Homeless people are pretty much just like you and me!

homeless neighborWhen I was a kid, “homeless” meant that you had lost your job and couldn’t pay your rent so you took turns living with relatives until you found a job. No one I knew lived on the street, under a bush, or in a tent in a canyon. I had never heard of such a thing.

When I grew up, I got married and moved to California where I discovered that there were people literally living in the street, under bridges, and in the canyons surrounding our city.

One fine summer day I decided to go to my favorite beach to soak up some rays. When I arrived I ran into an old friend I hadn’t seen since the previous year.

“Hey Rick. I haven’t seen you around.”

“Yeah, I kind of fell off the map. I lost my job last fall and couldn’t find another one. I lost my apartment and ended up on the street.”

“You didn’t have a place to live?” I asked.

“No. I was living in a sleeping bag under a bridge behind the Warehouse restaurant and spending the day in a park a couple of miles away.”

“Are you serious?”

“Yeah. I’m serious. But it’s worse than that. I almost died in January.”

“You did? What happened?”

“Remember that ice storm we had?” Rick asked.

“Yes, I remember.”

“I was at the park when it started to rain. By the time I got back to the sleeping bag I had stowed under the bridge I was soaked to the skin. I crawled into the bag and got it wet too. The temperature was dropping and it started sleeting. I started shivering and shaking and couldn’t get warm.”

“That’s terrible. What happened?”

“Sometime during the night I passed out. The next morning someone found me under the bridge and thought I was dead. They called the cops, who checked me and found out I was still alive, but unconscious. The cops called an ambulance and I ended up spending five days in the hospital. They told me I almost died. My body temperature had dropped below what it’s supposed to be to keep you alive.”

I wanted to cry. How could this have happened to my friend? “Rick, you could have stayed at our house!” I told him.

“I lost your phone number. I didn’t want to bother anyone. I thought it would be a temporary thing. When I started sleeping under the bridge it was only getting down in the sixties at night.”

“Are you still living under the bridge?”

“No. Someone I know ran into me in the hospital and he helped me get a job at a fast food place. After I worked there a couple of months I found another job in my field. I’m back in an apartment and doing good now.”

“Wasn’t there some organization or church that could have helped you when you were on the street?”

“There were these people who fed us lunch every day in the park downtown. I’m not sure who they were, but I don’t think they had any place for me to get off the street.”

“They fed us lunch? Who is ‘us’?”

“Me and the other homeless people around here.”

“You’re saying there are other homeless people here?”

“Uh huh. Lots of them.”

“Where are they?”

“Living in the cracks where you don’t see them. Go downtown and you’ll walk right by them. Some of them are dressed a little shabby. Some of them look like anyone else. If you really want to meet some of them, go to the park downtown at noon. They’ll be there lined up for lunch.”

I was shocked. Homeless people in my town? How had I missed them?

Rick and I spent a couple of hours lying in the sun and talking. That evening at dinner I told Rick’s story to my wife.

After that, we didn’t think much more about it.

A couple of years later a friend asked if I could prepare lunch one day the following week for the homeless. The idea made me uncomfortable. What if I caught a disease from one of them? What would I do if one of them wanted money, or wanted to stay at my house?

feeding homeless peopleReluctantly, I agreed to make lunch for about sixty people. I was about as enthusiastic as I would have been if I had been planning to go to Calcutta to visit the slums. I did not know what to expect when I would actually meet sixty homeless people.

When the day to feed the homeless arrived, the people I met, people who had been unknown and faceless to me suddenly were sitting beside me as we shared stew, bread, and cherry cobbler.

I had expected filthy, stinking drunks with whiskey bottles in their hands and baggies of weed in their pockets.

Instead, the homeless people I met were not that much different from a lot of people I knew.

Some were poorly dressed. Some carried a backpack and sleeping bag. A few had shopping carts filled with their belongings. Several were probably under the influence of drugs or perhaps alcohol. But most of them looked and acted like I thought I might look and act if I were down on my luck.

How can I help people like these? Should I even be helping them? Maybe helping them just encourages them to continue living under bridges. I don’t have the resources to help them get into permanent housing. Shouldn’t the government take care of them?

“Thanks man,” one man said after finishing his lunch. “I want to let you know how much I appreciate this. This is the only time I’ll eat today and you gave me plenty to fill my stomach until tomorrow.” Many of the people who ate the lunch I had prepared said “Thank you, the food was good.” They had good manners, were respectful, well-spoken, and kind.

The homeless people were not that dissimilar to me.

This was quite a shock to me, and I began to ask questions that changed my view of homeless people forever.

How did these people end up on the street?

Do I know people who have ended up on the street?

Do I know people who are in danger of losing their homes?

I thought the poor and homeless lived in large cities like New York and Los Angeles. How many live in my own “backyard”?

Something I had heard somewhere popped into my mind: “If just a cup of water I place within your hand, then just a cup of water is all that I demand.”

I can’t give what I don’t have. But I do have a cup of water and I like these people. That’s a good place to start.

I knew that while I couldn’t save them all, and maybe I couldn’t even save any, I could at least give them a warm meal, a cup of water, or a new pair of socks.

But how do I figure out who among the homeless needs the most help? And how can I determine what the best way is for me to help?

In the following posts we will look at how my wife and I along with a few friends have been answering those questions.

How NOT to do a Trunk-or-Treat for Halloween

[Note: This is a post from a few years ago… but it is appropriate for this year as we near the celebration of Halloween.]

I really want to like the institutional church. Honestly, I do. I want to see all the good it does for people and for the community.

But it seems like every time I give traditional church another chance to reveal Jesus, I get the opposite instead.

Here is what happened:

Tonight was Halloween

We take our girls Trick-or-Treating tonight. We stayed conservative, so no big witch hats or anything scary. Just 3 innocent cow-girls. If you condemn that sort of thing, you should probably just stop reading here. Or you could go read this post about why Christians SHOULD celebrate Halloween.

Trunk or Treat

And though there is six inches of snow on the ground, and it was only 35 degrees, we planned on going to two locations:

First, we went Trick-or-Treating in the neighborhood of a friend of ours. After that, we went to a “Trunk-or-Treat” at a megachurch in town.

Think of it as a competition between the secular version of Halloween and the Christian alternative…

Here is how both went:

“Secular” Trick-or-Treating: Warm Smiles, Lots of Candy, and Free Pizza

Handful of CandyWe met Monica and her daughter at her house at about 4:30. She instantly introduced us to several of her neighborhood friends and their kids, and together, we all walked around the neighborhood, chatting, laughing, telling jokes, meeting people, and petting dogs, while our girls got handfuls of candy from almost every door.

We did meet some ghouls and goblins, ghosts and witches, and even Satan’s bride, but none of them tried to kill us, convert us, or even cast a spell on us (that I’m aware of).

We got pretty cold after about an hour, so Monica invited us back to her place for pizza and hot chocolate. We tried to offer her some money, but she refused.

While we waited for the pizza to arrive, Trick-or-Treaters continued to come to her door. She knew about half of them by name, and chatted with several parents while giving out handfuls of candy to their kids.

At around 7:00, we were planning on going to the church Trunk-or-Treat, and asked Monica if she and her daughter wanted to join us. They are not “Christians” and so we thought maybe this might be a good opportunity to introduce her to church. But she said she had a night class she had to go to, and so we said our good-byes, and left for the megachurch and their Trunk-or-Treat.

How glad I am that she did not come!

Church Trunk-or-Treat: Night of the Living Dead

A Trunk-or-Treat, in case you don’t know, is where a church offers an alternative to Trick-or-Treating. The church gets a hundred people or so to park their cars in the church parking lot, and then they hand out candy from the trunks of their cars. Usually, the church also has games and other activities for the kids.

At this church, here is how the Trunk-or-Treat worked: They had about fifty cars in the parking lot all of them weare covered by a cheap van insurance, and at about half of them, you had to stand in a line for about 10 minutes while kids played little games. When you finally got up to the car trunk, and played the game, the church members standing there gave each kid one piece of candy.

Yes. You read that right. One piece of candy.

And not snack-size candy bars, or little individual-size boxes or bags of candy, but a single piece of candy. Like a single Jolly Rancher. Or a single, individually-wrapped Lifesaver. Or a Dum-dum. Or one of those tiny Tootsie Rolls. The most substantial item was probably the Hershey Miniature bars. Not the Snack Size bars. The Miniatures. Like this one:

Hershey MiniatureBut of course, every single car had a “Jesus Loves You” sign next the candy. And I think we got invited to church about four or five times. We also received several Gospel Tracts along with the tiny piece of candy.

This whole time, remember, it was 35 degrees. We were freezing. So we went over to where they had some food like hotdogs and hamburgers, but they were selling these for $2 each. We didn’t need to warm up that bad, and so went inside the church gymnasium where there were supposed to be some better games where kids could win some bigger pieces of candy.

As we entered, there was a little booth where church members invited us to “sign up” for the church newsletter so they could contact us and invite us to their church. They also had a “Donations Accepted” box. I refused to sign up for junk mail, and refused to give a donation. I couldn’t help remembering that Monica had given our cold children free pizza and hot chocolate, and when I tried to give her money, she refused.

We went in to the church and discovered that at least in here, the pieces of candy were bigger. They had the actual Snack-Size pieces of candy at these games. So the girls stood in line for the first game, which required them to drop a penny into a fish tank. If the penny landed in a little glass dish on the bottom, they won a piece of candy.

Kahlea, our youngest daughter, went first. She dropped a penny into the fish tank, and the penny did not land in the glass dish. So the church lady looked at my five year-old little girl and said, “I’m sorry. You didn’t win. I can’t give you a piece of candy.”

My wife and I looked at each other in disbelief. WHAT?

So our other two daughters gave it a try, and both of them were able to get a penny onto the dish. They both got a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup. I looked at Kahlea. She was about to burst into tears. Thankfully, the lady behind the fishtank noticed this and gave Kahlea a second try, and much to my relief, Kahlea got the penny on the dish and got a Peanut Butter Cup.

At the second game, they had to toss some large rings made of straw onto a bale of hay which had some little stakes in it. To win a piece of candy, they had to get a ring around a stake. At this game, only Kahlea was successful, and so only she was given a piece of candy. The older two girls were not given a second chance. They walked away looking disappointed.

At the third game, they had to toss some stuffed pumpkins into a basket, which had been turned sideways and was already half-full of pumpkins. None of the girls were successful here, and so nobody got candy. I was starting to get frustrated. I wanted to yell, “Just give the kids some damn candy!” Hmmm… Maybe that witch from the neighborhood did cast a spell on me…

Then we noticed a large crowd of parents and children at a big game table in the center of the Gymnasium. We walked over there, and on the table sat every child’s dream: buckets and buckets of candy. There were three tables set up around a “Wheel-of-Fortune” spinning wheel, and on each table sat four buckets, each one overflowing with candy. This looked promising.

I should not have got my hopes up. I forgot where I was: In the land that promises much, but gives little.

The game was a Roulette type game. Six children got to play each round, two at each table. Each one was given a little beanbag pumpkin, and set it on a number from 1 to 12. Then when all six children had made their choice, a church lady spun the wheel, which also had the numbers 1 to 12 on it, and if any child had chosen the number which the wheel landed on, they got to pick one piece of candy from the overflowing buckets.

We waited in line for five rounds before our girls got their turn. In those five rounds, not a single child won a piece of candy. The odds of winning here at the megachurch seemed lower than the odds of winning in Vegas. Not surprisingly, when our girls got their chance, nobody won again.

At this point, Wendy and I decided to leave. Before we did, she took the younger two girls to the bathroom, where two church ladies yelled at them for “cutting in line” when, by all appearances, there was no line.

As I waited for her to come out from the bathroom, I overheard two mothers talking about how disappointed their children were at not winning any candy.

Yes. Mine too.

On our way back out the car, my wife looked over at me and said, “Well, at least it’s better than the crusades.”

We had a good laugh.

Happy Halloween

Look … I don’t care if your church wants to host an alternative to Halloween, such as a “Trunk-or-Treat” or “Harvest Party” or even a “Hallelujah Party” (gag).

But if you do, try to make your Halloween alternative better than anything the world has to offer.

If you have “Jesus loves you” plastered on every vehicle at your Trunk-or-Treat, you better be giving out truckloads of candy. If you have silly little games, fine. But don’t ever make kids walk away from them empty-handed.

If you think Halloween is some sort of contest between Jesus and the devil, just think of candy as the way children keep score.

Mission Shift

Mission Shift

Over the past several years, I have experienced a huge paradigm shift in my thinking about life and ministry. As a result, I have watched with interest how this shift has affected my theology and my ministry practice.

Below is a brief explanation of the shift that has occurred, and a few of the resultant ramifications.

I no longer view myself as pastor, or church planter, but as a missionary…and not just any missionary, but a missionary to a cross-cultural, unreached people group. In plain English, I view myself as a person who wants to introduce Jesus to a group of people who don’t know much (if anything) about Him, and as far as they are concerned, don’t really care to know Him.

The Ramifications:

There are many changes I’ve gone through, but here are four examples:

1. A Shift in “ministry” time.

While a pastor primarily does ministry among the people of his church, a missionary focuses on the people who are not yet part of a church. He immerses himself among them and learns their culture, their language, their issues, their needs, and their concerns. He lives life with them and among them.

Practically, while in the past, I have spent most of my pastoral time in the church office and with church people, in the future, I want to spend most of my time out of the church office, and with the people of the community.

2. A Shift in Vocation.

changeA pastor wants to get paid by the people of the church so he can free himself up to do “ministry.” This is not bad, but a missionary will often get a job in the community so he or she can live and work among the people, and be seen as one of them.

I don’t yet know what I’m going to do, and maybe some of my income will come from the “church budget” but ideally, I want to be living and working among the community. This also has the added benefit of freeing up as much money as possible to actually serve the community.

Many churches are handcuffed by pastoral salaries and building mortgages. Imagine what the church could do in the community and around the world if it didn’t have to pay for pastors or buildings!

3. A Shift in Bible translation. (This one I can hardly believe.)

As a pastor who focused primarily on preaching and teaching believers, I wanted a Bible-translation that was as close to the Greek and Hebrew as possible. Now, I want to use a Bible that is as close as possible to the language of the people I am working among.

When Wycliffe goes into a community to translate the Bible, they don’t try to make a translation that is hard to read but instead, while trying to maintain accuracy, try to get a translation that is as close as possible to the vernacular. So, while I used the NASB and the NKJV, I now think I’m going to switch to the NLT.

4. A Shift in how Truth meets life.

I used to be a professional theologian-pastor. All I did was read, write, think, talk, and teach about the Bible and theology.

I now believe that while doing so is valuable and important, if it does not result in loving and serving others (especially those who are not followers of Jesus), then I don’t really know the truth I talk so much about. While some pastors can afford to live and work in an ivory tower, missionaries must get down and dirty. Theology must come to grips with life.

I have discovered that as I try to live with and love other people (especially those who are not like me and don’t believe the way I do), a lot of what I thought and taught becomes much less important. Knowing the various views of the rapture are not that important when you are talking to a drug addict who is facing divorce.

Truth, I believe, is both tested and forged on the anvil of relationships.

When young pastor Matt Brown announced he was supporting a ministry for women in the sex industry led by an x-stripper, he was expecting applause. Instead, he got cold stares and an e-mail inbox filled with angry letters. At issue was Heather Veitch, an x-stripper turned evangelist. She looked too much like a stripper and was leading Christian women into the dark world of strip clubs for so-called “outreach.” Capturing it all, was documentary filmmaker Bill Day for his new film “The Pussycat Preacher.”

“Most Christians know that Jesus spent time with prostitutes and tax collectors because that is where the word was needed. But believing the ideal is one thing and living the reality is another,” says Day.

“If we all took a vote on being Biblical versus being respectable , we would all vote for Biblical,” says theology expert Professor Sarah Sumner PhD from Azusa Pacific University in the film. “But the reality is many churches are more concerned with respectability.”

Pastor Greg Laurie from mega-church Harvest Christian Fellowship in Riverside was one of pastors who didn’t believe Heather’s method of winning souls was worth the risk. He warned Brown to stay away from Veitch.

“When a Pastor you look up to tells you something like that it’s scary,” Brown confesses. “I’m a pastor and I am supposed to love people. But I didn’t love strippers. What Heather did was she birthed that in me and my congregation.”

Instead of backing away from Heather, Pastor Brown put up $50,000 of church money to support the ministry. But in no time at all, a rumor got started that the $50,000 was being used by Brown to buy lap dances for himself. Brown suddenly found himself on the verge of losing his church facility housed on the campus of Southern California Baptist University.

For her part, Heather Veitch claims she is winning souls and that is what matters. For evidence, she has the documentary which shows a number of strippers making their first venture into church. “Now comes the hard part,” Heather smiles.

Day says the film is not rated but very ‘’PG’’ It has no nudity or offensive language. It is available on DVD from Amazon.

The Atheist-Sensitive Church

The Atheist-Sensitive Church

Jim & Casper Go to Church - an atheist and a Christian talk about churchI recently read Jim & Casper Go to Church by Jim Henderson and Matt Casper. Not only did I thoroughly enjoy the book, but I also appreciate the various blogs managed by Helen (see chapter 5 in the book) over at Off The Map. Go check them out.

The set up for the book is that Jim Henderson “rented the soul” of Matt Casper on EBay for $504.  Jim took Matt to several churches around the country to see what Matt thought of Christianity and the way we “do church.” The book records what happened.

Encouraging Things about Jim & Casper Go to Church

The two main things I took away from this book is that there is incredible value in (1) visiting other churches, and (2) inviting (or hiring) people who don’t believe the way we do to come and brutally critique our churches. Doing these two things would probably change the way most of us do church, and for the better. (As a side note, check out what LeadershipNow says about why businesses should hire “Insultants.” The same thing applies to churches.)

What I found most encouraging about the book is that Matt Casper, the Atheist, had many of the same critiques of modern “churchianity” as I do. Since I want to embrace and engage people just like Matt Casper, it was encouraging to see that in some ways, I am on the right track. His concerns about what is going on in the churches he visited with Jim are similar to many of the concerns I have.

Challenging Things about Jim & Casper Go to Church

The most challenging aspect of the book is how Jim, the Christian, rarely tried to correct or fix Casper’s views. Casper, as an “outsider” really did misunderstand what some churches were doing and why. I sometimes found myself thinking, “Why doesn’t Jim explain that to Casper?”

But at the end of the book (pp. 149-150), Jim explains why he didn’t.

There are three basic reasons: First, when people visit a church, they generally don’t have someone there to answer their questions and refute their misconceptions. Second, most Christians in the pews wouldn’t know how to respond to Casper anyway. Third, most of us Christians are too defensive and argumentative toward people who criticize the church. Instead of trying to develop genuine relationships with people, we most often try to win arguments. That’s no way to reach out. Rather, we should let their critiques stand, and maybe change the way we do some things.

I could go on and on about this great little book (even though there were some things I disagree with). Let me just give you a few of the best quotes:

Jim: “A while back (1,700 years to be exact) the church drifted into the religion business. I call it beliefism — the worship of the right beliefs — and what you’re hearing today is a version of beliefism. Rather than Christians giving priority to what we do, we’ve been taught a view that tells us what’s really important to be known for is what we believe” (p. 7).

Casper: “Is that what Jesus told you guys to do? Put on a  Christian rock show that’s visually and sonically indistinguishable from a non-Christian rock show, change the words, and call it church? Is that pulled from the Bible?” (p. 18; cf. similar statements on pp. 39, 67).

Casper: “Outreach only lasts so long. The first step is always pretty good, polite outreach: ‘Would you like to come check out our church?’ Then it’s ratcheted up a notch: ‘Have you thought about where you’ll spend eternity?’ And then, they throw in the towel: ‘Have fun in hell, sinner!’ Maybe I’m exaggerating, but you get my drift” (p. 95).

Casper: “I understand that Christians believe Jesus was free of sin, but my impression is that he didn’t focus on that. He wasn’t like, ‘Look at me! No sin at all! Be just like me!’ Based on what I’ve read, his main thing was going out and helping the poor and those who were suffering, and instructing others to do the same” (p. 100).

Casper (note this from an Atheist!): “If the Bible is really the Word of God, it’s very, very important to not take it out of context. I mean, that’s the rule that applies to most every phrase ever said, so you’d think it’d apply tenfold to the Bible! …You can’t take a snippet of the Bible out of context and misuse it, or spin it, to support your particular pitch. That’s twisted” (p. 141).

The book abounds with such insights from an Atheist. I recommend reading it, and then going out and finding an Atheist or two to come visit your church and tell you what he or she thinks. Tell them to be brutal.

Then, when they are brutal, don’t try to defend yourself. Just listen. Whatever you do, don’t do this as some sort of marketing pitch to get Atheists to attend your church. That’s just dishonest. Be genuine. Be real. Just try to make friends. And if you can’t make friends with atheists, I suggest shutting down your church because you’re not doing anybody any good.
