Imagining the Gospel

Imagining the Gospel
Will RochowThis is a guest post by Will Rochow. He is a Bible School and Seminary graduate who served in three churches before following God away from the institutional church. However, he is more “in the ministry” today than ever before. Will is also an avid motorcycle enthusiast, and actively writes atย Rethinking Faith and Church. You can also connect with Will on Twitter and Facebook.

Imagine there’s no heaven
It’s easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people living for today

So began the classic song โ€œImagineโ€ by John Lennon. As a former Beatles fan, and more specifically, a John Lennon fan, I used to love that song. I remember a time before the Lord grabbed ahold of me that I actually said that I wanted that song at my funeral one day. Itโ€™s interesting how oneโ€™s perspective changes upon meeting Jesus. Today, thatโ€™s probably the last song Iโ€™d want at my memorial.

Over this past Christmas season, my son loaned me a rather controversial book. I wonโ€™t mention the name of the book here, but suffice it to say that the author, a prominent church leader, had some pretty bizarre views of heaven, and more specifically, of hell. I wondered if perhaps the author of that book was an โ€œImagineโ€ fan too. At the very least, he seemed to have quite an imagination.

To the best of my knowledge, John Lennon never professed a faith in Jesus Christ before being assassinated. However, God Himself will be the judge of that. Still, I cannot help but wonder how many other ways we sometimes โ€œImagineโ€ the things of God to be. Could there really be some Christians out there somewhere who also โ€œImagine thereโ€™s no heavenโ€ and who are equally convinced that there in also โ€œno hell below us?โ€ How many other ways arenโ€™t we also perhaps imagining God to be that doesnโ€™t line up with proper hermeneutics? Sometimes it all seems to me a bit like weโ€™ve created some new kind of gospel.

Counterfeit Gospel

A Different Gospel

The Apostle Paul wondered about the same sort of thing when he said, โ€œI am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel โ€“ which is really no gospel at allโ€ (Galatians 1:6,7; NIV). Wow, I guess some things never change.

People’s Greatest Need is Salvation

By Jeremy Myers

People’s Greatest Need is Salvation

Though I used to preach and teach it, I am not a big fan of the idea that “People’s greatest need is salvation.” Often, churches, pastors, and ministries which say this are just trying to justify their lack of involvement with loving and serving others. We seem to think that if we can fix their eternal problem, then no matter how bad life is, everything will be okay.

But I don’t think this is the true Gospel message.

Humanity's greatest need

Far too often, Christians put off until eternity what should be done today. We see people in pain, suffering, and oppression crying out for help, and our normal response is, โ€œBelieve in Jesus for eternal life. Then, when you die, everything will be okay. God will wipe away your tears, right the wrongs, and judge those who are hurting you. Wonโ€™t that be grand?โ€

And when they reject our gracious offer because we have nothing to offer them here and now for their suffering on earth, we consign them to eternal suffering in hell for their rejection of Jesus. When we refuse to help others with their physical needs because their greatest need is eternal life, the โ€œGood Newsโ€ message that many people hear is, โ€œYour suffering in this life at the hands of wicked men will be followed by suffering in eternity at the hands of a loving God.โ€

Is it any wonder that people reject the โ€œGood Newsโ€ when there seems to be nothing good about it?

Meeting Needs vs. Loving People

Meeting Needs vs. Loving People

Meeting Needs Loving People

Meeting the needs of other people (whether the needs are physical or spiritual) comes with an inherent danger.

We can become so focused on the needs of people, that we neglect the people themselves. The needs become more important than the people. The need becomes a substitute for getting to know people who are dealing with those issues and needs. So sometimes, we need to forget the issues and forget the needs, and just focus on people. We need to stop categorizing and classifying people by their needs, and just love and serve them as people.

The Man with the Withered Hand

There is an account in the Gospel of Luke when Jesus encounters a man with a withered hand. Such a deformity would have kept this man from performing most kinds of work, and such a blemish may also have restricted his ability to bring sacrifices to God and participate with fellow Jews in the worship of God. This man was physically and spiritually outcast. Not only this, but the day on which Jesus met him was a Sabbath. So the situation is overflowing with numerous physical and spiritual needs, and complex theological issues.

But Jesus raised none of the issues, asked none of the theological questions, and focused on none of the needs. Jesus did not write a letter to the editor, make a plan to help others with similar problems, start a task force, raise support, begin a non-profit organization to raise awareness for people with withered hands, address the cultural, sociological, and theological errors which had created the problem, or any of the other things He could have done. Instead, Jesus just helped the man. Jesus knew the man needed help and so Jesus helped him.

Love People, Not Needs

When a person with a need or issue is in front of us, our focus should be on that person, and not on the need or issue which that person represents. There will be plenty of time later to raise awareness for the plight of others facing the same need. But the time for that is not when someone is standing right in front of us with that need. That is the time to toss all the plans, and fundraising, and support letters out the window, and just say, โ€œHere, let me help.โ€

Meeting Physical Needs to Get at the Spiritual

Meeting Physical Needs to Get at the Spiritual

Needs Based Evangelism

Among churches that focus on both the physical and spiritual elements of the gospel, there are still two subtle but serious mistakes that are often made. These two mistakes are only found in churches that are trying to meet both physical needs and spiritual needs, and in recent years, both of these types of churches are much more common than either of the extreme churches above.

We will look at one mistake today, and the second tomorrow.

Needs a Doorway to “True” Evangelism

The first mistake is when we think that meeting a physical need is just preliminary to meeting the spiritual need.

These churches believe that meeting the spiritual need is of primary importance, and meeting the spiritual need is simply a means to an end. Meeting physical needs is almost seen as a necessary evil. In this view, meeting physical needs are a waste of time and money unless they help the church accomplish its real goal of saving peopleโ€™s souls. In this view, meeting peopleโ€™s physical needs is not really part of the Gospel, but is simply a way to gain a hearing for the Gospel. For these churches, the Gospel is still just a message about how to receive eternal life, and the free meals, the clothes closet, and community service projects are just ways of gathering an audience and grabbing peopleโ€™s ears.

Churches that function under this mindset usually require the people who show up to receive the free serviceโ€”whether it is free clothes, food, or counselingโ€”to sit through a gospel presentation as the โ€œentrance fee.โ€ You want a free meal? Fine. First listen to this sermon. You want marriage counseling? Great. But letโ€™s first deal with your broken relationship with God. You want a free coat for the winter? We can give you one, but let me first go through this tract with you about how to get clothed with the righteousness of God. You want your car washed for free? We can do that. But while you wait, let me tell you how you can be washed from all your sin.

Is Need-based Evangelism Needed?

By Jeremy Myers

Is Need-based Evangelism Needed?

Need based evangelism

When it comes to need-based evangelism, we have two extremes.

Meeting Physical Needs Only

On the one side, we have the people who focus only on meeting peopleโ€™s physical needs. These are the social-gospel churches, which focus on need-based evangelism. They say things like, โ€œPeople donโ€™t care how much you know until they know how much you careโ€ or โ€œAn empty stomach has no ears.โ€ I would not argue with these proverbs, as they are true. But I would add a proverb of my own: โ€œDonโ€™t let busy hands tie your tongue.โ€ Sometimes these churches get so busy loving and helping people that they never get around to telling others the truth about God, sin, Jesus Christ, and eternal life.

Meeting Spiritual Needs Only

The other church extreme criticizes such efforts as a waste of time and resources. What good is it, they ask, for people to go to hell with nice clothes and a full stomach? They argue that a personโ€™s eternal destiny is more important than any earthly comfort. These churches say things like, โ€œItโ€™s our job to preach; itโ€™s Godโ€™s job to saveโ€ and โ€œPeople are destroyed from lack of knowledge, not from lack of foodโ€ (alluding from Hosea 4:6). There is truth in these sayings as well.

The Balance of the Gospel

But both sides, with their proverbs and passionate appeals, have missed the overarching message of the gospel, that it is good news for both the body and the spirit. For both temporal and eternal life. The gospel is not just about life here and now, nor is it about life in the hereafter. It is about both. The gospel is the full-orbed message about the claims of Jesus on both our present and eternal life. To focus on one life or the other is a serious mistake.

Back Burner Ministry

Back Burner Ministry

Back Burner MinistryI am a Guest blogger over at Will Rochow’s blog today, Rethinking Faith and Church.

The post is called “Back Burner Ministry” and starts with this:

Most followers of Jesus eventually feel like they have been “put on the back burner.” I suspect Moses felt like this while he was tending sheep for 40 years in the desert. Most of the prophets felt this way when they did their best to speak the Word of God, and only got mocked, jeered, and imprisoned in return. I’m pretty sure Saul (Paul) felt this way also after his conversion when he spent 14 years in Tarsus.

Maybe you are in a similar situation. You are in the boondocks. In the sticks. You feel like you are a nobody.

Head on over there to read the rest of the post!

Oh, and here are the guidelines if anybody wants to write guest posts for my blog.

The End is Nigh

By Jeremy Myers

The End is Nigh

When I was a pastor, I used to preach an annual sermon on the first Sunday of every year in which I recounted all the tragedies and horrors of the previous year, and concluded by saying, “See? All these things prove that the end of the world is near!”

The basic idea was to get people to recommit, to double up in their efforts at faithful attendance and daily Bible study, and to make sure they were “keeping watch” for the return of the bridegroom, so that they were not left out in the dark when He returned.

I would often focus on texts like Matthew 24:6-7 which talks about wars and rumors of wars, and famines and earthquakes as being signs of the end. So we better get ready! The End of the World is Nigh!

The End is Nigh 2012

I imagine there are lots of such sermons being preached today. 2011 was a great year for dire predictions. And December 21, 2012 already promises to raise more fear and fervor than January 1, 2000 (Y2K), June 6, 2006 (666), July 7. 2007 (777), or May 21 and October 21, 2011 (Harold Camping’s debacle).

Can I issue a call for sanity right now? Please?

4000 Books 2012

books

This post simply contains a list of books I read in 2012, with short reviews for each book.

My goal is to average one book per week. At this rate, a person can only read about 4000 books in their lifetime. I own way more than this number of books already, which is depressing for me to think about! I already own more books than I can read! It certainly makes me choose wisely which books I spend time reading!

Here is my count so far:

  • Initial Estimate:  1500
  • 4000 Books 2010: 45
  • 4000 Books 2011:  69
  • 4000 Books 2012: 52 – See Comments Below
  • 4000 Books 2013: 57
  • 4000 Books 2014: ??
  • Total so Far:   1723

I welcome review books

Though I am very careful about which books I read, I am always open to reviewing books. If you send me a copy of your book, I will usually read it within one month, and will post reviews in a regular blog post, on Amazon, and as a comment below. If you have a book you would like me to review, contact me through the contact form on my About page.

I like to blog about books with other bloggers

Another thing I like to do is read and blog about books with other bloggers. Check out the short list of some of the books I plan to read this coming year. If you see one or two you want to read along with me, or if you have a different suggestion, contact me through the contact form on my About page.

Best Books of 2011

Books I read in 2011

I read 69 books in 2011.

Here are my 5 favorite:

Simply Jesus by NT Wright1.ย Simply Jesusย by N. T. Wright

This book may simply be the best book about Jesus I have ever read (Yes, yes. Apart from the Bible. Does it really need to be said?)

But the book is not just about Jesus. It is about the church, the Gospel, the Kingdom of God, Israel, history, government, social involvement, eschatology, and a mind-numbing array of other topics, all of which swirl around and center upon the person and work of Jesus Christ. Read the full review here.

Till We Have Faces by CS Lewis2.ย Till We Have Facesย by CS Lewis

Though I love The Chronicles of Narnia, this is my favorite novel by C. S. Lewis.

He wrote that it was his favorite as well, though when the book came out, it was not well received by the public, and never gained much notoriety. Even today, few people even know that he wrote the book. Learn more about the story, and read my full review here.

Walter Wink Powers Trilogy3.ย ย Engaging the Powersย by Walter Wink

This is the third book is a three part series which addresses the biblical, theological, and practical issue of Satan, demons, the demonic, and the world of spiritual powers.

Of the three books, this one is the the most practical, though the other two lay the biblical and theological groundwork for the ideas in this book. Unless you read the first two, the ideas of this book may sound outlandish, unsupported, and even extreme. Read the full review of this book here.

The King Jesus Gospel by Scot McKnight4.ย ย The King Jesus Gospelย by Scot McKnight.

Scot McKnight is concerned that that most evangelicals have a very narrow and unbiblical understanding of the Gospel.

Most of us, he believes, hold to something which he calls โ€œaย soterianย Gospelโ€ which is the idea that the Gospel message primarily concerns me and my salvation. Read the full review here.

Finding Organic Church by Frank Viola5.ย Finding Organic Churchย byย Frank Viola

This book is a good guide to help people find or develop a community of like-minded people with whom they can live and worship.ย While I havenโ€™t read everything on the subject, I know of no other book like it on the market, and it really helped answer some of my own questions and provide me some direction as I seek to follow Jesus by loving and serving others in my community. The book provided a fairly clear picture of Violaโ€™s experience with the organic church and the Scriptural basis for this model.ย Read the full review here.

Best Blogs of 2011

I want to personally thank all of you for such a great 2011! This blog and website has been in existence for over 10 years, but it was only this year that I decided to start taking it seriously.

Last January, I was averaging about 50 visits per day. This December, I averaged over 1400 daily visits. That’s a 2800% increase! While I could chalk this up to learning a lot about blogging (which I did), or learning a lot about theology and Scripture (some of which is documented on this blog), most of this increase is due to you – my friends and fellow blogger/writers in the online community.

Thank you all for being a part of the Till He Comes blog. I am looking forward to what we all learn together in 2012.

Here are some highlights from this past year:

The top ten blog posts of 2011:
