Seminary Class Notes on Special Revelation

Seminary Class Notes on Special Revelation

Below is a brief summary of my class notes from Seminary on Special Revelation. Remember, in theology, all revelation comes from God in two broad forms, General Revelation and Special Revelation.

Special Revelation

Special Revelation Defined

Special Revelation is the acts of God whereby He makes Himself and His truth known at specific times and to specific people.

Special Revelation comes in various forms.

Personal Experience

Some people have visions, see dreams, receive visits from angels, or hear an inner voice. There are numerous examples of this in Scripture, and it still happens to some people today. But these are “personal” since they rarely happen to groups of people.

Miracles

Miracles can reveal the nature, presence, and power of God. There have been three major periods of miracles in history, during the ministry of Moses, the ministry of Elijah, and the ministry of Jesus and the Early Church.

Seminary Class Notes on General Revelation

Seminary Class Notes on General Revelation

Over the last several posts, I neglected to review and summarize my seminary class notes, which is supposed to be a part of this series on theology. When I first introduced “Divine Revelation” last week, I forgot to open my notes and look at them until today.

So here is a summary of the class notes on General Revelation. Tomorrow I will post the class notes on Special Revelation.

* * * * *

General Revelation

General Revelation is accessible and available to all. It comes from God in various forms:

The World of Nature

It can tell us about the existence of God, including His power, greatness, supremacy, wisdom, and goodness (cf. Psa 19:1-4; Rom 1:18-28).

Revelation is Like a Bouquet of Roses

Revelation is Like a Bouquet of Roses

When science and scripture disagree, there are three options: We can reject science, reject Scripture, or find a way to fit the two together.

I am of the third opinion, but with some qualifications.

Scripture and Nature

First, despite my post yesterday, we must recognize that the debate is not exactly between Scripture and Science. Scripture is raw data, but science is not. Science is the interpretation of the raw data that is found in nature. The real comparisons are between Scripture and Nature. The interpretation of the data of Scripture leads to theology, and the interpretation of data of Nature leads to Science.

Scripture and Nature in Divine Revelation

So we can never really say that Science contradicts Scripture. It doesnโ€™t. Nature and Scripture cannot disagree, because both are simply the pools of data from which Science and Theology come. When Science and theology are at odds, it is only because one or the other has misinterpreted and misunderstood the data.

Scripture vs. Science: Who Wins?

Scripture vs. Science: Who Wins?

Scripture vs. ScienceWhat happens when Scripture and science disagree?

The Dual Revelation Theory argues that God has revealed Himself to mankind in two primary ways: Special Revelation and General Revelation. Special Revelation is a specific message from God to a certain person or group of people. It includes things like Scripture, dreams, visions, and angelic messengers. General Revelation is the way God reveals Himself to all people, everywhere. It includes things like reason, conscience, and nature.

The Dual Revelation Theory states that when properly understood, Special Revelation and General Revelation will never disagree.

But what happens when they do?

For example, one branch of science says that the universe came about by chance, and evolved over a period of billions of years. But one part of the Bible says that God created the universe in six days. Clearly, both of these ideas cannot be correct.

Dueling Revelations

Dueling Revelations

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Along with the earth, God created mankind.

Ever since, mankind has been trying to figure out how God and creation fit together.

For many thousands of years, most people thought that somehow, God and creation were intimately connected. You could learn about what God thought or felt by observing the weather, by succeeding or failing in business, or by being victorious in war.

AristotleAbout 2000 years ago, a man began to question some of this. His name was Aristotle. He argued that a wiser course of action to learn about the gods was through reason and logic. He and his followers argued that if the gods made us, and if the gods love us, then the gods would have given to us the means by which we could figure out what they wanted from us.

Not too long after Aristotle, Jesus lived and died, and His followers struggled with what to do with the teaching of Jesus and the teaching of Aristotle. In many ways, they seemed to agree. But in many other ways, they disagreed. Should the ideas of Aristotle, Plato, and philosophy be rejected outright, or was it okay to learn from philosophy only in the areas of agreement, or was it possible to find a way to reconcile Greek philosophy with the teaching of Jesus?

Hearing from God

Hearing from God

Hearing from God

How would you say God โ€œspeaksโ€ to mankind?

If you started asking people, you would get answers ranging from Scripture, prayer, and angels, to nature, dreams, and inner voices. All of these, and numerous others, are aspects of โ€œDivine Revelationโ€โ€”ways that God has revealed Himself to humanity throughout history.

The dangerous thing about divine revelation is that itโ€™s hard to prove or disprove. As a result, people have been known to say and do some of the most outlandish things, all because โ€œGod told them to.โ€ Wars have been started, and whole nations of people slaughtered, all because someone, somewhere thought God was telling them to do so. (Yes, many such accounts are found in Scripture. Weโ€™ll deal with that later.)

A Hierarchy of Revelation

Somewhere along the way, some people got tired of arguing about what God really said, and who really was “hearing from God” or not, and so they decided to organize and categorize all the various forms of divine revelation, and create a hierarchy. Typically, out of all the various forms of revelation, Scripture is placed at the very top. When it comes to hearing from God, Scripture is the “king of the hill.”

Bibliology is Dangerous

Bibliology is Dangerous

Bibliology - Study of the BibleI am quite hesitant to begin blogging through my seminary class notes on Bibliology — the Study of the Bible.

Why?

Because Bibliology is dangerous. It lays traps and creates aย labyrinth from which it isย very hard to escape. I’ve been trapped in a certain Bibliology for about thirteen years, and in many ways, I feel I am just starting to escape. I would hate to trap anybody else. Of course, maybe I’m entering a new labyrinth and don’t even know it…

Let me back up….

The problem with Bibliology (and Systematic Theology in general) is that the questions it asks are loaded questions. In legal terms, the questions would be considered “leading the witness.”ย This is a dangerous thing to do when the “witness” is the Word of God.

Here is how Bibliology works:

A theologian (like a lawyer) wants to prove a certain point to the judge and jury. So to prove that point, he calls forward a witness which he views as the ultimate authority — Scripture, the very Word of God.

But the judge and jury are not ready to accept the authority of Scripture. They doubt the credibility of the witness. So the theologian has to back up and make an argument for the authority of Scripture. This is what Bibliology is. It is an attempt to prove the accuracy, authority, and credibility of Scripture.

Giving up the Wild Goose Chase

Giving up the Wild Goose Chase

I don’t know much about the Holy Spirit.

And I think that’s the way God wants it.

I used to think I knew a whole lot more than I think I know now.

Wild Goose ChaseIt’s funny how that happens. Just when you think you’ve got God all figured out, He shows up and turns it all upside down. This is especially true with the Holy Spirit.

So I know less today then I knew ten years ago…you know, back when I had all the answers.

Don’t get me wrong. I tried to hold on to God. I tried to keep Him boxed up and tied down. When I felt Him slipping out of my grasp, I tried to corner Him.

But I found that the more I chased, the faster He ran. The more I tried to trap Him, the slipperyer (try saying that 10 times) He became. God’s tricky that way.

It’s like trying to catch a fish with your bare hands. Have you ever tried it? The more you move, the further away they swim.

How to Write Like C. S. Lewis

How to Write Like C. S. Lewis

CS LewisTell me if you recognize this story:

During a war, some children are sent to a relative’s house in London while the father is away at war and the mother is sick. While there, they come by a piece of jewelry which magically takes them to other places. In one of these places, they encounter a Queen who knows magical words of power.

Through a series of circumstances, when the children return to London, the Queen comes with them and causes great havoc in London.

After they get her out of London and back into her own land, they journey to other lands where they witness the rise and fall of nations and empires. They finally return home, and their father returns, and the mother gets well, and all is at peace.

If you said, “Oh, that is The Magician’s Nephew by C. S. Lewis” you’d be wrong.
