Are you afraid of the Unforgivable Sin? Don’t be. You have NOT committed it!

Are you afraid of the Unforgivable Sin? Don’t be. You have NOT committed it!

Most Christians have wondered at one time or another if they have committed the unforgivable sin. Have you?

If this is your fear, be encouraged. You have not committed the unforgivable sin.

You are not eternally damned.

You are not forsaken by God.

You are not hated by God.

You are not outside the bounds of His love and grace.

Quite to the contrary, you are loved by God more than you possibly know.

unforgivable sin

You are forgiven. You are accepted. God loves you!

When I first became a pastor, the very first counseling session I had was with a member of my church who was afraid they had committed the unpardonable sin.

I had personally struggled with fear about this sin in my own life, but I sort of thought that I was alone in this struggle. As I talked with this church member, I clearly remember feeling a sense of relief that I was not alone in being afraid about this sin. There were two of us!

A month later, a high-school student in the church asked me about this sin. He was angry with God and said some things to God that he regretted. He wanted to know if he was now doomed to hell.

Then I received an email from a single mother in the church who had gotten pregnant out of wedlock. Twice. The first pregnancy had been aborted. Someone told her that she was now a murderer and God would never forgive her. She wanted to know if that was true.

I began to see that fear about committing a sin that God would never forgive was a common fear in the lives of other people. So I decided to preach a sermon about the Unpardonable Sin, and what I believed the Scriptures taught about God’s love and forgiveness for us – no matter what we say or do.

To this day, this sermon on the Unforgivable Sin is still my most popular sermon on this website, and I get weekly emails from people all over the world who are afraid they have committed the unforgivable sin and want to know if God still loves them and if there is hope for them.

I do not know if you struggle with fear about the unpardonable sin. But if not, I guarantee that you know people who do. They may not express this fear to you, but there are people in your life who have done something they fear God will never forgive.

If you are afraid you committed the unforgivable sin, I have created a short series of emails you can receive about this sin (You can sign up below).

These emails explain what this sin is (and is not) and how to know that you have not committed it.

Even if you do not personally struggle with fear about this sin, you might want to get these emails anyway, since you almost certainly will encounter somebody who is afraid of it, and it would be helpful for you to have a way to encourage them and give them hope about God’s love and forgiveness.

In this series of emails on the Unforgivable Sin, I show why you have not committed this sin, and you can know that you have not committed it.

If you struggle with fear about committing the unforgivable sin, this free series of emails is for you.

This series of posts begins by surveying the various views about the unforgivable sin, which is also called “blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.” This survey includes an examination of Matthew 12:31-32 so that we can understand what Jesus meant when He talked about the unforgivable sin.

The most common theories about the unpardonable sin (also called the unforgivable sin) include the sins of adultery, divorce, murder, and even cursing the Holy Spirit. None of these are the unforgivable sin.

Not even suicide is the unforgivable sin.

While many churches and pastors teach that those who commit since like those listed above can never be forgiven, this series of posts reveals that all such sins are forgivable by God.

If you have committed adultery, you are forgiven!

If you got a divorce, you are forgiven!

If you had an abortion, you are forgiven!

If a friend of yours committed suicide, this does not mean they automatically went to hell.

If you are afraid that you blasphemed the Holy Spirit, do not worry — God has already forgiven you for whatever you said or whatever you did.

Even if you cursed God, cursed the Holy Spirit, or said some terrible things to them, God still loves you and still forgives you.

Yes, it is true… There is a sin in the Bible which is “unpardonable.” Yes, the Bible talks about a sin which cannot be forgiven.

But there is so much bad teaching in the church about what this sin is, how it is committed, and whether or not there is hope for those who commit this sin, but you do not need to worry about committing it.

Some churches teach that there are seven unforgivable sins in the Bible, or that there is one thing you can say which will cause God to hate you forever, or that if you have done something terrible in your past there is no hope for your eternal soul.

All such teachings are unhealthy! They do not reflect the heart of God, His great love for you, or the infinite forgiveness He has provided to you in the person and work of Jesus Christ.

If there is a sin you have committed which you think is unforgivable, or which makes you think God does not love you, or makes you feel like you cannot be forgiven, do not worry any longer. This series of emails will give you hope for your future and reveal to you the infinite love, grace, and mercy of God for you.

In the end, you will learn that you have not committed the unforgivable sin.

If you fear you have committed the unforgivable sin, or if you simply want to learn what this sin is (and is not), sign up below to receive a series of free emails about this sin.

Do you fear that you have committed the Unforgivable Sin?

Fear not! You are forgiven. You are loved.

Fill out the form below to receive several emails from me which explains how you can know that you are loved and forgiven by God.

How to hear the Voice of the Spirit

How to hear the Voice of the Spirit

Listening to the SpiritFor many, the guidance of the Holy Spirit is a mystical and magical affair.

It is believed that listening to the Spirit is only for the most spiritual of Christians, and hearing the Spirit is often accompanied by strange experiences like dreams, visions, and speaking in tongues.

But such an approach to the Spirit does more damage than good.

It treats the Holy Spirit as some sort of pagan deity who must rely upon ecstatic utterances and erratic behavior to get his message across to people. Many false religions depend on such things, and believe that their particular deity cannot speak to them except through such strange behavior.

But our God is not like their gods.

The Spirit’s Voice

The Spirit’s voice is more like the still small voice of God which is most often mistaken for our very own thoughts.

Since all who have believed in Jesus are indwelled by the Spirit of God, we must take it on faith that the Spirit who empowered Jesus also empowers and guides us.

As we go about our days, seeking to follow Jesus and love others, we must recognize that many of the thoughts that “pop into” our minds regarding the needs and concerns of others, are probably not our own thoughts, but are rather due to the quiet, influencing guidance of the Holy Spirit.

blog boardI love having other bloggers and authors write Guest Posts for this blog. See some of the previous Guest Posts here.

While we do accept Guest Post Submissions for the Redeeming God blog, we are moving away from publishing guest posts from random contributors, and are instead focusing on building community within our regular readers. This means that we will only consider guest posts from people who are active in the comment section and membership section of this blog. So if you want to get published on RedeemingGod.com, start by registering as a member, reading some of the blog posts, interacting with others in the comment section, and generally just contributing to our online community.

If you are part of our community and want to write a Guest Post for my blog, I am willing to consider it for publication.

Your post would be:

  • Viewed by 1000s of daily visitors
  • Sent out to over 3000 people on my weekly mailing list
  • Tweeted to over 8,000 followers
  • Posted on my Facebook page with over 10,000 “close friends“

All of this could lead to more exposure and readers for your blog!

But here’s the thing … and this is important!

I get about a dozen emails a day from bloggers who want me to help them. Few ever offer to help with my blog. Only rarely do I recognize them from the comment section on this blog, or from seeing them share my posts on Facebook or Twitter. So these bloggers clearly don’t want to build a blogging relationship; they just want to use me. This doesn’t feel good.

If you want to write a guest post for this blog (or for any blog), let me give you two bits of blogging advice that I have put into practice over the years and which have helped me immensely:

  1. Help others first. Before you seek to get other bloggers to help you, first help them. Share their posts on social networks. Comment on their posts. Add to their community. Be friendly. Be helpful. The vast majority of the guest posts I publish here on this blog only got published here because they were active participants here first. If I came up to you on the street and you had no clue who I was and I said, “Hey, buddy. Can I have $20?” I doubt you would give it to me. But if we had been friends for a few years, you might be more willing to help me out. Blogging is the same way. Bloggers are more likely to help people they know than to help random strangers.
  2. Do your homework. Before you approach a blogger about maybe getting some help from them, make sure that you have searched their site for “guest post guidelines” or something like that. If the site doesn’t have a search box, just search Google for “guest post RedeemingGod.com” and put their blog name in the place of mine. I regularly get emails from people who say, “Hey, do you allow guest posts? I want to write one. Let me know how.” They clearly did zero research, and are not regular readers of my blog, so this give me no reason to want to help in return. It is sort of like people who want to get their blog on my  “Top 100 Christian Blogs” list. They send me emails saying, “How can I get on this list?” Well, the list itself tells people how. Anyway, if you want to write a blog post for another blog, do your homework. But YOU clearly have done some homework, because you are reading this! Well done! So here are some steps for submitting a guest post on the RedeemingGod.com blog:

To submit a guest post to RedeemingGod.com, take the following steps:

  1. Write a 400-800 word blog post on any topic related to Scripture and Theology (Read some of the others here). Your post should be an original article, which has not been posted elsewhere online.
  2. Find an appropriate picture or two which fits your blog post.
  3. Include a small picture of yourself and a 30-50 word bio with 2-3 web links to your blog or other social sites.
  4. Send all of this to me at guestpost AT redeeminggod.com

I am looking forward to reading what you submit!

Hmmm….

Then Sam emailed me today and said that my comment sections were all out of whack. I think my caching setting were not allowing Disqus to work. (Thanks, Sam!!)

So…. I think I have it all fixed now.

The Disqus commenting system also has these cool features: You can Like my post by sharing it on Twitter and Facebook, or, better  yet, share your own comment on Twitter and Facebook.

What if Jesus did not rise from the dead?

By Jeremy Myers

What if Jesus did not rise from the dead?

What if Jesus did not rise?I believe the resurrection did, in fact, occur. I believe Jesus truly did rise physically from the grave on the third day after He was crucified and buried. But the question before us is, “What if Jesus did not rise from the dead?”

There are a thousand possible answers to such a question, but let’s just face the music and jump to the hardest and most troublesome answer of all: If Jesus did not rise from the dead, probably most of Christianity is a lie. We could probably hold on to the idea of God, and some of the historical events in the Bible, but beyond that, most of it would probably not be true.

I mean, if the resurrection of Jesus did not happen, then most of the Bible is probably not true because most of the Bible is centered on the idea of the resurrection.

If the resurrection did not happen, the truthfulness of the Bible itself should be doubted.

But you know what?

Even if the Bible cannot be trusted, even if Christianity is based on a lie, even if nothing I believe is actually true, I don’t think much of anything in my life would change.

Why not?

Because what other options are there?

Should I join a different religion? Which one? I have studied and worked with all the various religions, and find none of them as compelling or life-changing as Jesus. I find all of them to be less inspiring than the stories about Jesus and the truths contained in Scripture, even if these things are lies.

If everything about Jesus is a lie, I would rather follow the lie that is Jesus than the truth of any world religion.

What about atheism? God, no! (I am not cursing! That was a pun!) I know many atheists, and I guess I would rather live by an inspiring story I knew was mostly wrong than a belief that everything is chance and nothing has meaning beyond the physical realm. Call it a crutch if you want, but I have enough trouble living life with God. I cannot imagine trying to get through life without Him.

If the resurrection did not happen, then most of the Bible is probably false. But that does not mean that some other religion is true, or that we must all become atheists.

To the contrary, even if the resurrection did not happen, we can still follow the teachings and example of Jesus. Why? Because there is no other person or idea in any other religion or in all of history that is more inspiring, loving, and hopeful than Jesus.

Even if Jesus did not rise from the dead, I would still follow Jesus. For me, there is no other option.

C.S. Lewis once considered a similar question. In one of his letters to a friend, Lewis explained what he would do if he found out that God had actually lost the cosmic battle to Satan. In such a case, there would be no heaven for believers, no hope for life after death, no cause to believe that God was all-powerful or perfect. But in such a situation, what would C. S. Lewis do? Here is what he wrote:

Even if—let’s make an impossible supposition—His voice—unmistakably His, said to me, “They have misled you. I can do nothing [about taking you to heaven]. My long struggle with the blind forces is nearly over. I die, children. The story is ending,” would that be a moment for changing sides? Would not you and I take the Viking way: “The Giants and Trolls win. Let us die on the right side, with Father Odin” (Letters to Malcolm, 120).

What if the resurrection is false? In other words, C. S. Lewis says that even if God Himself spoke to Lewis and told him that it was all a lie, that God had tried His hardest, but had finally lost, and was now about to disappear into oblivion and defeat, C. S. Lewis says it would not matter one bit. He would still stick with God. He would not switch sides. He would go down fighting, next to our dying God.

That is the same way I feel about Jesus.

I firmly believe everything written about Him in the Scriptures. I believe it is all true. I believe in the virgin birth, the miracles, the teachings, the death, and the resurrection of Jesus.

But if He were to appear to me and say, “You’ve been misled. Yes, I lived and died, and some of the stories are true, but most of it is a lie. I have been defeated. Sin and Satan won. Death was not destroyed. We are all heading into oblivion,” I would shrug my shoulders and say, “It matters not. I will follow what is written anyway, for there is no better way to live. And though the battle has been lost, at least maybe I can show some love and care to a few more people before we are all swept away.”

So what if Jesus did not rise from the dead? My answer is, “So what? I will follow Him anyway. Following the example of Jesus is by far the best way to live.”
