Letting Go in Life

Letting Go in Life

The May Synchroblog subject is posted. Here is what Kathy Escobar writes:

Have you found more life by letting go of something? So many of us are continuing to grow in our faith by letting go of things that we once held tightly. ย These things arenโ€™t easy to shed. ย Sometimes people think weโ€™ve lost our minds, are ascribing to bad theology, or have put our souls in mortal danger.ย  But many of us, in different ways, have found a deeper, richer, and riskier spiritual life as weโ€™ve let go of certain rules, doctrines, theologies, or practices along the way. ย  The weeks following Easter are centered around new life, so for Mayโ€™s synchroblogย letโ€™s write about some of the things weโ€™ve let go of along the way in our spiritual journeys and what weโ€™re learning in the process.

Please plan to submit your name, name of blog, title of post and link in the comment section of the May announcement here on this blog by 6 p.m. EST May 10th, 2011 if you would like to be included in this synchroblog.

The list of participants will be compiled and posted on 5/11/2011.ย  Thanks for including the link list at the end of your post, too.

I will start working on my post today. I hope you decide to join us!

The Essential Bible Companion to the Psalms

The Essential Bible Companion to the Psalms

I recently read The Essential Bible Companion to the Psalms. I have mixed feelings about this book.

First, the good.

This is a great introduction to the Book of Psalms. The first part of the book contains some great background information on Hebrew poetry, the authors of the Psalms, the types of Psalms, and how to read and use the Psalms. These sections are not overly academic, but help answer some of the major questions and issues that people face when they read Psalms.

I really enjoyed the two pages on personalizing the Psalms (pp. 25-26) as I firmly believe that all Scripture is helpful for learning about ourselves, about God, and how to communicate with Him. The Psalms especially are helpful in learning how to pray and interact with God. These two pages show how you can use the Psalms to live a life in conversation with God.

Third, the Quick Reference charts starting on page 29 were also helpful. They showed some of the difficult words that readers will encounter in Psalms, the different types of Psalms, and a few other things.

Fourth and finally, I really liked the layout and summary section for each and every Psalm. On a single page, we learn the theme, the background, the structure, and some special notes about the Psalm, as well as some helpful notes for reflection. These pages are beautifully illustrated with pictures and images that connect with the subject of the Psalm. Each chapter reminded me of a perfectly crafted blog post on one of the Psalms. Frankly, I think that as more and more people read blogs, we should (and will) see more and more books follow the “blog post” layout structure. This was a brilliant decision by the editors of this series.

Revoke your Tax-Exempt Status

Revoke your Tax-Exempt Status

In the United States, churches do not have to pay property taxes. This is a great benefit to churches, especially when church budgets are tight.

But have you ever wondered why churches are given tax-exempt status? It has nothing to do with the separation of church and state. The reason churches are given tax-exempt status is the same reason that any other non-profit organization (whether religious or not) is given the same status: they engage in charitable work that benefits the community. The government wants to encourage people to be charitable, and so gives tax-exempt status to charitable organizations.

Therefore, if a church is not engaging in charitable service in the community, it is reasonable to ask them to surrender their tax-exempt status. Churches, like any charitable organization, should only get tax-excempt status if they can show where and how they are providing a service to the community.

“But,” a church might say, “We cannot afford to do much in the community. We are barely paying our bills as it is.”

Human Trafficking Must Stop

Human Trafficking Must Stop

Human Trafficking is a terrible problem around the world today, not just in other countries, but also here in the United States. Some estimate that there are 31 million human trafficking victims every single year.

Human Trafficking Must Stop

My family and I are doing what we can to stop human trafficking, from educating ourselves and raising money for organizations that rescue the women and girls to being on the look out for potential victims. One day, we hope to be personally involved with rescuing and protecting human trafficking victims.

Commentary on the Gospel of Luke

Commentary on the Gospel of Luke

I am writing an online commentary on the Gospel of Luke over at GraceCommentary.com. However, I also want to bring the Gospel of Luke to life, not just with insights and information from the cultural background of the Bible, but also by showing how Scripture makes a difference in your life.

I occasionally make posts about this here on the Till He Comes blog, but decided to create a single Post which lists the entire blog series by chapter and passage. This will not only help bring the Bible to life in your own reading of Scripture, but also if you are preparing to teach a Bible Study or preach a sermon.

I try to add one or two of these per week, so check back regularly. When I finish with Luke, I will move on to other books of the Bible. You can subscribe here and to the Grace Commentary feed to make sure you get them all.

Redeem your Church Building

Redeem your Church Building

In numerous previous posts, I have proposed that churches sell their building in order to live according to kingdom principles and become more missional.

Maybe you are not convinced.

Or maybe you cannot imagine doing church without owning a building. Maybe you truly do need to own a building to carry out your God-given mission in your community. There are many churches around the world that own buildings and use them for the Kingdom to the glory of God. Maybe yours is one of them, and selling your building might actually interfere with your mission in the world.

Fine.

I am not against buildings per se. I do not believe that owning a church building is necessarily sinful or wrong. Buildings are a tool, and can either help or hinder the mission of the church. There are many cases where buildings can be used effectively.

My primary concern is that for many churches, buildings are chains that hold the people back from truly ministering in an effective way in the community. With buildings come footholds of power, money, and control that hold many congregations back.

How to Sell Your Church Building (Part 2)

How to Sell Your Church Building (Part 2)

sell your churchYesterday we looked at two places that might buy your church building if you wanted to sell it as way of becoming more missional.

I suggested you could sell it to a group within your church that is forming a non-profit organization, or you could sell it to another church in town that is looking for a building. Here are two more places that might buy your church building.

3. Sell it to a business.

Sometimes local businesses are eager to get church property because it often has good parking and a central location. If you do sell it to a business, the church will often convert the building into office space, a warehouse, or a training center. I heard of one business that likes to buy up churches and convert them into dance clubs. For some reason, people like to dance in churches.

I know that many elders and churchgoers donโ€™t like the idea of their building becoming an office complex or dance club, but from Godโ€™s perspective, is the building really accomplishing its purpose by sitting empty six days of the week, or being a place that Christians dump thousands and millions of dollars into every year just so they can have a place to talk about the Bible? Is that really better? What is a building anyway but a bunch of wood, rock, and metal? Thereโ€™s nothing sacred about it, other than what is sacred about every other building as well.

Religion Breeds Hats

Religion Breeds Hats

I work with people from seventeen different religions. No, not different Christian denominations, but seventeen different religions. Here they are, if you are curious:

Protestant, Catholic, Jewish, Messianic Jewish, Muslim,ย Nation of Islam, Moorish Science Temple,ย Buddhist, Hindu, Mormon, Jehovah Witness, Santeria, Rastafarian, Wicca, Asatru, Native American Spiritism, ย and Scientology.

As I listen to and observe the people of these various religions go about their work and live their lives, as I join with them in discussion about their beliefs and practices, I have come to one major conclusion about something that all religions have in common:

Rally to Restore Unity

While many people say that Religion Breeds Hate (and this is often true), I believe that it is also true that Religion Breeds Hats.

God Does Not Rape

God Does Not Rape

God does not rape. He woos.Rachel Held Evans has a great guest post today from Elizabeth Esther about the will of God and the will of humans. She writes this:

It wasnโ€™t until recently when I was reading about the persecution of Romanian Christians under Communist rule that something changed for me. According to the late Patriarch Theoctist of the Romanian Orthodox Church,ย โ€œMan has a very powerful willโ€”so powerful that even God Himself does not break it. And by this [God] is actually showing that man is in the likeness of God. Without manโ€™s will he could not make any progress on the way to goodness. So out of all the gifts that God grants the human being, we believe that freedom is one of the most important.โ€ (Mysteries of the Jesus Prayer, p.126).

The entire post is great, and I encourage you to go read the rest.

While I used to believe that God forced His will upon us, it one day occurred to me that this was similar to rape. Even if it was out of His love for us, love (by definition) cannot be forced upon someone else. It can only be freely offered and freely received.

How does God win us over? The same way a man wins over a woman – through wooing, kindness, generosity, acts of love, tender words, service, self-sacrifice, priceless gifts, and sometimes, feats of strength. Yes, God is a show off. If you don’t believe me, have you watched a stunning sun set recently? Have you looked at a snowflake? Have you studied a tree?

No, God does not rape. He woos.
