I want to wish Happy Mother’s Day to all of the women in our lives. Thank you for your self-sacrificing service, your unfailing love, and your patience toward all your children, both those who are growing and grown.

I know that for my own sake, I would not be who I am today if it were not for my wife and for my mother. My mother raised and trained me to be who I am.

My wife, Wendy, has loved me and stuck with me through some very hard times. She is constantly my biggest fan and greatest source of love and encouragement. I thank God every day for my wife when I see how my three girls are growing up into beautiful, godly, young ladies.

Make sure you give the honor to your mother and the mother of your children that they deserve.

Human Trafficking Has Many Faces

When you think of “slavery” what comes to mind?

You probably think of people from 200 years ago picking cotton down south, getting whipped and beaten if their master doesn’t like how much they picked. Right?

On a previous post, Sam pointed out the many faces of Human Trafficking today. Here is what he wrote:

Here, near the border with Mexico, human trafficking has many faces, many of them disguises. For some, it is the live-in 24/7 “house-keeper/child care provider/cook” who never earns enough to pay off her employer who brought her to this country. For some it is the “wife” (who matches the previous description” and is also expected to perform “her marital duties”).

For some, it is the Tijuana prostitute whose primary customers come from North of the border. Ride the trolley any afternoon to the border and you will probably see some of her “customers”.

For some it is the group of Hispanics waiting alongside the road for people to pick them up to work for cash. Some of them are here legally. Many are trying to pay off the person who smuggled them into the country and who is providing them subpar housing at above-market prices. When we pick them up and pay them a few dollars for their work and threaten to call immigration when they complain, we too are complicit.

Human trafficking masquerades as meeting our needs at a price we can afford in a tough economy. It is one of those issues most of us would like to pretend does not exist, at least not where we live.

There are millions of such human trafficking victims around the world today, and even here in the United States, “the land of the free.”

Human Trafficking is a terrible problem around the world today, not just in other countries, but also here in the United States. Some estimate that there are 31 million human trafficking victims every single year.

Human Trafficking Must Stop

My family and I are doing what we can to stop human trafficking, from educating ourselves and raising money for organizations that rescue the women and girls to being on the look out for potential victims. One day, we hope to be personally involved with rescuing and protecting human trafficking victims.

Human Trafficking sex slavery — Human Trafficking in the United States is a huge problem. What are you going to do about it?

I work with people from seventeen different religions. No, not different Christian denominations, but seventeen different religions. Here they are, if you are curious:

Protestant, Catholic, Jewish, Messianic Jewish, Muslim, Nation of Islam, Moorish Science Temple, Buddhist, Hindu, Mormon, Jehovah Witness, Santeria, Rastafarian, Wicca, Asatru, Native American Spiritism, and Scientology.

As I listen to and observe the people of these various religions go about their work and live their lives, as I join with them in discussion about their beliefs and practices, I have come to one major conclusion about something that all religions have in common:

While many people say that Religion Breeds Hate (and this is often true), I believe that it is also true that Religion Breeds Hats.

Not Church Sponsored Activities

Hanging out with “sinners” is tricky business. On the one hand, we want to be known as “a friend of sinners” as Jesus was. But on the other hand, we want to remain free from sin. The Pharisees in the days of Jesus (and most church-going Christians today) decided that the safest route was just to separate themselves completely. In fact, that’s what “Pharisee” means: separate.

And I will admit, it is difficult to be friends with someone when you don’t share the same interests or get involved in the same sins. How can you hang out with people who spend their weekends getting drunk and sleeping around while not getting dragged into such activities yourself?

Jesus, the Friend of Sinners

It’s a fine line for sure, but one that must be walked. Jesus, somehow, was a master at this. In Luke 5:27-32, he attends the dinner with a bunch of reprobate tax collectors. There was certainly lots of drinking and eating, and possibly some after-dinner activities as well. At the bare minimum, most of those in attendance probably got drunk (Keener, Bible Background Commentary, 203). And yet we know that though Jesus was there, he did not do anything sinful. How do we know this? The Pharisees, when they challenge Jesus and His disciples, the only thing they can complain about is that they have shared a meal with tax collectors and other sinners. They have no other accusation.
