Now Available … By popular demand … I have a “new” book out!

Skeleton Church PaperbackDue to many requests, one of my more popular books, Skeleton Church, is now available as a paperback! Go here to get it on Amazon.

This book has helped thousands of people understand what the church is, and more importantly, how we can ALL live and function together in unity, just as Jesus wanted.

So whether you are in a house church, mega church, or you’re “done” with church … whether you are in a mainline or evangelical church … this book will help you understand what Jesus Christ is building in the world, and how you can both be a part of it and allow others to be their part.

I am pretty excited that this book is now available as a paperback because this makes it more accessible to more people so that more Christians can now live like Jesus in the world.

But that’s not all … As part of preparing this book for publishing as a paperback, it has been edited, revised, and expanded, and now includes a study guide with each chapter, which makes it perfect for small group discussions.

And … that’s not all! Along with updating the book and adding the study guide, I have also created an accompanying online course around the book. The course sells for $97, but when you join my online discipleship group, you can take the course for free.

And there’s more! If you join any of the discipleship levels and take the Skeleton Church online course, you will be able to download a PDF copy of the newly revised and expanded book at the end of the course.

So here is what you need to do:

Skeleton Church Online Course

  1. Buy a copy (or several) of the paperback books from Amazon for yourself (or for your small group study).
  2. Join one of the discipleship levels of RedeemingGod.com
  3. Sign up for the Skeleton Church online course (There are 6 lessons with 3 hours of teaching.)
  4. Go out and live as the church in this world!

Be looking for more books and online courses from me in 2017!

4000 Books 2017

4000 Books 2017

I am one of those readers who reads with a pen in hand. I almost cannot read a book unless I am underlining statements and scribbling in the margins. This slows down my reading speed significantly, but I think it helps sharpen my mind and interact with the ideas of others.

My goal is to read 4000 books in my lifetime, and this post will keep track of my progress in 2017.

reading books

I already own more books than I can read in a lifetime (which I find highly depressing), and so I buy fewer books than I used to, and I have begun to weigh the pros and cons of any book I read.

It’s a little crass, but when I consider whether or not I should read a book, I often think of Elaine from Seinfeld wondering if a boyfriend was “sponge worthy.”

Anyway… with that image in mind … here are the books I have read so far:

  • Birth-2009 Estimate: 1500 (doesn’t count children’s books)
  • 4000 Books 2010: 45
  • 4000 Books 2011: 69
  • 4000 Books 2012: 52
  • 4000 Books 2013: 57
  • 4000 Books 2014: 57
  • 4000 Books 2015: 55
  • 4000 Books 2016: 56
  • 4000 Books 2017: See Comments Below
  • Total so Far: 1891

Some of these books make it onto my list of “The Books Every Christian Should Read.” If you haven’t read the books on that list … well, you should.

What books have you read this past year which influenced your life and theology? What books are you excited to read in 2017?

A Tale of Two Authors

A Tale of Two Authors

two authorsAre you an author, blogger, or podcaster? Can I provide a tiny bit of advice?

Let me do so by telling you about two authors…

Author #1

An author recently emailed me about reviewing his book. This is a summary of how our email exchange went:

Author: Hey! I love your blog. I just wrote a book, and I think your audience would love to read it. Would you buy a copy on Amazon, then review it on your blog? I would really appreciate it. The book is about how Christians should obey everything their pastor says.

Me: Ummm… First of all, do I know you? Second, how long have you been reading my blog? If it’s been for more than a month, you might have realized that the topic of your book would be the exact opposite of what my blog readers would want to read.

Author: I only read your most recent blog post, and I thought it was great. I’m an author and I want people to buy my book. You have a popular blog, so I want you to read and review my book. I think if you read it, you will see what the Bible clearly teaches about submitting to those in authority, and then you will be able to recommend it to your readers, and they will see the truth also.

Me: Tell you what … I will buy, read, and review your book if you buy, read, and review one of mine. Deal?

Author: Nah … I don’t have time for that.

I never heard from that author again, but I sometimes wonder how his book is doing …

Author #2

Then there is the second author, Richard Jacobson. He recently published a fantastic book called (#AmazonAdLink) Unchurching. I was pleased to write an endorsement for the book, and am thrilled to review it here on my blog, on Amazon, and interview him for my Theology.fm podcast (coming soon!).

And why am I happy to do what I can to promote Richard Jacobson’s book? Well, not only because I love what he wrote in his book, but also because he and I have developed a bit of an online friendship. He has been retweeting my posts for a year or more, occasionally comments here on this blog, and interacts with my posts on Facebook. In turn, I try to do the same for him.

And so because I knew him from online, and because I liked the videos and cartoons he publishes, I was thrilled to endorse his book when he asked and do what I can to promote it. It appears that John Zens, Felicity Dale, and Keith Giles feel similarly. They also endorsed his book.

And guess what? When Richard’s book came out, it debuted at #1 in it’s category! That is awesome! (Well done, Richard!)

Here’s the advice for authors, bloggers, and podcasters:

If you are an author, blogger, podcaster, or some sort of other creative person who wants to get your ideas out in the world, the very first step is to be generous with your time and energy.

be generous with timeOffer to help and serve others before you ever think of asking them to help and serve you. Comment on their posts. Share their books and blogs on Facebook. Interact with them on Twitter. If you know they have a book coming out, offer to proofread it, review it, and tell others about it.

Be helpful. Be generous. Be kind.

Then, much later, when you have book or podcast you want to promote, those people whom you have helped will be much more likely to help you as well.

After all, as “Someone” once said, “Give, and it will be given to you …” (Luke 6:38) and “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” (Luke 6:31).

The Grand Canyon and the Flood in Scripture and Science

The Grand Canyon and the Flood in Scripture and Science

Have you ever visited the Grand Canyon? Have you ever wondered how it was formed?

Grand Canyon

As you may know, there are two competing and contradictory explanations for how the Grand Canyon was formed.

Most Young Earth Creationists (Creationists who believe the earth is less than 10,000 years old) believe that the Grand Canyon was formed by the waters of the flood as recorded in Genesis 6-8.

Most other scientists (whether Old Earth Creationists or Evolutionists) believe that the Grand Canyon was slowly formed over millions of years through water erosion.

A recent book tries to reconcile these two views by allowing BOTH science and Scripture to weigh in on how the Grand Canyon was formed. The book is called The Grand Canyon: Monument to an Ancient Earth.

As you may know from my One Verse Podcast in which I am currently working through Genesis 3, and my literal understanding of Genesis 1-3 ends up being quite different than the way Young Earth Creationists understanding these opening chapters of the Bible. Though they may accuse me of not reading the Bible literally, I firmly believe that my explanation is quite close to the way the original author and audience would have understood the text and is therefore, the best and most literal reading of the text. A literal reading of the Biblical text, after all, must take literary factors into consideration.

Grand Canyon Monument to ancient earthAnyway, I was pleased to see that this book on the Grand Canyon puts together some of the best scientific research about the Grand Canyon and matches it with some of the best research and understandings of the biblical text. The end result is that we can agree with much of what science says about the formation of the Grand Canyon while at the same time, seeing that such views are supported and defended by Scripture. This heightens our respect and love for the Bible, rather than diminishes and weakens it.

In the end, the authors and editors of this book argue that the Grand Canyon was formed by lots of water over a very long time, and that this is not only what science argues, but also what Scripture reveals.

This book is somewhat scientifically technical, but the numerous color images, graphs, and charts help make it more accessible to the average reader. No matter what your views are on the Flood and the formation of the Grand Canyon, I highly recommend this book.

The Re-Justification of God is only $0.99 right now on Amazon

Last week Amazon had the paperback version of my book The Atonement of God on sale.

This week, my eBook, The Re-Justification of God, is on sale. This book is an eBook only, and it usually sells for $3.99, but I saw yesterday that they slashed the price to $0.99. That’s 75% off!

A few other people have noticed this sale as well, and have been buying the book today. Right now, it sits at #1 in the Amazon Category “Paul’s Letters.” Here is a screenshot:

re-justification of God

I must confess that it’s pretty cool for me to share a page with N. T. Wright and Timothy Keller…

My book takes a brief look at the difficult passage of Romans 9 and presents a way of understanding this text in a way that looks more like Jesus. By reading this book, you will gain a better understanding of what the text means when it says that God hardened Pharaoh’s heart and that God loved Jacob but hated Esau.

Now I know the cover for the book is pretty boring and bland, but that’s intentional. Here is an explanation of why this book cover looks the way it does. But don’t let the book cover scare you away. As the Amazon reviews for this book indicate, the book is very readable and has helped the people who read it see Romans 9 in a whole new way.

So go get your copy today for only $0.99!

Here is what others are saying about the book:

Fantastic read! Jeremy Myers has a gift for seeing things from outside of the box and making it easy to understand for the rest of us. The Re -Justification of God provides a fresh and insightful look into Romans 9:10-24 by interpreting it within the context of chapters 9-11 and then fitting it into the framework of Paul’s entire epistle as well. Jeremy manages to provide a solid theological exegesis on a widely misunderstood portion of scripture without it sounding to academic. Most importantly, it provides us with a better view and understanding of who God is. If I had a list of ten books that I thought every Christian should read, this one would be on the list.
-Wesley Rostoll

The more I revisit the scriptures, the more I see that the same patterns come up time and time again. God relentlessly pursues us and places blessings and trials in our way to win us over. Israel was chosen for that purpose, as was Egypt. Similarly, individuals are chosen for this service, whether they be like Jacob or Esau, or Pharaoh. God is prepared to make use of men and nations that He might reconcile to Him as many as who would believe in Jesus.

This is what J.D. Myers presents in “The Re-Justification of God.” He explains that in Romans 9, Paul is making a case that the Church needn’t despair about the trials that the Jewish nation was about to suffer. They needn’t worry that God reneged on his promises and commitments and covenants with Israel. In his book, Myers highlights that in the Epistle to the Romans (Chapters 9 thru 11), the Apostle Paul emphasizes that God is faithful in keeping His promises and that He uses some pretty creative means to do so – like blessing the Church (Jews and Gentiles) with primacy in delivering God’s gospel of grace to the world. He shows how Paul argues that the goodness God demonstrates in the Church serves the purpose of calling the Jewish nation to repentance and faith in their Messiah. Since God hasn’t given up on redeeming Israel, God will not give up on seeing the Church’s redemption through to completion: “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus” (Philippians 1:6).
