopped is because I encountered several issues in the book which I thought deserved more attention and study… and one of them turned into a brand new book project….

When God Pled Guilty

This is my current project at the top of my writing pile. It is the reason I took a break from the Commentary on Jonah. Some of the issues in Jonah areย the reason I started studying the violent portrayals of God in Scripture in the first place, and why I am going to have to revise some of what I have already written in the commentary. I needed a better explanation for the storm that came upon the sailors and the message that Job preaches to Nineveh than the explanation I was given in Bible college and seminary.

So once I am done withย When God Pled Guilty, I will (hopefully) finish the Commentary on Jonah. Although, now that I say this…. there is a five-volume project I have wanted to tackle for about ten years now, and have recently felt my mind being pulled in that direction… Aargh!

Other Book Projects

Aside from these three book projects, I have four or five other manuscripts in various stages of development.ย Sigh.ย So much to write…

I never understand when some writers talk about writer’s block!ย My only writer’s block is that my entire life is too short a block of time to write everything I want.

Along with these books projects of my own, I did finally get things going on my publishing company,ย Redeeming Press. We currently have two authors we are working with to get their books out, and I am in conversations with half a dozen more. I love the idea of helping people get published, but at the same time, it keeps me from doing my own writing and publishing. Oh well, I knew that was part of the cost…

Anyway, some people have been asking, so I decided to give an update on the blog. And remember, I give away all my newly-released books for free to newsletter subscribers. So if you haven’t subscribed, do so today if you want to get free eBooks, and please, tell your friends and family about my newsletter as well so that they can get the free eBooks when they come out.

What is Prayer?

By Jeremy Myers
30 Comments

What is Prayer?

what is prayerA reader recently sent in this question:

What is a prayer?

Now that is a concise question! Ha! Of course, it cannot be answered so concisely…but I will try.

What is prayer?

what is prayer
Why do we think this is what prayer looks like?

We can always begin by defining prayer according to the standard English, Greek, and Hebrew dictionaries, but I think that the person who asks “What is prayer?” is not so much looking for the dictionary definition of prayer, but rather, how to pray, and how to see answers to prayer.

So in trying to answer the question, “What is prayer?” I think the simplest and most practical answer is best.

You see, most people learn about prayer by listening to others pray, and this often leads to some very bad prayer habits and practices. Most people, when they pray, seem to think that prayer requires a spiritual tone of voice, a new set of words, a sing-songy cadence and rhythm, and maybe even the repetition of certain words or phrases.

So it is not uncommon to hear people pray this way::

Father God in heaven, holy art thou above all things, and thy name, Father God, is worthy to be praised, Father God. ย Hallelujah! Praise Jeeeezus! Can I hear an Amen?

Oh, Father God, Lord God, Holy Jesus, we come before you today, as your children, Father God, to beseech you with our many needs, Father God. But before we do so, oh Holy Father in Heaven, we ask thee to forgive us for our many sins. We have failed thee in so many ways, Father God, so that as the prophet Isaiah says, all our righteous works are as filthy rags before thee, Father God! And so we thank thee for sending thy holy Son, Jesus Christ, the Lord of the universe and the master of all, the Lamb who was slain before the foundation of the world, to die for our sins on that wretched cross, oh holy Father God, – Hallalejujah! – praise Jesus – so that we might be forgiven of our many trespasses against you, Father God…

And the prayer goes on this way for many minutes. What is prayer? Not this. The person doing the praying will often work himself up into a bit of a frenzy, until he is shouting and shaking, and people who are listening are nodding their heads, shouting “AMEN!” “HALLELUJAH!” “PRAISE JESUS!” and so on.

This may not be your practice in praying, but it is a common practice and illustrates that when it comes to the question of “What is prayer?” we often learn what prayer is not by thinking about prayer or learning from Scripture what prayer is, but rather learning by watching and listening to others pray, and frankly, we learn some very bad practices this way.

What is prayer?Even if you do not pray the way I have written above, listen to yourself prayย sometime, and ask yourself, “Where did I learn how to pray this way?” Why am I saying these certain words? Why am I changing my voice? Why am I bowing my head and folding my hands? Why am I closing my eyes? Why do I pray to Jesus, or to the Holy Spirit? Why do I repeat this certain phrase over and over, or use those certain words?

So when it comes to asking, “What is prayer?” I like to tell people that prayer is nothing more than talking to God as you would talk to a spouse or a friend. Of course, although I have said it is “nothing more” than that, prayer is certainly nothing less! Think about it! The fact that we can talk to God as a man would talk to a friend! There is no idea more shocking, more amazing!

People are often jealous that Moses spoke to God as a man speaks to a friend, but the fact of the matter is that Jesus has enabled all people to speak to God in this way! We do not need a priestly mediator, or special words, or a holy language, or a spiritual frenzy in order for God to pay attention to us. All of that is religious prayer, which is not the kind of prayer God wants.

I think sometimes God sighs at our religious prayers. He rolls his eyes as we go on and on and on.

He is always paying attention to us, and is with us throughout the day, going where we go, doing what we do, and hanging out with us as we eat, as we work, as we drive. This means that we can talk to him as a man speaks to a friend.

What is prayer? It is simply telling God what is going on and keeping him the in the loop on your life. Are you angry? Tell God. Are you sad? Let him know! Did you just sin? Yeah, he saw it, and he is not mad about it, but he does want to talk to you about it. Did you see something beautiful or experience something joyful? Thanks him! Are there needs and concerns? Ask him for advice or help.

What is prayer? It is simply talking to God in a normal way, just as we talk to anybody else.

What this means it that if you are asking “What is prayer?” you don’t really need to read books on prayer. You don’t need to be taught how to pray. You don’t need to attend prayer training seminars. You don’t need to learn a prayer language. You don’t need to memorize lots of Scripture in order to pray. If you know how to talk, you can pray! Just imagine God sitting next to you, and talk to him as you would talk to anyone else!

Do you want to pray like never before?

Do you what to talk to God like you talk to a friend? Do you want to see more answers to prayer?

If you have these (and other) questions about prayer, let me send you some teaching and instruction about prayer to your email inbox. You will receive one or two per week, absolutely free. Fill out the form below to get started.
