A Tale of Two Authors

A Tale of Two Authors

two authorsAre you an author, blogger, or podcaster? Can I provide a tiny bit of advice?

Let me do so by telling you about two authors…

Author #1

An author recently emailed me about reviewing his book. This is a summary of how our email exchange went:

Author: Hey! I love your blog. I just wrote a book, and I think your audience would love to read it. Would you buy a copy on Amazon, then review it on your blog? I would really appreciate it. The book is about how Christians should obey everything their pastor says.

Me: Ummm… First of all, do I know you? Second, how long have you been reading my blog? If it’s been for more than a month, you might have realized that the topic of your book would be the exact opposite of what my blog readers would want to read.

Author: I only read your most recent blog post, and I thought it was great. I’m an author and I want people to buy my book. You have a popular blog, so I want you to read and review my book. I think if you read it, you will see what the Bible clearly teaches about submitting to those in authority, and then you will be able to recommend it to your readers, and they will see the truth also.

Me: Tell you what … I will buy, read, and review your book if you buy, read, and review one of mine. Deal?

Author: Nah … I don’t have time for that.

I never heard from that author again, but I sometimes wonder how his book is doing …

Author #2

Then there is the second author, Richard Jacobson. He recently published a fantastic book called (#AmazonAdLink) Unchurching. I was pleased to write an endorsement for the book, and am thrilled to review it here on my blog, on Amazon, and interview him for my Theology.fm podcast (coming soon!).

And why am I happy to do what I can to promote Richard Jacobson’s book? Well, not only because I love what he wrote in his book, but also because he and I have developed a bit of an online friendship. He has been retweeting my posts for a year or more, occasionally comments here on this blog, and interacts with my posts on Facebook. In turn, I try to do the same for him.

And so because I knew him from online, and because I liked the videos and cartoons he publishes, I was thrilled to endorse his book when he asked and do what I can to promote it. It appears that John Zens, Felicity Dale, and Keith Giles feel similarly. They also endorsed his book.

And guess what? When Richard’s book came out, it debuted at #1 in it’s category! That is awesome! (Well done, Richard!)

Here’s the advice for authors, bloggers, and podcasters:

If you are an author, blogger, podcaster, or some sort of other creative person who wants to get your ideas out in the world, the very first step is to be generous with your time and energy.

be generous with timeOffer to help and serve others before you ever think of asking them to help and serve you. Comment on their posts. Share their books and blogs on Facebook. Interact with them on Twitter. If you know they have a book coming out, offer to proofread it, review it, and tell others about it.

Be helpful. Be generous. Be kind.

Then, much later, when you have book or podcast you want to promote, those people whom you have helped will be much more likely to help you as well.

After all, as “Someone” once said, “Give, and it will be given to you …” (Luke 6:38) and “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” (Luke 6:31).

Help me Title my Next Book!

Help me Title my Next Book!

My next book should be out within the next month or so, but I am really having trouble giving it a title. So I thought you could help!

Oh, and by the way, if you want to get this next book for free, make sure you have signed up to get updates through my email newsletter. That is how I let people know that the free books are available. By way of saying “Thank you,” I will send you “Skeleton Church” just for signing up.

book title

My Next Book Has No Title (yet)

My next book is about two different things.

The first part of the book is about transforming the practice of baptism and the Lord’s supper to something that more accurately reflects the symbolism and significance of these events when they were first done by Jesus.

The second part of the book is about willingly sacrificing our God-given and constitutional rights for the sake of others. It is not uncommon for people (even Christians) to sue others because their “rights” were violated. I often wonder what would happen if, for the sake of the gospel, rather than sue people over our rights, we followed Paul’s advice in 1 Corinthians 6:7: “Why not rather be wronged?”

You might say “What a strange mixture for a book.”

Yes, but when you think about it, they go together quite nicely. Christians get up in arms whenever anybody messes with the “rites” of baptism and the Lord’s Supper, and we get up in arms whenever anybody messes with our legal “rights,” such as the right to free speech, the right to practice our religion, or the right to bear arms.

Do you see where I am going? In our efforts to protect our “rites” and our “rights” we are ruining our witness and destroying the clarity of the gospel. The gospel of Jesus Christ is not about defending our religious rites or our legal rights, but about sacrificing everything for the sake of others.

If you want to read a rough draft of the content of this book, check out the sections on this page: “Close Your Church for Good” about “Giving up Your Rites” and “Giving Up Your Rights.”

What Book Title Do You Suggest?

what is the book titleSo, with all of that in mind, does anybody have any suggestion for a book title? Here is a brainstorm list of my own:

  • Dying to your rights
  • Die to Your Rites/Rights
  • No Rights to your Rites
  • Give up your Rites/Rights
  • The Right Rites
  • Getting our Rites Right
  • Dying to Religion and Empire
  • You have no rights/rites
  • Don’t Fight for your Rights/Rites
  • No Rights to your Rites
  • The Religious Rites
  • You Have the Rite to be Wrong
  • Am I Rite? Am I Right?
  • Brighter Americans: Not Clinging to our Guns and Religion
  • Divine Rites to Unholy Rights
  • The Right to Give Up (Thanks Jim Davey!)

You don’t have to choose from these. Make up your own, and suggest it in the comment section below! Use the share buttons to invite others to give their input.

You are invited to join the Redeeming Press Book Launch Team!

free books on book launch teamDid you know I started a publishing company last year? It’s called Redeeming Press.

Almost TWO years ago I ran a survey through this blog about people’s publishing plans (Go see some of the responses here). Since that time, I have incorporated Redeeming Press with the state of Oregon, and published 5 books through the company (3 of my own, and two from other authors).

I am currently working with 5 authors to get their books into print within the next year. It is all pretty exciting.

There is still A LOT of work to be done, and I am tweaking the processes I use to publish these books, but the time has come to take the next step in my “master plan” for turning the publishing world upside down!

… Well, that’s a bit of an overstatement. I just want to help new and undiscovered authors get their books into print.

So here is the next step in the process – and here is how YOU can get involved:

I am seeking a Book Launch Team.

Right now, I am limiting it to only 10 people, so if you want to be part of the ground floor of this publishing model, I invite you to apply right away to become a member of this team. I will take applications for just a short while, and then will select 10 people from those who apply.

  2. A free copy of the paperback upon it’s release. Sometimes these will be signed by the author!
  3. Exclusive access to a private Facebook group, where we’ll share promotion ideas and you’ll have direct contact with the book authors.
  4. The opportunity to interact and network with other authors and launch team members.
  5. The ability to make a commission payment of 3%-15% on every book sale you refer.
  6. A special THANK YOU on the Redeeming Press blog and the Till He Comes blog with a link to your website.
  7. A bunch of other freebies I can’t talk about yet (and which will vary depending on which book is being launched).
  8. First opportunity to join the Redeeming Press affiliate program and make money by recommending the book to your friends and social networks.
  9. First access to future Book Launch Teams.

Publish your Book with Redeeming Press

Publish your Book with Redeeming Press

Get publishedWant to get your book published? Do you have a manuscript and are seeking a publisher, or are thinking of writing a book, but don’t know where to begin?

Let me introduce you to Redeeming Press!

Redeeming Press is publishing the way it was meant to be. It is publishing with generosity and grace. It is publishing that focuses on the author rather than on profits.

Almost exactly one year ago, I decided to start a publishing company.

I saw then, and am even more convinced now, that the publishing industry was rapidly changing, and that most publishing companies in the world were not properly adapting to these changes. In fact, most of the publishing companies were actively fighting against and trying to hinder the changes!

So I started brainstorming about how a publishing company could operate which would take advantage of some of the publishing methods in a way that would:

  1. Allow new and undiscovered authors to get published
  2. Allow books to get into print more quickly
  3. Allow authors to receive a larger royalty payment than normal

After several months of brainstorming, talking with others in the publishing industry, doing hundreds of research on publishing methods, and reading dozens of books about publishing, I ended up with a process for book publishing which accomplished all three of my goals.

Benefits of Redeeming Press

PUblishing at Redeeming PressThrough my brainstorming, I think I found a way to “redeem the press,” that is, to remove some of the negative elements of the publishing industry, and add in some elements and principles of the Kingdom of God, specifically, elements of truth, generosity, and grace.

  1. While most publishing companies want authors who have a big “platform,” Redeeming Press primarily cares about big ideas. If you have a book which presents truth in a fresh way, we might be interested in publishing it.
  2. While most publishing companies take a year or more to get your book into print, we can get your book into print within a few months.
  3. While most publishing companies pay their authors 10% royalties, we created a payment structure that allowed authors to make 30% royalty payments on their book (and even up to 45% in certain circumstances).

Redeeming Press

Redeeming Press Projects

Currently, Redeeming Press is working with three authors, and we are talking with about a dozen more. Updates on who these three authors are and what books they will be publishing will be announced soon over at Redeeming Press.com

If you are an author (or want to be one), I invite you to consider publishing your book with Redeeming Press.

Head on over to Redeeming Press.com to get started.

Oh, and while you are there, sign up for the Redeeming Press newsletter. The newsletter will give you updates about authors, newly published books, and some tips and suggestions for writing and preparing your own book for publication. Besides that, in a week or two, newsletter subscribers will get a shortened and condensed version of my Book Publishing Instructions.

Today is the LAST DAY to download my newest eBook!

Today is the LAST DAY to download my newest eBook!

Book Publishing InstructionsI know I have talked about my newest eBook A LOT this week. Sorry about that.

Actually, no, I am not sorry.

I try not to push my books too much on my blog. I figure that if you like what I write in my blog posts, you are smart enough to buy some of my books if you want to.

I don’t like to pressure anyone into buying my books.

But this week I have put on a lot of pressure. Why? Not because I want you to buy my book, but because I DON’T want you to buy it. I want you to get it for free!

I Don’t Want You to Buy My Book

Seriously, the reason I have written five blog posts this week about my newest eBook is because I don’t want you to have to pay for it.

It has been available on Amazon all week as a free download, but after today, it will never again be free, and I want you to get a free copy before the offer is gone for good.

Download my ebook now for freeEven if you don’t think you would ever read this book, or don’t think you ever want to publish a book of your own, go download it anyway. That way, if you ever decide to publish a book, you will have one to read.

Or if you ever have a family member who wants to get published, or if your pastor at church decides to pursue publishing, you will have a book to let them borrow.

I would hate it if next week your neighbor came over to you and said, “I want to get my book published. Do you know of any good books that can give me some suggestions on how to proceed?” and you had to tell them to go buy my book because you neglected to download it when it was free.

Look, I am not going to lie… I like it when people buy my books. I do. It helps pay the bills and cover all the costs of publishing a book like this.

But I also love to give my books away for free when they first come out. Most authors try to rack up as many book sales as possible during that first week of publication, but I try to give away as many books as possible. I can’t apologize for trying to give my books away.

So go download my book on Amazon right now
Download my ebook now for freeAlso, invite others to do the same using the Twitter, Facebook, and Google+ buttons below. Thanks!

Don’t wait until tomorrow because this free giveaway on Amazon ends tonight, January 3, 2014!

If you want to get future eBooks for free, make sure you sign up for the email newsletter!
