A New Podcast by Brandon Chase! I am loving it!

A New Podcast by Brandon Chase! I am loving it!

theology podcastsI have a 25 minute commute to work. Sometimes I listen to Conservative Talk Radio, but when I am looking for something with a little less doom and gloom, I listen to Podcasts.

Two Podcasts I almost never miss an episode of are the (1) The God Journey by Wayne Jacobsen, and (2) Beyond the Box by Raborn Johnson and Steve Sensenig.

A blogging friend of mine, Brandon Chase, recently started his own podcast. I listened to the first two episodes last week. All I can is WOW.  If you like listening to Podcasts about theological topics like the things we discuss here on this blog, I highly recommend Brandon’s “Real Life Radio” podcast. Keep it up, Brandon!

Click any of the links above to subscribe to their Podcasts through iTunes.

Brandon’s first two episodes were a discussion with Jamal Jivanjee. They discussed many of the things I have been writing about on this blog during the past couple years (prior to the current Calvinism series). They say some quite controversial things about Scripture, God, and the church. What a challenging discussion! In fact, I think that Jamal got himself in a bit of trouble by some of the things they discussed… listen to the two Podcasts and then go read his blog to find out why… You should also read Brandon’s blog.

If you subscribe to any of these podcasts, let me know what you think!

As a bonus, I often enjoy listening to The Free Believers Network Podcast as well. The discussion from 7/27/2014 called “Heaven is for NOW” was fantastic.

The NEW Finding Church

The NEW Finding Church

One of the first books I published was a book called Finding Church.

Can I be honest? I wasn’t very fond of that book…

Finding ChurchSo I was thrilled to learn that Wayne Jacobsen, one of my favorite authors (you must read his book So You Don’t Want to Go to Church Anymore) and podcasters (check out his podcast, “The God Journey“), was putting out a book by the very same title.

Finding Church, by Wayne Jacobsen

His book, due out in October, is also called Finding Church, but his book will be MUCH better than mine.

In fact, Wayne Jacobsen was kind enough to send me an advance copy of Finding Church, and let me tell you, it is as good as I expected.

The last line alone is worth the price of the book.

I’m not going to tell you what that last sentence of Finding Church is, but it has taken me more than 10 years to discover this truth (and I’m still learning it). Wayne’s writings and podcast we influential in helping me learn that truth.

One of the things I appreciate most about Finding Church is that Wayne writes in a gracious way what I have been trying to explain for years to various Christians who think I have abandoned God because I no longer “attend church.”

Wayne JacobsenSome people seem to equate Christianity with attending “church.” They seem to believe if you are truly a Christian, or at least, if you are an obedient Christian, you will attend a “church” on Sunday morning. They seem to think that people like me, who no longer make “church” attendance as part of their weekly routine, have fallen away from God, abandoned the faith, or have given up on following Jesus.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

In fact, for people like me, no longer attending “church” has allowed me to follow Jesus in ways I had only dreamed of when I did attend “church” and experience the love of Jesus in ways I never thought possible.

For me, and millions more like me, the decision to no longer attend “church” was not the result of a failure to follow Jesus, but precisely because I was. It is my belief that Jesus led me away from attending “church” so that I could actually see the Church for the first time, and learn to be the Church in my neighborhood and community.

Obviously, these sorts of statements raise a lot of questions. Wayne’s book Finding Church is one of the best books I know of which answers some of these questions, and, more importantly, provides direction, encouragement, and guidance for those who think that Jesus may be inviting them to leave the four walls of institutional Christianity and follow Jesus into a deeper, more adventuresome, intimate, and real way of living.

In a gracious and loving style, Wayne Jacobsen provides encouragement, hope, and direction to all who have known that there must be something more to this thing we call Church, but have almost despaired of ever finding it.

Are you searching for Church?

If you have been looking for a new church, have been thinking of trying to start a new church, or have been have been wondering about how to be the church, make sure you read Finding Church first.

But be warned! This book doesn’t contain “the answer” you are looking for. There are no “how to” lists or “10 steps” to finding church. The book will, however, open your eyes to see that the Church has been sitting in front of you all along.

Finding Church is currently available for preorder from Amazon, or from Wayne’s own website, Lifestream.org. Go order a copy today!

Are House Churches Weird?

Are House Churches Weird?

I am facing a house church dilemma. Maybe some of you can help me.

weird house church

I have visited some house churches that were …. well… not normal. They were kind of weird. Have you?

I don’t really know how to describe it, and I don’t want to sound harsh or condescending, but I felt quite uncomfortable at these meetings.

They seemed a bit… cultish.

My House Church Experience

I would have felt very uncomfortable inviting any of my non-Christian friends to such a meeting. Also, a few of the people were somewhat socially inept. I got the distinct feeling that the primary reason some of them were in a house church was because they would not be able to function properly with people in more traditional churches.

Has anyone else ever felt this way, or is it just me?

Am I being too judgmental? Am I the one that has the problem? Is this just my critical spirit getting in the way?

Are House Churches just Small “Regular” Churches?

Frankly, it seems that most house church groups were not even doing much of anything different from a traditional church, except on a much smaller scale. Five or ten people gather on Sunday mornings at about 10:00 am, sit in chairs, sing a few songs, spend some in prayer, and then have a Bible discussion, which more often than not, is dominated by one person.

This is really not that different from what takes place in any other church. It was just smaller.

Oh, and there was no paid pastor.

But really, is that what the house church movement is all about? I hope not.

There has got to be more to organic church, missional church, and house church than being a mini-church. I have some ideas on what church can look like, but I haven’t had the courage yet to try it. I think I’m going to give it a shot…

2013 Update: This post was originally written in 2011 on a different website. Since that time, I have embarked on my church “experiment” and have found more love, encouragement, fellowship, and relational warmth than almost any previous “church” experience. To keep updated on some of what I am thinking, doing, and experiencing in my “church” journey with Jesus, subscribe to my email newsletter, in which I send out personal updates and free eBooks.

Also, one book my wife and I read this past year which sounded eerily familiar to what we have personally experienced, was the fictional “novel” by Wayne Jacobsen and Dave Coleman, So You Don’t Want to Go to Church Anymore. Wayne is coming out with a book soon called Finding Church, which I hope will be encouraging and helpful as well.
