The NEW Finding Church

The NEW Finding Church

One of the first books I published was a book called Finding Church.

Can I be honest? I wasn’t very fond of that book…

Finding ChurchSo I was thrilled to learn that Wayne Jacobsen, one of my favorite authors (you must read his book So You Don’t Want to Go to Church Anymore) and podcasters (check out his podcast, “The God Journey“), was putting out a book by the very same title.

Finding Church, by Wayne Jacobsen

His book, due out in October, is also called Finding Church, but his book will be MUCH better than mine.

In fact, Wayne Jacobsen was kind enough to send me an advance copy of Finding Church, and let me tell you, it is as good as I expected.

The last line alone is worth the price of the book.

I’m not going to tell you what that last sentence of Finding Church is, but it has taken me more than 10 years to discover this truth (and I’m still learning it). Wayne’s writings and podcast we influential in helping me learn that truth.

One of the things I appreciate most about Finding Church is that Wayne writes in a gracious way what I have been trying to explain for years to various Christians who think I have abandoned God because I no longer “attend church.”

Wayne JacobsenSome people seem to equate Christianity with attending “church.” They seem to believe if you are truly a Christian, or at least, if you are an obedient Christian, you will attend a “church” on Sunday morning. They seem to think that people like me, who no longer make “church” attendance as part of their weekly routine, have fallen away from God, abandoned the faith, or have given up on following Jesus.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

In fact, for people like me, no longer attending “church” has allowed me to follow Jesus in ways I had only dreamed of when I did attend “church” and experience the love of Jesus in ways I never thought possible.

For me, and millions more like me, the decision to no longer attend “church” was not the result of a failure to follow Jesus, but precisely because I was. It is my belief that Jesus led me away from attending “church” so that I could actually see the Church for the first time, and learn to be the Church in my neighborhood and community.

Obviously, these sorts of statements raise a lot of questions. Wayne’s book Finding Church is one of the best books I know of which answers some of these questions, and, more importantly, provides direction, encouragement, and guidance for those who think that Jesus may be inviting them to leave the four walls of institutional Christianity and follow Jesus into a deeper, more adventuresome, intimate, and real way of living.

In a gracious and loving style, Wayne Jacobsen provides encouragement, hope, and direction to all who have known that there must be something more to this thing we call Church, but have almost despaired of ever finding it.

Are you searching for Church?

If you have been looking for a new church, have been thinking of trying to start a new church, or have been have been wondering about how to be the church, make sure you read Finding Church first.

But be warned! This book doesn’t contain “the answer” you are looking for. There are no “how to” lists or “10 steps” to finding church. The book will, however, open your eyes to see that the Church has been sitting in front of you all along.

Finding Church is currently available for preorder from Amazon, or from Wayne’s own website, Lifestream.org. Go order a copy today!

Finding Church

Finding Chuch 3DFinding Church is now in print!

Do you love church, but sometimes feel that the way church is “done” could be different?

You are not alone.

The contributors to Finding Church feel the same way, and have written their stories to tell of their own experience, and encourage you to find the way God is leading you to be the church in your town and community.

Certain parts of church can change, and the church will still be The Church. Those who recognize this and seek to change the church generally fall into three categories:

Leaving Church

Some of these pioneers in changing the church find that the best way to function as the Body of Christ is to leave the institutional church behind, and live and love like Jesus with other people in their community and their neighborhood. They have not “left the church” but have “left the building” so they can be the church.

Switching Church

Then there are those who realize that the church they current attend will never make the changes necessary to properly follow Jesus into the world, and so rather than stay and fight, they choose to follow Jesus to another congregation in town. They switch churches. These people often get condemned as “church hoppers” but their stories actually show the opposite. They are not switching church because they got bored or wanted to next, new thing. They are trying to live for Jesus and be the church through another fellowship of believers in town. This is often a difficult, but faith-filled move.

Reforming Church

Finally, there are those who experience pain and hardship in church, and often feel like throwing in the towel, but choose to stick it out with their current fellowship of believers to help encourage and change their church from the inside. They recognize that the church is not perfect (and never will be), but that this does not mean the church can stay as it is. If we are not changing and reforming, we are dead.

The book Finding Church includes over 30 stories from people in all three of these categories. Click here to read about all the authors. Whatever your views on church might be, you will be challenged by these stories to view church a little differently, and to not judge or condemn those people who choose to be the church in different ways than you.

Order it today in Paperback or for your Kindle.

Finding Church Authors 34-36

church8In November, my book [scg_html_fc] will be published by Civitas Press. It contains the stories of 36 people and how they have followed Jesus in seeking to live and function within His church. The stories fall into three categories: Leaving Church, Switching Church, and Reforming Church.

Leading up to publication, I am writing several posts which give credit to the authors who made this book possible. Each post will include a short description of three authors and provide a preview summary of their chapters. Below are the descriptions and summaries of three authors in the “Reforming Church” category.

Finding Church Chapter 34 – I Hate the Church; I Love the Church

Aubry Smith is a freelance writer and stay-at-home mom to her two toddler boys. Aubry is an Arkansas native transplanted in Raleigh, North Carolina, where she and her husband are training for ministry. When not wrestling with her babies or writing, she enjoys reading, cooking, hiking, and camping.

In her darkest moment and deepest need, Aubry was abandoned and rejected by the church. For a while, she returned the favor and stayed away. But she eventually returned to help lead the church into maturity as faithful and loving followers of Jesus Christ.

Finding Church Chapter 35 – Focusing on People

John Walker and his wife are retired and enjoy gardening, walking their dogs, and cooking.

Finding Church Chapter 31 – The Bride with the Holes in Her Dress

Travis Mamone is the co-host of the weekly podcast “Something Beautiful.” He has written for such publications as “Provoketive Magazine,” “Relevant Magazine,” “Burnside Writers Collective,” and “The Upper Room.” He has also contributed to the books Not Alone: Stories of Living with Depression (Civitas Press, 2011) and Not Afraid: Stories of Finding Significance (Civitas Press, 2012). He lives in Easton, MD, and blogs at TravisMamone.net.

Travis recognized that the church is full of contradictions and problems. And while he toyed with the idea of leaving the church to follow Jesus, he decided to stay and rebuild the church from the inside out. He believes the way to do this is by focusing more and more on the church’s one foundation, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Finding Church Chapter 32 – Jumper Cables

Mary C. M. Phillips is a caffeinated wife, mother, and writer of short stories and personal s. Her work has appeared in numerous Cup of Comfort and Chicken Soup for the Soul anthologies. She blogs at CaffeineEpiphanies.wordpress.com.
