In the last decade, I have published over 2 million words on this blog, and I am glad that you have found some of these words to be helpful and encouraging in your own relationship with Jesus.

It is a privilege to write about something I am passionate about, which is helping people see that they caFn have a personal relationship with God without the manipulation, control, guilt, fear, and shame that is central to all religious systems.

free from religionBut I have recently encountered a big problem on this blog: Blogging starts to get expensive. Very expensive.

Running this blog is expensive

Blogging, like anything else in the world, costs money to do it right.

As my blog has grown, it has also become more expensive to run. When I first started blogging, it cost me about $100 a year to run this blog. That expense was worth it for me.

But within the last year orย two, as my blog readership has exploded, so have my expenses. This month, people will read about 250,000 articles on my blog. I am thrilled with the impact this blog is making in the world!

But it is also costing meย over $400 a month (about $5000 annually) to keep the blog up and running.

Why does blogging cost so much?

There are “free” or “low cost” ways of blogging (for less than $100 per year). While I used to use these methods, they often crashed under the weight of my readership, and so I have had to steadily upgrade to better web hosting, email service (for my email newsletter), and podcast hosting (for my podcast) so that my site doesn’t crash.

This is a good problem to have because it shows that this blog is helping millions of people around the world each and every year.

I get emails every day from people in various countries who have been helped by the content of this blog. Many of them struggle under the bondage of religion, have questions about the character of God, and desperately need help about how to understand Scripture in light of Jesus Christ. They write to me from all over the world telling me how thankful they are to have found my blog. This blog and my writings are helping liberate thousands of people every month from the shackles of religion so they can enter into the genuine relationship with God they have always desired.

I know that you might have been encouraged by this blog as well.

So I want to do whatever I can to keep my blog up and running.

The problem, however, is that the costs are becoming unsustainable.

While I love blogging and writing to encourage others, the costs are getting to the point where I simply cannot afford it, and I am not sure what to do.

To help defray the cost of blogging, I have tried various things.

I have tried using affiliate links, writing books, and selling advertising.

While each one of these activities brings in a little bit of money each month, they do not even come close to covering the total cost of running this blog.

Monthly Costs: Monthly Income
$150 – Domain and Hosting $15 – Book Sales
$40 – Podcast Hosting $60 – Advertising
$100 – Membership Area $90 – Membership Income
$70 – Email Newsletter
$80 – Miscellaneous
Total: $440 Total: $165

As you can see, the domain name registration and hosting fees are the largest expense. I have numerous blogs, and (as explained above) I have too many readers to go with entry-level hosting (a good problem to have). Also, I cannot host my podcast files on my site, because the number of downloads I receive would crash my blog. The Membership area expenses include the software and shopping cart features I use to create a secure members-only area on my website. I use an email service to send out my email newsletter and keep track of all the thousands of subscribers. The miscellaneous item includes one-time fees for things like book design and publishing expenses, and software or equipment upgrades.

So altogether, I have about $440 in monthly expenses and $165 in monthly income.

blogging expenses

So, I need your help.

I have already cut costs everywhere I can without causing this website to crash, which means I have to find new ways to cover the costs of blogging. Here are my onlyย options:

  1. Accept Donations
  2. Put new blog content in a members-only areaย and charge a small monthly fee for access.
  3. Make weekly or monthly pleas for people to buy my books so that the blog content can remain free.
  4. Close down this site and cancel the podcast.

Obviously, option 4 is out of the question. I am going with Option 1 and Option 2. Let me tell you about Option 2 first.

Option 2: Membership Area

I recently started a Members-Only area of the website. There is a Free Member’s area (the “Faith” Membership level) which grants you access to all sorts of free eBooks, online theology lessons, and audio downloads.

But the real benefit comes in the Paid Membership levels, which is the “Hope” and “Love” Membership levels. These levels help support the work I am doing here at RedeemingGod.com, but also provide you with numerous benefits as well. I want to thank those who support my work, and so these membership levels provide a way for me to do this.

Among these benefits are more free eBooks and free online theology courses. More benefits and courses are coming soon. Go here to become a Member of RedeemingGod.com.

Nevertheless, some people just want to give and do not care too much about receiving the extra benefits of membership. If so, you can make a donation below…

Option 1: Accepting Donations

While I am not a non-profit organization (I am not a 501c3), I have decided to accept financial gifts from those who appreciate how my writing has helped them gain a clearer picture of God and a deeper understanding of how to follow Jesus outside of religion, and who want this same message to continue to be freely offered to others.

I am not asking for donations to cover the time I spend on this blog. I put my blood, sweat, and tears into this blog because I am passionate about showing people a way to break free from the shackles of religion and see God in a whole new light.

Yet I am happy to accept your help in covering the growing expenses of this work.

So if you believe in the impact my blog and podcast are having on others around the world and you would like to partner with me to keep it going, I would greatly appreciate any support you can provide below.

A monthly gift of $10 or $20 would be of great help, or a one-time gift of $50 or $100. Please note that since I do not have 501(c)(3) non-profit status, these gifts are not tax deductible. (I looked into becoming a 501(c)(3), but it would cost even more money I do not have…)

If you benefit from this blog, know that it also benefits thousands of others around the world every single day. But since it is not free to run this blog, would you please consider how you can support this site?

Thanks for reading, and for partnering with me in any way you can. You can make a one-time or a monthly gift through the form below.

Books I Consult for Every Podcast Episode

Here are some of the books I consult for every single episode of the One Verse Podcast:

Genesis books podcast

There are severalย more that are not in this picture… nor does this factor in the journal articles I read or books I use on Logos Bible Software.

And in case you are curious,ย here is my study method.

I hear that many podcasters just sit down to record their podcast, talk into a mic for an hour, and then they’re done.

My podcast episodes take a bit longer to prepare than that… Each 30 minute podcast takes about eight hours just to prepare. The picture above shows part of the reason why.

Sooo … is it worth it?

Well, I’m enjoying studying Genesis 1 and recording what I learn. I hope you enjoy listening to them!

So far, I’m not using drugs

So far, I’m not using drugs

Below is theย third letter in the series, โ€œLetters To Dad.โ€ They are written by Sam Riviera, and are based on the true stories of people he actually knows in real life.

homeless youth in the city

Dad,

At least thatโ€™s what Iโ€™ve called you the last few years. Youโ€™ll probably be the only person Iโ€™ll ever call dad, even though you were my foster dad. According to grandma, if my mom knows who my real dad is sheโ€™s never said. She probably doesnโ€™t know. Grandma says mom was strung out most of the time around the time she got pregnant with me so who knows who my real dad is. Iโ€™ll probably never know.

Grandma says itโ€™s a wonder I ainโ€™t in prison or some institution. All the meth mom was using when she was pregnant with me shoulda fried my brain. Well, I didnโ€™t do great in school and spent a lot of time in the counselors office, but Iโ€™ve managed to stay out of jail. So far…

You told me I could go live with grandma or some other relative. That isnโ€™t happening. No one wants me or has space for me. Grandma thinks I should be able to find a job. Iโ€™ve tried, but they tell me I donโ€™t have any experience and theyโ€™re looking for people with experience. How much experience do you need to wipe off tables and take out the garbage?

I think grandmaโ€™s afraid sheโ€™ll have to support me. She barely gets by on her Social Security check and her landlord is threatening to raise her rent. She says she canโ€™t pay more and doesnโ€™t know where she can find another place for what she can afford, so she canโ€™t have another mouth to feed and a big guy like me must eat a lot.

Thereโ€™s this place for homeless and runaway kids where I can get a hot meal every night. They have showers and used clothes and a few other things. I got a backpack and Iโ€™m hoping for a sleeping bag. Thereโ€™s a place I sleep up under a freeway bridge behind some bushes. It keeps me dry when it rains.

sleeping homeless teen

I was trying to sleep on the street, but itโ€™s too dangerous. I couldnโ€™t find anyone to hang with and you canโ€™t sleep on the street alone. Youโ€™ll get kicked in the head when youโ€™re trying to sleep and they take your stuff. You canโ€™t get any sleep.

A guy I know down there said there was a shooting on the other side of the street last Saturday. Ten cop cars showed up. They ran everyone off the block and took what you couldnโ€™t carry. The next nightย there was a stabbing in the alley around the corner. Some guy died. More cops. This stuff doesnโ€™t even make the news. Like anyone cares when a homeless person gets murdered. Bad for the tourist business. Pretend it doesnโ€™t happen. Weโ€™re not real people.

I guess I understand. The foster kid checks you got for me stopped when I aged out of the system. You have other kids and your job doesnโ€™t pay much. You said itโ€™s time for me to make it on my own. So far that looks like dinner at the homeless kids place, sleeping under a bridge, and hoping I wonโ€™t get stabbed. Iโ€™m trying to follow up with several places that are supposed to help people like me, but they really donโ€™t have any place for me to live or work.

So far, Iโ€™m not using drugs. I donโ€™t have money and Iโ€™m not selling my body or dealing for the privilege of getting messed up by drugs. You donโ€™t know what itโ€™s like down here. Itโ€™s a lot more messed up than you know. There are a few people who care, but they donโ€™t have a place for me to get off the street. The system is totally messed up. Guess Iโ€™m luckier than most. So far…

Tony

[#15] Genesis 1:21 โ€“ Redeeming the Sea Serpents

Is there something in your life you are ashamed of? If you are like most people, there are probably a multitude of such things.

Maybe it is something evil that happened to you when you were younger. Maybe it is some addiction or temptation which you fall to almost every day.

By looking at some shocking truths from Genesis 1:21, we see that God doesnโ€™t want to get rid of those things in your life. No, instead, God wants to redeem them. To turn them around to be used for His glory.

Listen to this episode of the One Verse Podcast to see what I mean.

Great Sea Dragons Genesis 1:21

The Text of Genesis 1:21

Genesis 1:21. So God created great sea creatures and every living thing that moves, with which the waters abounded, according to their kind, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

Supernatural – by Michael Heiser

Supernatural – by Michael Heiser

supernatural heiserA couple months back, I wrote about Michael Heiser’s book, The Unseen Realm. That book was a somewhat scholarly approach to what the Bible says about the world that many modern, Western people ignore: the spiritual world.

Now Michael Heiser has put out another book on the same theme, but with a more popular level audience in mind.

This new book is called Supernatural.

To be completely honest, I preferred The Unseen Realm over Supernatural, but that is probably because I prefer more detail and scholarly research rather than less. The basic content is pretty much the same, however, so if you want a quicker, easier read to get the same message, you might prefer reading Supernatural.

Both books encourage the reader to look at what the Bible says about what is going on in the world around us that we never see. Most importantly of all, Michael Heiser encourages the reader to live in a way that they can get involved in the world of the spirit by how we live, act, and think.

The first step, of course, is becoming aware that the spiritual world exists, and Michael Heiser’s books will walk you through what the Bible says about it.

My only issue with the book is how much emphasis Heiser places on the “Divine Counsel” motif in Scripture. The theme is definitely prominent in Scripture, but I was never quite sure what Heiser was saying about this theme in the Bible, or what he was implying about it. Was he saying that there truly are other “gods” in addition to Yahweh? Was he saying that these were just the angels? Was he saying that somehow we could participate in this Divine Counsel? Where and how do the “principalities and powers” fit within these supernatural perspective?

I hope to have Michael Heiser on as a guest for my Theology.fm podcast in December to ask him some of these sorts of questions.

If you want to know more about the Spiritual realm, one (or both) of these books might be good to read. If you want to learn more about the content of them before you buy one, here is a video about the content of these books in Michael Heiser’s own words:

You can buy Supernatural at Amazon.

FTC Disclosure: I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

How Christians Perform Magic with Salt Water

By Jeremy Myers

How Christians Perform Magic with Salt Water

Have you heard that Christians practice magic with salt water?

It is the most remarkable thing to observe. The magic of salt water turns an ordinary, everyday Christian into some sort of super-apostle of the Gospel.

If you have been feeling that something is missing in your Christian walk, I suggest you look into having the magical rite of salt water performed on you.

And I know it works. I have seen it done with my own eyes on multiple occasions during the past few years.

salt water magic

Here is how the magic of salt water works:

Step 1: Find a person who is relatively ineffectual in living out the Gospel in their hometown.

They probably attend church quite regularly, and have numerous friends and acquaintances at church, but have hardly any meaningful relationships with neighbors, coworkers, or acquaintances outside of church.

It really doesn’t matter what kind of home life they have. If it’s a man, he might be a great husband and father, but he also might ignore his children and neglect his wife.

It doesn’t matter if the person has a job. They could be the CEO of a Fortune 500 company, or they could be permanently “unemployed.”

Personal diet and discipline don’t matter either. Nor do Bible knowledge or theological understanding.

The magic of salt water works on all kinds of people from all different backgrounds.

The main type of person it works on though, is the person who is at the church building every time the front doors are open (Sunday morning, Sunday night, and Wednesday night, at a minimum), but because they are at church so much, they don’t have enough time to build quality relationships with anyone outside the church.

Now, take this person, and watch the magic of salt water do its thing:

Step 2: Send this person overseas (that’s the salt water).

If you take the person described above, and send them across an ocean, they magically go from being an ordinary Christian to a person who is to be praised and glorified.

It also helps if you call this person a “missionary.”

overseas missions

The Salt Water Transformation

It is shocking to observe the transformation that takes places in how this person is viewed by those who remain behind.

The person suddenly is elevated in the eyes and minds of other Christians to a near god-like status. Everything they say and do is now more holy and biblical. Every trial in life they experience (which is normal life for you and me) becomes a direct attack from the devil to stop them from doing “the Lord’s work.”

Most shocking of all, the average Christian in the pew now gets the overwhelming urge to throw obscene amounts of money at this person. While the person may have been living on $50k here in the United States, they now get people to give them $100k or more per year so they can go live in a country where the average annual per capita income is less than $5k. (That’sย equivalent to making $1 million here in the States.)

Now that they are living like kings in this foreign country, they are able to hire servants and maids to do their shopping, cooking, cleaning, yard work, and child-rearing. They can afford to put their children in the best schools. And to top it all off, they don’t have the normal, everyday expenses that you and I have. No, they get cars, vacations, and medical treatment all paid for by supporters.

And all of this miraculously happens because they crossed a body of salt water!

Do not Misunderstand! I Love Missionaries!

Please, do not misunderstand. I really do love missionaries. My sister is a well known missionary. I have many good friends who are missionaries. They like to bring their cooler from Survival Cooking List of Best Coolers when they go on their missions.

But here is my only point: Christianity doesn’t need celebrities, whether they are in a pulpit or overseas.

Every Christian is a missionary, which means that no missionary (whether at home or across an ocean) should get special status, privileges, or recognition.

Peter wrote about the priesthood of all believers (1 Peter 2:5), and I think that if he were writing today, he would write about the missionaryhood of all believers.

Praise the Missionaries All Around You

missionary superheroNext time you are tempted to think more highly of someone because they crossed a body of salt water to serve Jesus, first take a look around in your own town and your own community to praise because rather than crossing the sea to serve Jesus,ย they crossed the asphalt in their neighborhood to love others like Jesus.

Maybe it will be a pastor who has made the hard decision to stay in a small and struggling church for 23 years and faithfully teach and disciple the people in that church even though he could have made more money and earned more praise elsewhere. (I know someone like this. He’s my father.)

Maybe it will be a man who doesn’t “attend” church at all, but who goes out to the “least of these” inย his city on a regular basis to the homeless and hand out cups of cold water on hot days and warm jackets and hot soup on cold days. (I know someone like this. He’s my friend, Sam Riviera.)

Maybe it will be a neighbor who was forced to choose between attending church on Sunday or staying home to care for his shut-in wife, and chose the latter, even though his pastor said such a decision would displease God. (I know someone like this. He’s my neighbor, Leroy.)

Maybe it will be the mother of several young children who sacrifices all of her time, energy, and personal desires to do what is so rare and so difficult these days: to raise up her children so that they love God and love others. (I know several women like this, among whom are my wife and my mother.)

I could go on and on about the many heroic missionaries I know who have never been called a “missionary” because they never crossed a sea, but who will, I believe, be praised by Jesus when they stand before Him, for accomplishing more in His Kingdom than many of those who currently receive praise, honor, and glory for being “missionaries.”

missionary heroThese people … my father, my friend, my neighbor, my wife, and myย mother … have understood the mission to which God called them, and they selflessly carry out this mission year in and year out, and for that, they are “missionaries” just as much as those who have gone overseas.

More impressive still, they carry out their mission with no recognition or praise or banquets or fundraising efforts or conferences or special speaking engagements or book deals or radio interviews or plaques or awards or prayer newsletters or any such thing. They carry out their mission without a paycheck, without support letters, and without donors.

To me, this makes their service in God’s Kingdom that much more impressive and praiseworthy.

If you are a “Missionary”

If you are an overseas missionary, please don’t take anything I have said as a slam on you. I honor and praise what you are doing. Truly I do. I know you have made sacrifices of your own which people who stay in their home countries cannot fully understand. But also please consider that God has called every one of His children to be a missionary, and being a missionary does not require a person to cross the sea. And some people are fantastic missionaries right in their home, their neighborhood, their work places.

And maybe next time you are called to speak at a missions conference, rather than talk about everything you are doing for Jesus overseas, you could take some time to praise the people in the pews for everything they are doing for Jesus on this side of the sea. Tell them there is no magic in salt water. Tell them that they are missionaries too. Tell them that it often takes more courage and boldness to cross the street than it does to cross the sea.

If You Plan a Mission’s Conference

And if you are a pastor of a church or are on the planning committee for a mission’s conference, maybe this year, instead of inviting the overseas missionary to speak, you could invite up the mother who is raising her children at home. Maybe she will share with your congregation how the very first missionary front is the home front, and how the entire world would have been converted by now if parents had just brought up their children at home to love God and love others.

Or maybe you could bring in the pastor of a small local congregation to praise him for how he faithfully served God without giving in to the lure of a larger congregation and a larger salary elsewhere. He could tell you about the pain and struggles and heartache and loneliness of being a small-church pastor in a mega-church world.

Or maybe you could bring in that person who no longer attends your church, but is reaching those in your community (who will never attend church) better than a church-attender ever could. He could tell you about why people leave the church, and how outsiders view the church, and what you and I can do to be the church in the world.

Salt Water has No Magic

If you are feeling that something is missing in your relationship with God, don’t be tempted to think that to be effective in His Kingdom, you need to cross a body of salt water. You don’t.

In fact, it could easily be argued that there are people within 10 feet of you right now who have a greater need for the love of Jesus than anybody you could possibly reach 1000 miles away.

The people God wants you to love are the people who are near you right now. Until the church understands this, we will always fail to understand how the Kingdom of God works and how the Kingdom of God spreads upon the earth.

What the New Testament Authors Really Cared About is Calvinism?

What the New Testament Authors Really Cared About is Calvinism?

What the New Testament Authors Really Cared AboutIn exchanged for a review, Kregel sent me a review copy of What the New Testament Authors Really Cared About. I read and reviewed the companion volume on the Old Testament last year.

Overall, this volume was much better. It provides a decent survey of the New Testament. Each chapter focuses on a particular book of the New Testament and provides a basic overview of the book with some of the prominent themes within it.

However, as with the Old Testament companion, this volume shared some of the same oddities. For example, both volumes consider the books out of order as they are found in the Bible. They explain why they do this, but I think most readers will find it confusing.

Most seriously of all, however, this volume on the New Testament, like its Old Testament companion, emphasizes Calvinistic themes and ideas. This is especially the concepts that good works must follow and accompany faith in order for the faith to be considered genuine, the understanding of repentance as turning away from sin and as necessary for assurance and โ€œfinal salvation,โ€ of the Kingdom of God referring to Godโ€™s final salvation for the redeemed and punitive judgment for the wicked, and Godโ€™s punishment of Jesus for the sins of the whole world to satisfy His wrath.

While most of the contributors to this volume were somewhat neutral regarding Calvinistic interpretations, the chapters on The Letters of John and The Letter of James were the most blatant.

So my primary criticism of the Old Testament volume was that according to the book contributors, what the Old Testament authors really cared about was apparently Calvinism, I have the same criticism about this book.

If you are a Calvinist, you will find yourself agreeing wholeheartedly with the Calvinistic bent of each chapter. If you are not a Calvinist, you can still benefit from the other elements of this book, even though you will have to filter out much of the Calvinistic interpretations and themes.

If, however, you do not know what Calvinism is, and do not know if you are a Calvinist or not, do yourself a big favor and do not read this book. The impression you will get from the book is that the authors are simply teaching what Jesus, Paul, and John really thought and cared about, when in reality, what you will be getting is a strong Calvinistic interpretation of the New Testament.

Letters to Dad

By Sam Riviera

Letters to Dad

Sam Riviera is a frequent and popular contributor to this blog. Many of his posts on loving your neighbors and ministering to the homeless are consistently among the most popular articles on this blog. As I type these very words, one of his articles about homeless people hasย received several thousand pageviews in just two days.

Based on his many years of friendship with lots of homeless people in San Diego, Sam Riviera has learned the stories of several of them, and, with their permission, is writing their stories in the form of letters to their dads. These are the letters that they might have written to their dads.

Letters to Dad

Below is a brief explanation of the purpose of these letters, and some links to resources for you to learn more and get involved.

What is the purpose of writing the Letters to Dad?

First of all, hopefully they will open the eyes of parents who are considering throwing out or abandoning their kids. Many parents do not know what life on the streets is going to be like for their kids. These letters will let them know.

Many of these children will survive by selling their bodies.

Many will become thieves.

Many will become addicts.

Some will never make it off the streets alive.

Secondly, hopefully they will open the eyes of those who follow Jesus to what is happening across America to homeless and runaway teens.

Can we allow this to continue?

Why are there so few temporary and even fewer long-term beds (shelters) for these kids? (The kids usually are not safe in adult shelters.)

Do we have anything to say to โ€œChristianโ€ parents who are about to or already have thrown out their kids because they’re gay, on drugs, having sex or doing other things the parents do not accept?

Religion and the Homeless

homeless youthOne tragic thing to note is that there is a significant relationship between religion and the homeless, runaway kids.

Conservative Christian parents tend to throw out kids who go against their religious beliefs. Often the kids run away before their parents figure out the kid is gay, pregnant, using, a thief, etc. The kids are often afraid of how their parents will react. Sometimes they’re embarrassed or ashamed. Almost always they don’t want to talk to their parents about the โ€œproblem.โ€

If You Are a Parent…

This series of letters is not intended to pile guilt on the parents of troubled teens. Instead, they hopefully serve as a reminder for all parents to:

  1. Tell your children often that you will always love them, no matter what, and that they can always come to you with anything.
  2. Do not judge the homeless person or drug addict we pass on the street. Some of them lived through hell at home before entering into the hell on the streets.

The Goal of this Series

I would love it if the series could open up the conversation nationwide and send kids and parents to those organizations that can help, regardless of where they are at in the continuum the letters will describe.

I would also love it if the series would result in more beds available nationwide for homeless and runaway kids in our country.

We believe in this cause, and have made provisions in our trust to fund homeless and runaway teen programs, especially those with dedicated beds. Maybe this series of letters will encourage others to do the same.

More Resources about Troubled Teens

Although statistics vary, and probably no one knows the exact number of runaway and homeless youth in the USA who are living in the streets, alleys, canyons, beaches, parks, under bridges and any other place they can find, almost everyone agrees there are at least one million homeless and runaway kids in our country. This number does not include those who are โ€œcouch surfingโ€, living temporarily with friends.

The purpose of the โ€œLetters to Dadโ€ series is to tell the stories of a cross-section of these kids. Why are they homeless? Where are they sleeping? How are they surviving? What happens to them when theyโ€™re homeless? Why are they invisible to many of us? How can we help them survive and ultimately get off the street?

Below you will find links to numerous sites that give statistics and information about homeless and runaway youth, including programs that provide services to these kids. You may not agree with some of the beliefs shared on these links. We do not agree with all of them. They are here for your information. Explore them and use the information and resources you find useful.

We will continue to add more links to information and resources as the series continues. If you are aware of sites with information or resource for homeless and runway youth, post the links in a comment on any of the โ€œLetters to Dad.โ€ We will review the sites and add the most helpful ones to the links below.

Some of these sites are Christian. Some are not. While we have reviewed each site, we have not read all of the thousands of posts and articles that can be accessed through these links. We cannot attest to the accuracy of the statistics these sites report. Remember, some of the information is statistical, based on the statistics gathered by that site. Some of the information is based on experience, interviews and opinion.

Statistics vary by location and when the statistics were gathered. At least one runaway and homeless teen program of which we are aware, for example, reports that their group usually consists of about 10% LGBTQ teens, while another program in another city reports that their group is usually about 60% LGBTQ. Gender, age, economic background, race and many other demographics vary widely in the homeless and runaway youth population, and vary by program and location. What do these kids have in common? They are trying to survive in difficult circumstances. Most of them do not have a place they can call home.

fish and nephesh Genesis 1:20This episode of the One Verse Podcastย concerns the question about whether or not animals go to heaven.

Do you believe that โ€œAll Dogs Go to Heavenโ€? To be honest, I donโ€™t know if they do or they donโ€™t. I am nearly certain that there will be animals in the eternal state, but I do not know if God will bring Fido or Fluffy to join you there.

Some people use passages like Genesis 1:20-23 as an argument for the idea that animals have souls, and therefore, animals will go to heaven.

Genesis 1 does in fact teach that animals have souls. Even fish, as weย see in Genesis 1:20-23,ย have a soul. So does this mean that if Nemo had been flushed down the toilet, he would have found himself in paradise? This is one of the things we look at in this study ofย Genesis 1:20-23.

The Text of Genesis 1:20-23

Genesis 1:20-23. Then God said, โ€œLet the waters abound with an abundance of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the face of the firmament of the heavens.โ€ So God created great sea creatures and every living thing that moves, with which the waters abounded, according to their kind, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

And God blessed them, saying, โ€œBe fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.โ€

So the evening and the morning were the fifth day.

In this discussion of Genesis 1:20-23 we look at:

  • Why โ€œcreaturesโ€ in Genesis 1:20 is better translated as โ€œswarmers.โ€
  • Why many English translations leave out the word nephesh in Genesis 1:20.
  • Why a belief that dogs go to heaven leads to a belief in universalism.
  • Nephesh does not mean โ€œsoulโ€ but โ€œlife.โ€
  • What it means for birds to fly across the face of the firmament.
  • The connection between blessings and obedience.
