A Church Builds the Tower of Babel

By Jeremy Myers

A Church Builds the Tower of Babel

There is a church in Australia that has decided to build the world’s tallest spire.

I am sure this is exactly what Jesus wants.

Here is an artists rendering of the proposed structure:

church spire tallest

I kind of doubt it will actually look like that, but whatever….

I know I do not agree with a lot of the ways that churches spend money, but is there really any justification of any sort whatsoever to build the world’s tallest church spire?

I mean really…. I complained when First Baptist in Dallas decided to raise $50 million for their building renovations (and then later upped it to $115 million!!!), and the plan by this church in Australia is more of the same. It may look beautiful to men, but I firmly believe that in God’s eyes, it’s a big pile of crap.

I am sure the church is quite generous with their money and is doing a lot of good in their town, but even if they are giving 99% of their income away, and only spending 1% to build this spire, what justification is there to build the world’s tallest church spire?

I just don’t get it.

I know I am not supposed to judge other people and other churches and their use of money, and I am certain there are ways I am spending my own money wastefully, but I just cannot help myself on this. What kind of message does this send to a watching world?

Does it say, “We care about the poor, the homeless, and needy, and weak, the orphans, and widows, the outcast, and the rejected”? Or does it say, “Look at us! We have the world’s tallest church spire!”?

Sigh. I just don’t know what to say sometimes. Am I wrong on this somewhere?

Someone please explain this to me.

How to Understand Women

How to Understand Women

Hey men! Do you want to better understand the women in your life? I finally found a book thatย actually helps!ย Whether you want to understand your wife or your daughter, there is finally a book with some helpful tips and suggestions. This book is going on my “Best Christian Books” list.

I have read a dozen or two books about marriage, but have never found a book this helpful.ย

Daddy DatesAnd the most surprising thing of all is that it was not necessarily written to help men understand women. It was just written to help dads connect with their daughters. But the tips, suggestions, and ideas that the author gives will help us better understand the women that are in our lives.

The book is Daddy Dates by Greg Wright, and it is one of the best books I have ever read on the subject of women. Even if you don’t have daughters, this book will help you understand your wife.

Greg Wright realized one day that he knew next to nothing about his daughters, and so set out to learn as much about them as he could. But he didn’t know where to start. So he decided to start where all of us guys start when we want to get to know a woman – by dating! He starting taking his daughters on dates, and in the process, learned more about his daughters than any man thinks is possible!

This great little book is a quick read, and is full of humor (great for us guys), and is chock-full of ideas of how to date your daughters, what to avoid, topics to discuss, and even has a list to get us started of the “Top 15 Daddy Dates.”

I Hate Church Bullies

I Hate Church Bullies

This is a guest post by Sam Riviera.ย Heย spends most of his time and energy caring for others in his community so that through his life and actions they might see Jesus. He has also written โ€œ14 Reasons I Never Returned to the Institutional Church.โ€œ

If you would like to write a guest post for this blog,ย check out the guidelines here.

church bulliesWhen I was in first grade I told my mother that one of the boys in my class was picking on me. Much to my surprise, my mother taught me how to protect myself. She taught me how to hold one arm in front of me to ward off blows while holding a balled-up fist behind it ready to throw a good punch if someone decided to punch me first.

Only many years later did I learn that no one dared pick on my mother when she was a kid. After mother taught me how to protect myself, no one dared pick on me.

If only it were that easy to respond to church bullies!ย A few well-placed punches and all the church bullies would stop bullying us for fear of suddenly acquiring a flattened nose.

How do we identify a church bully? Why do they bully? How can we best respond to them? (Even though they might deserve a flattened nose, I donโ€™t advocate that response.)

How Do We Identify A Church Bully?

Church bullies usually give themselves away by what they say. Often, they might say things like this:

โ€œA Christian would be at Wednesday night prayer service.โ€ย (I worked evenings.)

โ€œA Christian would go to that Sunday school class.โ€ (It was horrible. Iโ€™d have preferred going to the town dump to shoot rats.)

Santa Clausette

Santa Clausette

believe in the spirit of christmasMy wife is the epitome of Christmas spirit. She is Santa Claus incarnate. She is Santa Clausette. We are near the tail end of a cross-country move from New York to Oregon, and still trying to find doctors and mechanics, grocery stores and gas stations, and she still has somehow found the time to put together the greatest Christmas of all for myself and our three girls.

Almost every day when I come home from work, something else is decorated for Christmas, or another batch of cookies has been made. Also, this year she rescued a stray cat from off the streets, and named it Christmas. She has decorated not just one Christmas tree, but four. Yes, four Christmas trees. She has put up boughs and lights inside and out. And every single day, she reads piles of Christmas stories to our three girls, lighting up their eyes (and hers) with wonder and delight.

This is the spirit of Christmas. She is Santa Clausette.

But beyond all the goodies and decorations, she has exhibited the Christmas spirit in two other tangible ways.

homeless feetAs we have been driving around Oregon, we have noticed many homeless people. They seem to be everywhere. Our friend, Sam, in California likes to give tarps, bottles of water, bags of chips, and socks to homeless people in his town, and when Wendy heard this, she decide to put together Christmas bags for the homeless people in our area. She bought a box of canvas bags, a box of blue tarps, several flats of water bottles, and along with the girls, put together โ€œChristmas care packagesโ€ for the homeless. Each canvas bag gets filled with a tarp, bottles of water, snacks, food, and a candy cane or two.

We carry these bags around in our car, and every time we see a homeless person, we stop and give them one. This has also helped our girls to begin looking for homeless people instead of trying to avoid seeing them. They have also begun to recognize the homeless people as well. The other day we were driving through town and one of our girls said, โ€œThereโ€™s a homeless lady! Letโ€™s give her a gift bag!โ€ But when we got near, one daughter said, โ€œOh, we gave her one last week. But that is okay. We can give her another one.โ€ They recognized her. She was not a faceless person sitting on a corner holding a sign. She was a person in need, whom we could help. And she deserved two bags of goodies.

And my wife, Santa Clausette, thought of doing all this.

candlesThen last week, she found out about a lady near where we live who moved up here from California. She was married to an abusive husband, and was scared that he would start abusing their daughter, and so she took the brave step of moving to a place where she had no home, no job, and no friends. My wife is putting together boxes for this lady and her daughter, and in the coming week, we are going to take it all to her. The boxes are filled with food, candles, cookies, some of our favorite Christmas books, Christmas ornaments, and numerous other items which we hope will help this lady and her daughter have a slightly better Christmas, and to know that there are people around her who love her and want to help care for her.

This is the spirit of Christmas. This is my wife.

Thank you, Wendy, for being Santa Clausette, the spirit of Christmas, for showing the light and love of Jesus to a hurting world by being His hands and His feet.

“The Lie” Made Two Best Seller Lists!!

As I gear up to send out my next free ebook (read on to find out more) I was a little surprised to get onto Amazon today and discover that one of my e-books,ย The Lie, made it on to two Amazon Best Seller lists today.

The Lie Jeremy Myers Amazon.com Kindle Store

The Lie

The Lie by Jeremy MyersThe Lieย is a little book I wrote almost two years ago to experiment with writing ebooks. It was the first ebook I wrote, and the first book I gave away for free on my email newsletter. It is based off of 2 Thessalonians 2:11 which says that in the last days, God will send a powerful delusion so that people will believe the lie. In this book, I try to guess what this lie might be.

In other words, the book is eschatological science fiction.

In the book, I try to imagine what explanation the President of the Untied States would give when millions of people around the world disappear in the rapture.

Tell Me a Story of Christmas

candleI want to invite you to participate in this month’s Synchroblog. It is on the theme of Christmas, and invites you to write a post on your blog about a story that has to do with the spirit of Christmas, the advent of Jesus, and the wonderful spirit of love and generosity that is so prevalent this time of year.

Here is the description from the Synchroblog website:

We find a lot of comfort in the story of Christmas, as we should. Advent is that time each year when we slowly make our way through the journey of that wonderful birth so long ago. Very often we, as the larger community of Christ, consider this season from the perspective of expectant waiting. But Advent is about much, much more โ€ฆ itโ€™s about the harbingers of Jesusโ€™ ministry on earth โ€ฆ hope, and love, and joy, and peace. What are your stories of hope, love, joy and peace? How do you remember them and pass them on to your family or your neighbors? Can you see the shadows of Jesus in them? Since itโ€™s Christmas, wonโ€™t you please tell us all a story about Advent in your everyday life? Share your story on your blog this month. Post your links in the comment section by 6pm on Tuesday December 11th and a link list will be published on Wednesday December 12th.

I try to participate in the Synchroblog every month. It helps me write about topics I have never considered before, it helps me find other bloggers to challenge my thinking, and it also helps other people find this blog to read. If you have a blog, I encourage to participate. The more the merrier!

In Favor of a Marriage Amendment

By Jeremy Myers

In Favor of a Marriage Amendment

Biblical Marriage

As the Supreme Court prepares to hear two cases about same-sex marriage, I wanted to weigh in on the subject of gay marriage and the attempt in many states to add a marriageย amendmentย to their constitution defining marriage as between one man and one woman. Many Christians and conservatives (I consider myself both) want to define marriage “biblically.” That is, based on the Bible’s definition of marriage, they want it to become the law of the land that two men (or two women) cannot be “married.” They want to ban same-sex marriage through the Defense of Marriage Act, or at least not allow such unions to be called “marriage.”

Marriage Amendment

I could be in favor of an amendment to the constitution defining marriage “biblically” IF weย reallyย defined it according to what the Bible says.ย ย If we are going to define marriage biblically, we should go all the way.

So the Bible says that marriage is between one man and one woman. Fine.

But it also says that marriage is between one man and one woman for life.ย So divorce is out. Anyone who has divorced and remarried cannot be defined as “married.”

Also, the marriage bed should be kept pure, so there can be no sexual activity outside of marriage., either before, during, or after marriage. Anyone who slept around before marriage or who had an affair also cannot be defined as “married.”

And depending on how rigorous we want to apply the definition, we might be able to say that anyone who has looked at another person lustfully has already committed adultery with them in their heart, and so they have technically had an affair also, and so they cannot be biblically defined as “married.”

When we take the entire Bible to define marriage (instead of just a few obscure passages, marriage is defined as “The union between a man and a woman for their entire life, with absolutely no sexual activity or thoughts outside of this union forever.”

If we are going to vote in a “biblical” marriage amendment, that is what it should be.

But no one in their right mind would vote for such an amendment.ย

Which is exactly the point.

Gay Marriage

marriage amendmentLook. I believe that when God created humanity, He intended marriage to be between one man and one woman. This was His ideal. This is what He wanted. Anything that does not fall within this ideal is missing the mark, which is the definition of “sin.”

So sure, homosexual activity is missing the mark of God’s ideal.

But so is divorce.

So isย premaritalย sex.

So is having an affair.

So isย pornography.

So is hiring a prostitute.

So is lusting after another person in your heart.

All of these activities miss the mark of God’s ideal.

And the truth is that the Bible talks way more about these other behaviors than it does about homosexuality. The Bible mentions homosexuality six timesย at most, three times in the Old Testament and three times in the New Testament, and a couple of these are debatable depending on how the words are translated. But the Bible mentions divorce, and lust, and prostitution, and sexual activity outside of marriage hundreds of times.

Love and Forgiveness of God

But more than all this, God extends grace and forgiveness to all these areas that miss the mark of his ideal.

Does God love and forgive those who engage in prostitution? Of course!

Does God love and forgive those addicted to pornography? Of course!

Does God love and forgive those who have an affair? Of course!

Does God love and forgive those who have premarital sex? Of course!

Does God love and forgive those who get divorced? Of course!

So does God love and forgive those who are homosexual? The answer is simple: Of course!

Who are we to decide that one way of missing the mark is worse than all the others, especially when God seems more concerned about the ways which we ignore and overlook?

Look. If we are going to come up with a “biblical definition of marriage” we better make sure it is trulyย biblical.ย

And if we are not ready toย truly define marriage biblically, then maybe we should just shut up and sit down and focus on the areas in our own life where we are missing the mark of God’s ideals.

The truth is that we have no business trying to impose our falsely fabricated morality on other people by claiming it is “biblical” when (1) it isย notย biblical and (2) when we don’t follow it ourselves.

So could I support a marriage amendment? Not really. Even if we defined marriage “biblically” such an amendment would never go anywhere because nearly all Christians are guilty of not having a biblical marriage.ย And furthermore, who are we to impose our biblical morality on others through the rule of law? Jesus never did this, and neither should we.

We are Ambassadors

We function in this world the same way Jesus functioned.

We are ambassadors in a foreign nation, and we help others live according to the rules of our kingdom not by trying to impose our rules upon them, but simply by living among them and showing them a different way. A way of love, generosity, service, kindness, and peace. We do not condemn the activities of those around us, for they are living according to the morality and laws of their kingdom. That is fine for them. It is not our way, but we have no right to insist that our way becomes everybody’s way.

If we want to win people over to our way of living, we do it by the lives we live, not by trying to get this foreign government we live under to adopt the ways and rules of the Kingdom we represent.

And this means hanging out with them, going to their parties, and being friends with the people of this foreign kingdom. We must love and accept them just as they are. This was the way of Jesus, and it must be our way as well.

When Friendly Isn’t Enough

When Friendly Isn’t Enough

This is a Guest Post by John Walker, one of the authors in the book,ย Finding Church.ย Previous posts by John include Should I Go to Church, I Don’t Understand Church, and I Choose Friendly.ย John and his wife are retired and enjoy gardening, walking their dogs, and cooking.

If you would like to write a guest post for this blog,ย check out the guidelines here.

Is your church friendly? Is every visitor greeted when they arrive, during the service and after the service? Does the pastor send them a letter telling them how happy he is that they visited the church?

Yet, in spite of doing these things, have you noticed that most visitors never come more than two or three times? Some come only once. Apparently they donโ€™t want to make your church their church.

Several churches in the area where I live have grappled with this situation. Since they were sure they were friendly to their visitors, they decided that they must need to make some changes in order to attract and keep new people.

One church decided to build a new facility on the busiest corner in town. But the church did not grow. Another church hired a full-time minister of visitation. But again, they did not grow. Another church hired a full time youth pastor. But they too did not grow. Actually, the congregation slowly declined in size.

Friends

Becoming Part of the Church

Where did these churches go wrong? They assumed that people were looking for new buildings in good locations, staffed with lots of people. But they overlooked what is often the number one reason that churches do not grow. They failed to make their visitors and new people a part of the church. Allow me to explain what I mean.

After the friendly welcome they received the first time they visited and the customary follow-up letter from the pastor, returning visitors were often on their own. A few people might shake their hands and greet them, but usually newcomers were themselves responsible for getting to know other people in the church and for finding out what the church might have to offer them.

Intentionally Implement a Plan

All of these churches, however, were able to turn the situation around, and now are growing. They learned to make their visitors a part of the church, staring on their very first Sunday. How did they do it? They intentionally implemented a plan. To help us understand their plan, letโ€™s follow a fictional family, Bill and Susan Scott and their daughter Kathy when they visit one of those churches.

When the Scotts arrive, two greeters meet them at the door, ask them to fill out a card with their names, address and phone number, and talk with them briefly to learn a little about them. The greeters then introduce them to a couple of families in the church who share some common interests and who the greeters know will spend some time getting to know them.

Does God Send Storms?

Does God Send Storms?

This post is based on the Grace Commentary on Jonah. Make sure you sign up for the email newsletter to get a free digital copy of this commentary when it is released.

hurricaneIn light of the recent storms in various parts of the world and considering some of the storms and natural disasters of the past, it is sometimes asked whether or not God sends these storms, or if they are simply โ€œnaturalโ€ disasters.

Some Christians have come out to say that such disasters are Godโ€™s judgment upon a nation, a city, or a people for their evil. It is easy to see how these Christians come to such a conclusion, especially when the Bible has several examples of storms and famines sent by God to judge people for their disobedience. God sent fire and brimstone upon Sodom and Gomorrah, the Ten Plagues upon Egypt, and a storm on the ship carrying Jonah.

So it is reasonable to ask whether God sends storms and natural disasters today.

There are four basic answers:

  1. No, and God never has. The Bible is wrong. God allows these storms, but never sends them.
  2. No, though God did do this in the past in biblical times, He doesnโ€™t do this any longer.
  3. Yes, God is in control of everything, and so all storms and weather patterns are a result of His perfect will.
  4. Yes, God can send storms, but He usually doesnโ€™t, and there is no way to be certain today which storms are divinely sent and which ones are just a result of natural weather patterns. However, God can use all storms to call people back to Himself.

I reject option 1 because I do not believe the Bible contains errors. The Bible says that God sent various storms in Biblical times, and I am not comfortable saying that the Bible is wrong.

I reject option 2 because I do not believe that the character of God changes, and if He sent storms in the past, but does not do so any longer, it would seem that the only reason is because He had a change in His character. I cannot accept that.

I also reject option 3 because to me, it is theologically repugnant. I cannot accept the idea that God sends all storms, hurricanes, tornadoes, famines, earthquakes, tsunamis, and a host of other disasters which kill thousands of people, causes terrible destruction, and leads to massive sickness and sadness.

But if I reject option 3, it seems that I must also reject option 4. If it is not theologically acceptable to say that God sends all storms, isnโ€™t it just as unacceptable to say that God sends some? I mean, most storms cause devastation, death, and destruction, so if God sends some storms, isnโ€™t He causing some of these things?

Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God

[This post is based on the Grace Commentary on Jonah. Make sure you sign up for the email newsletter to get a free digital copy of this commentary when it is released.]

Many people wonder what God is like. This is not a new question, and throughout history, different people have approached the question in different ways. Some turn to nature to see what God is like, and others turn to Scripture. The Bible, of course, does teach that nature reveals the character of God. Yet what is it that nature reveals?

red tooth clawIn 1850, Alfred Lord Tennyson wrote a poem called โ€œIn Memorium A.H.Hโ€ in which he said that man:

โ€ฆTrusted God was love indeed,
And love Creationโ€™s final law;
Thoโ€™ Nature, red in tooth and claw,
With ravine, shriekโ€™d against his creed.

In other words, people believe God is love, and also claim that nature reveals the character of God to us. But nature is full of death and blood, which contradicts the idea that God is love. So which is right? What is God like? Is nature right, or is Scripture?

Of course, if we are honest, nature is an inconsistent witnessโ€ฆ and so is Scripture. Nature has just as much beauty, order, love, and wonder as it does death, blood, suffering, and murder, and Scripture has hundreds of dark and disturbing passages which seems to paint a different picture of God than we read about in the Gospels or in 1 John 4:8.

So what is God like? How can we know Him?
